Year 1 Weekly Tasks for Writing Monday You will need: Video to explain today’s task. Images from the book. Handwriting Starter: Watch the video of Miss Fernandes and practise writing some letters, you can do this on any lined paper (if you do not have lined paper, you can draw some lines in pencil onto plain paper.) Main: Watch the video to explain today’s task. Today we are responding to illustrations (pictures in the book) by comparing two images from the book. The children will need to think about what is similar about these two characters and then what is different. Every child should be able to say these out loud. Most children should be able to write words or short phrases around the images or on a separate bit of paper to say what is the same/different, for example: Differences: man and woman, wearing blue and wearing red, old and younger, holding Beegu close and holding Beegu away Similarities: adults, tall, unkind, taking Beegu away Tuesday You will need: Video to explain today’s task. Time to talk. Starter: Watch Miss Fernandes read the rest of the story Main: Think about, what are ‘Earth’s Rules’? Discuss what we do every day. An alien like Beegu would not know that we need to breathe in the air to survive! She might also not know that we sleep in beds and not in trees! What other ‘Earth Rules’ can you think of? Focus on oral rehearsal (saying these rules out loud) today we want to practise the skill of orally rehearsing

TuesdayYou will need:

Video to explain today’s task.Time to talk.

Starter: Watch Miss Fernandes read the rest of the story

Main: Think about, what are ‘Earth’s Rules’?Discuss what we do every day. An alien like Beegu would not know that we need to breathe in the air to survive! She might also not know that we sleep in beds and not in trees! What other ‘Earth Rules’ can you think of?Focus on oral rehearsal (saying these rules out loud) today we want to practise the skill of orally rehearsing our sentences.

Adults, this is just a basic idea of explaining Earth to an alien – we do not need to worry too much about laws or other rules like road safety. Use the examples given in the video and on this plan to help you.

Examples:We eat food, we are kind to one another, we drink water, we breathe air, we live amongst many other animals, we live in homes, we sleep in beds.

WednesdayYou will need:

Colouring pens or pencils, or paint, or chalk and paper to

draw on.

Think back to the ‘Earth Rules’ that you came up with yesterday.Today you are going to choose 2 or 3 of these rules and create some signs for Beegu!Use lots of colours and pictures to help Beegu to understand your signs.

Look at the example below to give you an idea of what to draw on your sign!

Adults, this is an exploratory activity used to generate ideas for next week’s big write. Encourage your child to draw and colour in and enjoy this fun task! We do not need any writing or words. Today we are building up our ideas. Talk through their signs with them to encourage different vocabulary and lots of ideas.

Additional work

You will need:Pen and paper.

Noun hunt sheet (or you can draw your

own.)

Go on a noun hunt!

Most nouns fit into 3 categories, a person, a place or a thing.Such as, Miss Fernandes (a person), Croydon (a place) and a pencil (a thing.)

Using a table made yourself or the template on the website with these three headings see if your child can find different objects/things in and around your home and sort them into these categories. Your child can either draw the item or write the word.

Examples:Themselves, you, a sibling, a person on the TVYour house, Croydon, the kitchen, the park, their bedroomA pencil, dinner, a bowl, a water bottle

Additional work

You will need:Pens and paper to

Adults, read out loud any of these words, do not point at them though! Your challenge, is to sight read these words and SPLAT the word with a spatula or similar item (could use hands) as quickly as possible.Time yourself; can you beat your previous time?

Challenge: Once your child is able to read these words by sight (not using sounds) quickly, challenge them to do the same with the next set of words, the violet and indigo rainbow words: day, are, my, this, for, went, see, come, yes, look

If your child is finding this task challenging, you can use the red and pink words first: I, it, is, in, a, am, at, and, on, upOr last week’s words.
