The main characteristics of post impressionist’s artwork were vibrant colours, the paint on the canvas is thick, exaggerated shapes, real life subjects.

Some of the themes that the Post Impressionists painted were urban life, landscapes and exotic landscapes along with religious motifs and self-portraits.

In 1854 japan re opened trade routes with the west, this had an impact on art and artists working at the time because in japan they wouldn’t have really seen people from the west and they were much different to how the people in japan looked. For example westerners had more facial hair such as beards etc. so artists in japan had taken note of this and used it in their artwork as this was much different to them. Japanese art works would include fans, porcelains,bronzes,woodcuts and screens were shipped to Europe but mainly France and the Netherlands.

The Japanese had also done art of the ships the Dutch came on.

Each over the ships had taken different directions to get to japan from France and other countries.to get to japan it would take them around 6-7 months to reach the country.
