Set ( 10 min):This set will introduce Remembrance Day to the students. There will be a PowerPoint show that will have minimal, but enough detailed information about the events that passed and the symbols associated with Remembrance Day. It will have many photos and visuals to help aid in the attention retention of the students. I will present the info, and after a few slides there will be questions to make sure the students are following along. This PowerPoint will help introduce the activities to follow.

Development (35 min):The working activities for this lesson will be a combination of witting and creating visuals, such as a Remembrance Day quilt. The writing aspect will be two worksheets. The first one will be a worksheet about heroes. The students will be asked to construct a visual aid on the outline provided. This is a way for them to identify heroes in their everyday lives and to pick one they want to give special attention to. Underneath the drawing is an area where students will write a few sentences that will describe a hero they know. Beside the hero drawing is a word box with heroic adjectives. This will be used as prompt starters to create the sentences. The second worksheet is a short paragraph with fill in the blanks. It is basic information around Remembrance day. There again is a word box on the worksheet that has all the words they will need. This is prepared in the same format of some of their guided reading ‘word work’. The third activity will be the Remembrance Day quilt. This activity will be last in case time runs out. The idea behind each quilt square is to remember and honor the brave men and women who fought and died for our freedoms. Each student will decorate the square with a meaningful image about what Remembrance Day means to them. When they are all completed, they will put them together and make a class Remembrance Day Quilt. I will thoroughly explain the worksheets at the start to avoid any confusion they might have from reading directions.

Closure ( 5 min) :The closure will consist of student finishing up the

Student Engagement/Classroom Managements Strategies:

Using normal and natural voice- keeping the tone of the class fun and calm without causing tension by raising our voices.

I will tell the students that this lesson will follow the same rules as guided reading and it is meant to be a quite, yet productive independent learning.

Using hand signals and other non-verbal methods of communication with the students- holding one hand in the air, asking them to “Give me 5” and making eye contact with students to quiet the class and get their attention for directions.

If children are being disruptive and not following directions, I will use the same give me five technique and specifically call out their names.

Some noise is allowed during this art activity- however with the use of gentle reminders, the students will keep the excitement and noise to an appropriate classroom level.
