Sick ListOur second claimers have been in the wars, Jon Parker unfortunately had a skiing accident and has broken several bones and Jo Malpass crashed the other day and has badly broken her wrist requiring 2 operations. After a long convalescence Peter Huckstep is making gradual progress.We wish them all the best for a complete recovery.

NewsThanet RC was well represented by our three National Youth Forum representatives at the South East Go-Ride conference in Tunbridge Wells yesterday. Well done to David Redmond, Megan Griffiths and Dan Martin for all their hard work.Ollie Robinson has been riding in Belgium for the South East Junior Team producing some excellent results. The weekend 4th/5th March produced a 9th place and a 2nd place and a great ride in the extremely tough 130Km Junior Ghent-Wevelgem for 31st out of 160 riders, Well done, keep it up!

Sunday 26 th February North Road CC Hardriders 25 F7/25 (Brookmans Park) Seb Dickson 53.15, winner was Lloyd Chapman (Banks Catford Equipe) 51.15. Great ride for 6 th place by Seb in this renowned tough event.Sunday 5 th March KCA 3-up 25 Q25/12 (Hamstreet Bypass) Paul and Mike Kirkness/Scott Meeks 1.04.39, Simon Henderson/Rick Perkins/Huck Garip 57.37, Martin Russell/Paul Kelk/Dave Mastin 1.11.23.Chris Fennell was DNS so Nic and Seb Dickson rode as a 2-up in 58.12, this was a non counter.Well done to all who rode on an appalling day with pouring rain and high winds for the later starters, the last six teams did not start.The event was won by Rhys Clegg/Harry Godding/Neil Lauder (PMR) 55.07.Well done to Simon, Rick and Huck for a very creditable 2nd place.

Sunday 19 th March VTTA 30 Q30/2 (Hamstreet Bypass) Robert Sissons 1.24.19, Colin Inett 1.33.11, Huck Garip 1.10.05, Chris Bax 1.17.32, Dave Mastin 1.24.42, Nic Fennell 1.08.49, Mike Kirkness 1.11.40, Paul Kirkness 1.22.00, Adrian Hawkins 1.12.55, Rick Perkins 1.11.57, Simon Henderson 1.08.52(PB). Winner was Nick Wilson (Rye and Dist Wheelers) 1.07.00. Well done to Nic (2nd fastest and fastest non-vet) and Simon on his PB on what was not an easy day.

YDS riders work hard in the Full Gas March   Hare Three of our YDS riders travelled to Lee Valley Velo Park yesterday (19th) for the Full Gas March Hare road circuit races.Lance was first up, lone Thanet RC rider in the March Hare U14 race. A little apprehensive pre-race as this was his first race back after a nasty viral infection and chest infection stopped him being able to ride at all for 2 weeks. Lance warmed up and felt pretty good, just happy to be able to ride without coughing. The conditions were challenging with a strong wind blowing around the outdoor circuit.The race started and Lance was riding well in the front group, a crash early on caused a split in the field with 3 strong riders (Innes (VCL), Rahul & Freddie (PPYCC)) pushing on after the crash and getting a gap on the front group leaving Lance leading the chasing group with him, Kaine (Wyndymilla) & Billy (VCL) doing the majority of the work to close the gap on the riders up the road. This resulted in Lance having little left in the tank for the final sprint, finishing 9th overall. Lance was pleased to get through the race and get a top 10 and his first BC points of the season despite his race preparation being hampered by illness.He is looking forward to a big weekend next weekend with the 3rd and Final Icebreaker race in Newport, Wales on Saturday 25th March and the LVYCC National Youth circuit race at Redbridge on Sunday 26th March.Next up were George Pittock & Josh Chivilo in the U16 race and conditions were tough with the wind still blowing strongly, both riders worked hard and despite 3 riders also leaving the bunch behind in their race, the Thanet YDS riders finished the final sprint in the mid of the bunch with Joshua Chivilo finishing 21st and George Pittock 22nd overall. George is also heading to the LVYCC National Youth circuit race next week, (Joshua is waiting to see if as a reserve he will get a space in the fully subscribed U16) Jack Hill is also going to be riding the national next week in the U14 raceSaturday 25 th March VTTA 10 Q10/22 (Harrietsham) Paul Kelk DNS, Mike Kirkness 22.58, Chris Bax 25.03, Paul Kirkness 26.18, Colin Inett 29.04, Scott Meeks 23.06, Nic Fennell 21.58, Dave Mastin 26.42, Bill Hawkes 22.04, Martin Russell 25.04, Huck Garip 22.58, Simon Henderson 22.17. Winner was Tom Rowing (Abellio SFA) 21.25. It was a successful event for club riders, with 5 Thanet riders in the top 10. Nic Fennell was 2nd overall, while Simon Henderson was 5th overall and second in the veterans category on age standard. Bill Hawkes was 1st Veteran on Scratch and 3rd overall, while Huck Garip and Mike Kirkness were 7th and 10th overall respectively. A tricky day with a strong crosswind.Lance performs well at the 3rd and final Newport   Icebreaker Lance travelled to Newport, Wales for the final Icebreaker, as the starter for a pretty full on weekend of cycling. First up was the scratch race where Lance finished 8th in his heat, qualifying for the final, in the scratch final he rode well to finish 15thoverall. In the points race that followed Lance pushed hard at the penultimate and final sprinter coming 4th in both to gain points making him 8th in his heat and again qualifying for the points final. The next event was the elimination which was a very tactical race in which Lance fought hard in and again Lance placed 8th in his heat (although the elimination race doesn’t have a final). The points final was the last event of the afternoon and by this time Lance was a little tired and also aware that he was racing the LVYCC Youth National at Redbridge tomorrow so when 4 riders gained half a lap on the field and hoovered up the points in the last few sprints he made the decision not to use too much energy to chase on.Lance has learnt a great deal from travelling to the Icebreaker races and pushing himself to the next level in his track riding, including inspiring him to train harder.Thanet riders at youth national series-Redbridge Sunday 26th   March. Under 14 race.Lance Childs came 45th out of 93 despite having competed in the Icebreaker race in Newport the day before and being disadvantaged by a restart in his race after it was red flagged and also being pulled out in error as he had not yet been lapped by the leading pack but he hung in the main pack for about 35 minutes before the elastic snapped but he still rode for 56 minutes before he was pulled out just before the leading pack had 3 laps to go. Jack Hill also raced and found the competition a high standard but gained valuable experience going forwardUnder 16 raceGeorge Pittock was the only South East rider outside of the big London clubs to be selected in a field of 102 at the U16Boys National Youth Circuit Series Round 1 at Redbridge on Sunday.

Random gridding placed George right of the back of the field at the start but he started well and settled in towards the back of the main bunch. However, he found himself losing ground each lap on the famous Hog Hill descent, having to chase back on the flatter sections of the course before tackling the 10% Hoggenberg.A solo attack by Thomas Gloag of VC Londres was initially allowed to go before a small chasing pack led by Lewis Askey of Derbyshire based RST Racing Team closed him down.Askey swept straight through and quickly established a lead, eventually winning the race by 59 seconds ahead of two Yorkshire riders, Dylan Westley of Pedal Sport Cycling Club and Samuel Watson of Chevin Cycles Trek. Askey is a member of the British Cycling Olympic Development Academy and eight times national champion on the road, track, cyclo-cross and mountain bike!George was lapped and pulled out of the race according to British Cycling regulations, but finished 83rd and among other riders of similar ability who he regularly competes against on the road and on the track.“The speed on the descent was scary, especially in such a big bunch. I had to use energy chasing back each time and that cost me some places. But it was a good learning experience and I am not too disappointed. I did better in my first nationals at U16 than I did at U14”.George now has a busy schedule of regional races almost every weekend until the end of May when he hopes to be selected for the Screentek International North West Youth and Junior Tour in Lancashire.SERRL 3 rd Cat Road Race Cranbrook 26 th March Well done Toby Perry for fine 9th place today. Also great ride from Alex Ashman for helping pulling break back in and competing well in the race. Both riders were having their first outing in TRC race team kit.

AudaxThere seems to be a growing interest within the Club in Audax riding.Audax is a cycling sport in which participants attempt to cycle long distances within a pre-defined time limit. Audax is a non-competitive sport: success in an event is measured by its completion. Full details of what Audax is about can be found on the Audax UK website www.aukweb.net Martin Hendy is a keen participant in Audax events, here is an account of one of his recent rides:-

Myself, Scott Meeks and Richard Chew , headed down to Hailsham for a 125Km Audax on Sat Feb 25th.Richard was keen and had set off early from Sandwich on his trusty Dawes Galaxy over to meet me in Herne Bay before we headed over to Scotts for the drive down to HailshamThe event was named Mad Jacks after a rather controversial 18TH Century local Squire John Mad Jack Fuller of Brightling 1757 -1834 that had a love for creating large concrete structures around the area known as follies, you may have noticed the very large pyramid one in the church yard, or the huge conical one out in the middle of a field if you have driven or

rode that way.It was a triple AAA Climbing Event with plenty of hills thrown in with 3 different loops out of Battle returning back to the check point in Battle on completion of each loop.On the final loop we stopped at Fairlight Tearooms for a well earned ham egg and chips, very good it was too, before heading back to the finish in Hailsham.................................all part of the fun that make it Mad Jacks..........ONWARDS AND MOST CERTAINLY UPWARDS

Have you ever thought as you cycle through the many picturesque villages of Kent what objects of interest may be found in them? Here Martin gives us an insight……Just to the right of us as we cycle our Tuesday and Thursday  social club route through the picturesque village of Wickhambreaux is the church of St Andrews.Buried in the graveyard is SQN/LDR David J.H Maltby DSO DFCHe was part of the daring operation on May 16th-17th, 1943, in which a crack squadron, armed with the innovative bouncing bombs of Barnes Wallis, was sent on a mission to destroy German damsMaltby was only 23 years old, Months earlier he had wed at St Andrew's Church in Wickhambreaux, where his body now lies.When he was dropping dummy bouncing bombs at Reculver, he would fly his Lancaster low over the home of his wife Nina and her farming family.On the night of the raid flying at low level all the way, the squadron got to the dam and waited for its chance to bomb.Eight out of 17 Avro Lancasters dispatched were shot down, killing 53 crewmen.After 4 bombing runs and with the Mohne dam showing signs of cracking It was then that Flight Lieutenant Maltby delivered the killer blow. His bomb smashed into the dam, sending a jet of mud and water skywards.The following Tuesday Maltby was promoted to Squadron Leader and awarded the Distinguished Service Order.Maltby's death over the North Sea on September 14, 1943 is shrouded in mystery.Squadron Leader Maltby became a Flight Commander in 617 Squadron following the massive casualties over the dams.The unit had been ordered to attack the Dortmund-Ems canal when bad weather intervened over the North Sea.As the pilot obeyed an order to return to base, the Lancaster crashed into the water, taking the seven-man crew with it.It is believed the Lancaster collided with a Mosquito light bomber. Only Maltby's body was recovered.He had been knocked unconscious and drowned.So if you are passing on your bike this summer pop in and pay your respects to just one of many brave R.A.F airman that gave their lives.

The Jim Braginton Memorial Shield (an Easter Monday 2-up) and The Jim Braginton Memorial Cup (most open time trials completed in the season.) Cup 2016 Winner: Simon Henderson. Shield not awarded in 2016.

Jim (10.06.36 - 22.01.91) and was a marine claims assessor and active rider and club committee member. He came to Thanet from CC Bexley in the late sixties and took on the role of Secretary/Treasurer in 1969, reviving the club from its sixties’ low ebb when it amalgamated with Canterbury due to the low membership, down to fourteen when Jim took the helm. When he resigned in 1982 membership had increased to 88 and funds by over twentyfold. By then he had held nearly every role in the club; General Secretary, Treasurer, Press and Social Secretary as well as Coach. He was renowned for his meticulous organisation of open time trials, sea front criteriums (72-79 Westbrook Seafront and 81 in Ramsgate) and winter training classes.

Dave Cooper, sports editor of The Times wrote “There was never a dull moment when Jim was around. He lived his life to the full and undoubtedly believed he had years left of his prime when the fates decided otherwise. He will be sadly missed but long remembered.” Photo shows Jim officiating at The Prospect Inn.
