ACTIVITY REPORT Oct - Dec 2015 Introduction This report sets out activity beginning the final year of the Project - Year 3 and its associated theme ‘History of Tourism’. The report follows the same format as within the Action Plan submitted in the original bid for funding. There are additional elements at the end of the table which pick up uncompleted activity from previous years or where activities are naturally continuing from year to year. Please refer to the Project spreadsheets which document the figures used within the table below. The table sets out an ongoing tally of outputs for the entire Project (column 4), quantifying activity since August 2013 (the Project start). Targets for Year 3 appear in column 2, and then the overall tally of activity for Year 3 appears in column 3. For a full written description of activity for each previous quarter of the Project please refer to the details set out in previous reports. A vast array of the interpretative outputs from the Project are publicly available within the National Park Centre in Lynmouth as well as other locations around Exmoor, not to mention the feast of film, photos and material accessible on YouTube, Flickr, the Project webpage and Exmoor National Park website as well as via the App. The Project Facebook page is very active and all events and activities are regularly tweeted, with weekly posts #WoodlandWednesday #FlashbackFriday tying in with our current interpretative themes. 1 3 The October half term film week Youth Challenge was a fantastic success. Working with Somerset Film, 13 Young People stayed at the National Trust Bunkhouse near Lynton and were set the challenge of restoring a section of coastal heathland overtaken by woodland. Not only that, they filmed themselves in the process! The Pavilion Project leant several cameras to the team and paid for a day’s tuition with lead film-maker from Somerset Film and a morning presentation by a wildlife film cameraman. Somerset Film accompanied the Young People throughout the week and led them through an afternoon of film editing. They were shown a rough cut of their film on the final day and 4 lovely pieces of film were edited by Somerset Film after the week-long workshop and are available on YouTube. An exhibition of the challenge will be displayed via selected stills within National Park Centre Lynmouth in the Spring.

o During the October half term, the Project Team ran a special ‘dress the holidaymakers’ heritage activity event at the Big Adventure Day at Webbers Post. Children could choose an outfit from different periods of tourism to Exmoor and colour it in, adding it to their cut-out Adam or Eve figurine who were enjoying the Exmoor bluebell woods. About 250 people engaged with this activity. We also used the event to launch our ‘Holidays Past’ project, and several visitors wrote their memories of holidays to Exmoor in our special book.

o Your Exmoor – Living Woodlands: celebrating all that lives in Exmoor’s woodlands we turned the National Park Centre into a virtual woodland, hiding all sorts of Exmoor’s creatures around the Centre for families to find using several quizzes, imagining they were spotting wildlife within a wood. 30 families enjoyed these activities.

o Watercolour Workshop – run by Exmoor Arts, 7 people joined in with this event, lerning how to turn their favourite Exmoor landscape into a professional-looking watercolour worthy of framing.

o As part of the Christmas Fair held within the Pavilion, the Project ran a heritage Christmas Card Competition, based around heritage scenes of winters past. Fifteen lovely entries were made and submitted during the day and people learned a little about the winters on Exmoor and the Project’s archive of photos.

o In-keeping with our new series of events ‘Touching on Tradition’, the Project ran a

The Project commissioned a Heritage Workshop Facilitator to develop 10 bespoke, self-contained new workshops which volunteers were trained to deliver into the future. Eighteen volunteers attended the training session and the activities are now available on a loan-box scheme to all visitor centres across Exmoor. To store the kits, the Project has invested in some permanent shelving now in situ in the Project Office.

Umber Music continued to hold their Moor Music sessions, celebrating the music and song of Exmoor. They branched out to incorporate other venues through 2015 and encouraged publicans to contribute towards their performance fee in a few cases. During this quarter they ran sessions at the Village Inn (Lynmouth), White Horse (Exford), Bottom Ship (Porlock). They received the following feedback from their sessions:

“Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed the Moor Music session last night. It was a lovely atmosphere and some great songs which were new to us.” Lisa Eden, Allerford

“The best folk night we’ve had for a very long time.” Unknown attendee, Minehead

"It was lovely to hear proper folk music sung live in the village that I grew up in. When a local chap asked if anyone knew the Exmoor Hunt song, it was very impressive that Tom could sing it straight from memory." Alec Hay, Creech St. Michael, Taunton

“I don’t want to say this out loud, I really don’t want to share this with any ‘moor people’. Something as special as this needs to be protected, nourished and cherished, not shared or promoted as a wonderful inclusive evening of music, singing, story telling, poetry and good ale. Have you ever sat in the Poltimore Arms and watched a gathering of individuals combine their shared commitment and exceptional range of talent to conjure out of their understanding of tradition and wild environment an atmosphere so special and intense that the history and future of the ‘moor’ lives within that space…? I have! Why would I want to share that? Simply because everyone should at least have the opportunity.” Review: David Woodbury, West Challacombe

Glorious Glass stained glass workshops continue to be popular, with 10 people coming to two events this quarter

Village shows, run by Umber Music, ran throughout this quarter as well, taking local traditional song and music out into the local community around Exmoor. They delivered a show at Winsford – An Exmoor Garland (October 17th: attendance 26).

Somerset Film ran the week long Film Challenge with the National Trust Young People, already reported on above.

No school activity took place this quarter. It was hoped that the Top Trunks would be ready to produce but sadly the lead teacher on this project has been signed off long term sick and no other individual at the school is able to complete this work in his absence.

Combe Martin Sea School produced some lovely work – a guide to the Exmoor shore, by children, for children. This is now with the designer for production during the next quarter, aiming for a small booklet available along the whole coast with an initial print run of 1500.

During this quarter Project staff met with the Exmoor Centre to discuss Year 3 support for their Summer educational Programme. We have asked them to develop 4 sessions under the banner ‘taster sessions for new audiences’ and so this will not be covered under the school programme for year 3.

Exmoor’s oldest tree, The General, is being filmed through the year, showing ‘A Year in the Life of the General’, including drone footage and a crane to reach the uppermost branches. This film will then be taken around to 4 local schools by the film maker to engage the children in the filming process as well as the heritage of the tree.

Porlock Community Orchard expressed interest in the orchard being documented through the year and the film of that is now near completion. It includes film of the beehives and interviews with key characters related to the orchard’s development. Most recently their wassail was filmed to be included.

During the woodland adventure days we interviewed members of the public to ask them what they love most about Exmoor’s woodlands. This piece has been finalised and is to be released shortly online.

We continue to work with the Culbone community to develop a film about the ancient Culbone stone and church. A filming programme has been developed for completion during the next quarter.

Each stag will contain a riddle developed by local school children. Chris aims to attract additional funding to support this ambitious project:

The proposal is to create a series of grass labyrinths across Exmoor with support from The Lynmouth Pavilion Project and engage with each host community. Each labyrinth will be in the shape of a stag and the trail through the grass path will pass nodes where slate slabs are laid into the ground - level with the trail. Eight of the slates will have a single riddle etched

July 2014 on each created by the host community and based around nature and Exmoor features.

The centre of the labyrinth will have a single slate on the stag’s eye which has the answers to the riddles as well as National Park logo. The first slate will give instruction as to the project, those involved and again logo’s as required by the funders.

The grass path is proposed to be trimmed regularly by Mr Jelley across the summer to become established after which it is proposed that if the community are happy, then the strimming maintenance would be taken on by the community. There are 10 slates proposed (8 riddles, one start point and one finish) to be installed which would be permanent, though they would be laid flush to allow a mower to pass across without incident. If the labyrinth were left unmaintained then the labyrinth would simply grow out, though the slate riddles would still remain. Note - In the future the process of cutting ready for a village event would be quite simple and the shape of the path could then be changed as the operator desires.

Summary

A great launch into Year 3: History of Tourism with the following highlights for Project staff:

Surprising degree of interest from the public, visitors and local businesses about our memory recording project ‘Holidays Past’! A very solid Facebook and Twitter campaign to generate interest in our heritage images. We’re delighted to have connected a family now living in

Australia to their ancestral heritage here on Exmoor! Excitement at being joined by Heritage Placements (we hope) in response to our vigorous online hunt for interested volunteers A wonderful new information leaflet summarising Exmoor’s shorelife Increased support from volunteers and ENPA staff in taking up the baton of arranging competitions and events within the Pavilion with a view to

handing-over at the close of the Project
