An email from the late Alan Kaye to an editor at Lincom Europa, Munich, Germany, 2007.

Dear Ulrich,This communication demonstrates my high regard for Dr. Bahaa Mazid's MS. on Arabic and general translation and my esteem for his outstanding erudition in linguistics, translation studies, and Arabic and English.  I have read it making some observations in the margins, and I will be writing the Foreword to it very soon.  The author has more material to add which will be very useful to the field.  Dr. Mazid is one of the few linguists anywhere with such an amazing range of talent in both Arabic and English linguistics, including stylistics and language variation.  He has my highest praise and recommendation as a scholar, colleague in the same college at the same university, and author.

Sincerely,Alan S. KayeChair, Dept. of General LinguisticsUnited Arab Emirates UniversityP. O. Box 17771Al Ain, UAE

To Whom It May ConcernI have known Professor Mazid since 1995 when I was on the board of examiners for his

M.A. thesis entitled Complimenting Behavior among Upper Egyptian University Learners of English. I have been following the development of his career since then, and he has indeed lived up to the expectations of his teachers and colleagues, attaining his professorship in Applied Linguistics and Stylistics at the incredibly early age of 43. His perseverance in following up courses and studies in multiple areas of Applied Linguistics, Stylistics and Translation marks an inquisitive mentality that always hunts for further knowledge. Professor Mazid is an excellent example of proficiency and professionalism.

His approach to his work is unconventional; he is a voracious reader and he is always ready to try out new methods via creative activity and applied tasks rather than theorizing. The volume of his research and writings is impressive, and its value is commendable. The variety of interests—as evident from the courses he has taught and the research he has done--ranges from the stylistic analysis of fiction and poetry, to aspects of language teaching, semiotics, syntactic analysis, critical discourse and discourse analysis, semantics, Arabic rhetoric, varied translation studies, pragmatics, TEFL, and sociolinguistics. His command of research on both Arabic and English renders his work more precious and more applicable.

Professor Mazid has also been very prolific with general topics that appeared in specialized and public newspapers as well as with participation to symposia, workshops and conferences in many parts of the world.

As a person, Professor Mazid has an impressive personality, with evident social skills characterized by marked deference and a keenness on self-respect that has been valued by everyone who knows him. He has an exceptional ability for handling students and winning their respect through his successful and creative teaching methods, being well versed in the methodology of teaching English. His marked achievement and his qualifications have not affected his natural modesty and his tendency to keep a low profile. Professor Mazid is indeed an exceptional person. I am quite confident that he will be an asset to your respected university if he is given a chance to teach there.

Salwa Abdel-Aziz Kamel Professor of Linguistics

Department of English Language and Literature Faculty of arts, Cairo University
