This Month, Bishop Stephen Writes: Dear FriendsIn July the General Synod approved the Measure to enable women to be consecrated as bishops in the Church of England.  At the same time the Synod approved some key principles to enable those who hold different views on these matters to live together within one Church and to work together in God’s mission.  The debate in July brings to an end a generation of debate on the ordination of women in the Church of England.  The outcome will be a cause of great joy and celebration to many.  To others it may bring some sadness.  However I hope and trust that we will be able to move forward together in respect and trust and to be able to give greater attention now to other areas of God’s mission. The provision for parishes unable to accept the ministry or leadership of ordained women is stronger than previous provision and intended to be for the long term.  It is based on five key principles, outlined in the House of Bishops declaration on the ministry of Bishops and Priests: • Now that legislation has been passed to enable women to become bishops the Church of England is fully and unequivocally committed to all orders of ministry being open equally to all, without reference to gender, and holds that those whom it has duly ordained and appointed to office are the true and lawful holders of the office which they occupy and thus deserve due respect and canonical obedience;

• Anyone who ministers within the Church of England must be prepared to acknowledge that the Church of England has reached a clear decision on the matter;

• Since it continues to share the historic episcopate with other Churches, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and those provinces of the Anglican Communion which continue to ordain only men as priests or bishops, the Church of England acknowledges that its own clear

decision on ministry and gender is set within a broader process of discernment within the Anglican Communion and the whole Church of God;

• Since those within the Church of England who, on grounds of theological conviction, are unable to receive the ministry of women bishops or priests continue to be within the spectrum of teaching and tradition of the Anglican Communion, the Church of England remains committed to enabling them to flourish within its life and structures; and

• Pastoral and sacramental provision for the minority within the Church of England will be made without specifying a limit of time and in a way that maintains the highest possible degree of communion and contributes to mutual flourishing across the whole Church of England. You can read the full text of the House of Bishops declaration on the Church of England website and the full text of my recent Presidential Address to the Diocesan Synod on these matters on the Diocesan website. We will be holding consultation meetings in the autumn for those who wish to take advantage of the new provision.  There is no need to be hasty in passing the new PCC Resolution: parishes which already have resolutions A, B and C in place have over two years to make the transition to the new arrangements.  I hope and pray that our conversation on these matters within the Diocese will now enter a new phase of building trust, deepening partnership in the gospel and care and respect for one another into the future.   In the words of Paul’s letter to the Colossians:“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience.  Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against one another, forgive each other; just as the LORD has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body.  And be thankful.”

September Monthly Magazine: A word from the Vicar

In the Sunday readings, and in my own personal study, I have been reminded that Church is really about the good news of Jesus Christ, and how that affects people and their relationships. Too often we get focused   on   the   buildings   and   jobs   and   forget   we   are   here   as   a community  of  people  exploring  how to   live  out  our   faith  here   in Goole in 2014. Jesus, as the living Son of God, came to set us free, and give us life in all its fullness. This then is about our real lives – what is going on in our hearts and minds, and how this affects our spirits. If we are honest, what concerns us most is ourselves, and our relationships.  So   let’s   focus  on   the   truly   important  good news  of Jesus, and work out what it means for us for the 166+ hours of the week we are not in the Church Building in the just over an hour we are.

Let’s   remember   too,   that   our   buildings   are   here   to   serve   our community   of   faith,   and   through   us,   to   serve   the   community   of Goole   in   which   we   live.   Whilst   they   are   important,   they   remain secondary to our purpose. (For hundreds of years, and still in many countries,   Christian   Communities   have   met,   worshipped   and transform societies all without their own buildings.) The upkeep of buildings   require  more   volunteers   than   we   have   at   present,   and therefore not everything will be as we might like. When we criticise then, we must be careful not to criticise the wrong person. And we must be willing to accept it might have to be our own responsibility to respond to the need.

Report of PCC Half-Day: August 30th

1) What is the Church for … what is the Church for in Goole ?This was an opportunity to reflect on what we do – and was an opportunity to begin to develop a “Mission Statement” which could be used to examine what we do.

It was noted that in our discussion:Church is more about people and relationships than buildings – the

building(s) are simply there to enable a community to be meet and grow. We need to remember this when it comes to issues of jobs and buildings.

2) What are our priorities for the near future?This question allowed us to look at how we can build the Church (people and relationships), and how we use the Church Buildings.

Discussion raised a number of potential initiatives that we will hopefully introduce over the coming months. To start with, we would like to introduce in September

Advertising our programme of services through the Goole Times, and local shops

Have a new monthly open morning for people to come into Church to pray:

This would be the third Saturday of the Month, between 09:00am and 11:00am and would have a specific prayer station for all major world/local elements as well as being available for general prayer and reflection. It would be manned by a small team of people.

Volunteers from PCC are Val, Shaun, Helen, Sue, Dan, Ken, and would be open to the Church Congregations

The PCC also believe that we need a Church Hall suitable for the next twenty to thirty years. We intend to investigate the possibility of a purpose built Hall, in the Church Grounds, given the limitations of “The Spire” for re-development. Please submit any Comments to the Vicar.

3) How do we do things in St John’s in an effective and efficient way?This was a time when we could look at how we already do things in St John’s and how we could make things more efficient and effective, given the number of people who have volunteered to do jobs.

We have limited volunteers to do all the work in Church. In times past, some people have taken sole responsibility for a job/role and when they no longer do it, the job has fallen into disrepair.

We do not always have clearly defined roles and responsibilities. People expect some roles to cover far more than is actually required by the role.

Page 9: €¦ · Web viewIn July the General Synod approved the Measure to enable women to be consecrated as bishops in the Church of England. At the same time the Synod approved some key

So we need to use our volunteers wisely. We need to clarify our roles and responsibilities. And we need to develop teams to cover jobs, so no one is expected to do it all.

Consequently the following has been agreed by the PCC:

Whilst two people will hold the legal position of Churchwarden, the Churchwardens, and Deputy-Churchwarden will form a team to cover the work. They will also select and train others to support them in specific areas e.g. A Setting Up Team for Sunday Services.

The Fabric Sub-committee will be responsible for the upkeep of the Church Buildings on behalf of the Churchwardens. One of their first tasks will be to create a list of tradespeople who can be contacted to resolve problems quickly.

A new Chalice Team will be identified and trained. (Roger, Ken, and Judy are presently on the team, Emily volunteered to join it.)

To enable the Church to be “Fair-Trade”, there will be a centralisation of teas and coffees for all Church Groups. From the 1st of October there will be one central supply of Tea, Coffee, Sugar and Biscuits for the Sunday and Thursday post-service refreshments, and Companions. All that will be needed is milk on the Day. Emily will act as stock-manager. Makro will be the primary resource for stock. Mother’s Union as a separate identity will be expected to supply their own, unless they specifically buy-into the Church System.

As there is no team to maintain flowers in the Church, a number of permanent displays of artificial flowers will be purchased to decorate the Church. At major festivals the PCC will ask for volunteers to decorate the Church with fresh flowers. Memorial flowers to be arranged by those requesting them

The Spire subcommittee will cease, as its functions would best be served through the appropriate subcommittees.

Individual roles and responsibilities need to be clearly defined

Noticeboard of appropriate contact points to be created – including photos of the PCC

Please bear with us as we try to complete these as soon as we are able.

Remember, we need more volunteers to be able to do more. If you would like to take something on we would be delighted to hear from you.

St John’s Parish Churchand

Easy Fundraising

We have registered St John’s Church with Easy Fundraising, which is an Internet site that allows our Church to benefit from your on-line shopping. St John’s is a charity so it can benefit in this way.

By using the Easy Fundraising site to access your normal on-line retailers a portion of the money that you spend with them, typically 5%, is ‘donated’ to St John’s Church.

Is it easy to use?

The answer is Yes. Go to the Easy Fundraising website (www.easyfundraising.org.uk) and create an account for yourself, it is really easy to do this. When you have done that you will need to link your account with the church. This is done by searching for “St Johns Parish Church Goole”. There is some information about our church so you will know that you have selected the right one.

After this, each time you want to buy something on-line just go to Easy Fundraising first and then go to the website you normally shop with using the link provided.

What stores are available?A veritable Who’s Who. Tesco, Amazon, M&S, Boots, Argos, PC World, ASDA, – the list goes on.

We do hope you will give it a try and help provide funds for St John’s that would otherwise not come our way.

Many thanks from Rob and the PCC Amount Raised so far £ 224.86 Don't forget to use Easy Fundraising when starting your Christmas Shopping on Line.
