Reflection Sunday 10th May

“Noli timere”

The Nobel prize winner, Seamus Heaney, who died in August 2013, has been described as one of the greatest poets ever. Many of his poems came from his own deep sense of faith and a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. In his final

illness he wished to console his wife in relation to his imminent death. “Noli timere” he said to her, “do not be afraid”, an echo of the words of Jesus today “Do

not let your hearts be troubled”.

Thomas in the Gospel today wants straight-forward and clear-out answers on how to come to God, on how to get to know Him and have a relationship with Him. Jesus wants to take us beyond rules and regulations and to develop a deeper

relationship with the Father through going the extra mile, being generous in prayer and good works, and having faith in Him, even when our hearts are troubled. In these frightening and uncertain times, when the fear of the unknown, when the

cruelty of someone whom we love may be ill or dying alone, we need to take Jesus at his word, “do not let your hearts be troubled”.

“Noli timere”, do not be afraid.
