In today’s Gospel Jesus promises us that “I will not leave you orphaned; I will come back to you and you will have life.” Our faith, nurtured in this great paschal season, tells us that God-made-flesh is God-with-us, never abandoning us and always filling us with life.

It should be a great comfort to all of us, who share in the pain and suffering of ordinary life, to know that the Spirit of Jesus is with us always. It should be especially comforting to know that Jesus will not leave orphaned all those whom the world casts aside: the poor and homeless, the racial and ethnic minorities, the sick and dying, the prisoner and the refugee.

“Thus says the Lord: I will pour out my spirit upon all mankind. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall see visions.”

The coming of the Spirit should fill us with dreams and visions of a better world. Let us dream, in the Spirit, of a classless society in which all people are regarded and treated as equals.

Let us dream, in the Spirit, of a nonviolent world in which there is no war, no terrorist attacks on innocent people, no murder, and no death penalty.

Let us dream, in the Spirit, of a world of economic justice in which all people have their basic needs met, and no one lives in poverty, hunger, or homelessness. Let us dream, in the Spirit, of a world of love, forgiveness, and service.

“Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” May the Spirit of God guide us to end the suffering we have brought on ourselves and “unite the faces and nations on earth to proclaim your glory.”

The People of God believes that it is led by the Spirit of the Lord, who fills the earth.Motivated by this faith, it labors to decipher authentic signs of God’s presence and purpose in the happenings, needs, and desires in which this People has a part along with other men of our age.For faith throws a new light on everything, manifests God’s design for man’s total vocation, and thus directs the mind to solutions which are fully human.

Dreams and Visions

TODAY’S READING by Gerald Darring from St. Louis University

Fr Dale has scheduled a Catechism of the Catholic Church class for Tues, June 6th, at 6 pm in the St Mary cafeteria. Beginning in Sept we will start monthly classes. We will be using, “United States Catholic Catechism for Adults.” We have 5 copies at $2 each, but can order more if more people are interested.

VOCATION CORNER

The entire church rejoices in priestly ordinations occurring in many dioceses this weekend. They show a sign of life and vitality to each local church. Young men and women who might be intrigued and then inspired by the commitment of those called to the priesthood are among the graces received by these ordinations. Those who might be considering a vocation will be infused with new life as we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon us this weekend.

Pentecost Voice The Holy Spirit, who came on Pentecost, gave voice to the apostles to proclaim the truth of the Gospel. The Spirit, the Soul of the Church, continues to enable the Church to speak, and enables us to speak in our individual capacity. As Cardinal Elio Sgreccia, President Emeritus of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life has said, “The Church must speak out in today's context on fundamental rights, the right to justice, the right to peace, but above all and in the first place, the right to life. If the Church did not speak, did not proclaim the truth, it would be abandoning its duty; it would be unfaithful to society, to the good of society. Therefore, its precise duty is the very liberty to intervene with word, and also with example -- the example of promoting human life, of intervening for the salvation of mankind."
