Number 10

Look at the picture. How many sets of 10 can you make?Story of 10: Get 10 small items that can be found around the house e.g. teaspoons, lego pieces, clothes pegs, socks, jigsaw pieces etc.Draw a big circle with a line through the middle on a piece of paper (or use template below) Placing all the items inside the circle, create the story of 10.Record your story by writing number sentences. e.g. 10 + 0 = 10(if you have a whiteboard or chalk board you can record it there)Try to find all the ways of making 10Revisit the picture again: Look carefully at the picture, what can you tell me about it?• Which number do you think this picture is telling us about?• Where can you see ten in this picture?• How is the number ten shown in different ways?Discussion Monday-

Look at the moons, Can you see the moons orbiting around the big planet? What can you tell me about the different moons? How many moons are there of each colour? How many are there altogether?Draw the children’s attention to the number bond made by the moons – there are six grey moons and four white ones. How can they show this on their fingers? You may like to use this opportunity to discuss how the moons can be counted carefully or how we can subitise. If one of the moons orbited behind the planet, would there still be ten moons? You could take this opportunity to talk about how the number of moons stays the same even if the arrangement changes.Visit

Tuesday:

Look at the Meteorites What do you notice about the meteorites? Can you count them?I wonder what would happen if one of the meteorites crashed into a planet. How manywould be left?Ask the children what they notice about the way the meteorites are arranged.Encourage the children to explain how they know that there are ten meteorites &encourage them to check by counting them. You may like to represent the meteorites in a ten-frame or a number ten number shape.

Wednesday

Look at the AlienEncourage the children to tell you about the alien’s arms and legs, comparing the number of each as well as talking about the total number. How many arms and legs does the alien have? What can you tell me about his arms and legs? How many arms does he have? Does he have more arms than legs? How do you know? Can you say a number sentence about the alien’s arms and legs? The alien has ten of something else. Can you spot what it is?

ThursdayLook at the StarsCan you see the bright stars in the sky? What can you tell me about the different stars? How many stars are there altogether? How many shooting stars? How manyordinary stars?Draw the children’s attention to the number bond made by the stars – there are nine‘normal’ stars and one shooting star. How can they show this on their fingers? Is it easier to count the stars or the meteorites? Why?

You may like to use this opportunity to discuss how the stars can be counted carefullyor how we can subitise.

Friday

Look at the PlanetHow many craters are on the planet? How many craters have an alien in them? How many are empty? How many more aliens are needed so that there is an alien in each crater? Can you say a number sentence about the craters? If all the aliens flew away in their spaceship, would there still be ten craters? How do you know?
