Who Is This Jesus?

AS WE GATHER

The Gospel stories of Jesus often have a familiarity to us that may diminish what the sacred writer wants us to understand. Simply put, there has never been any individual on this earth like Jesus. He has divine power that can heal the sick, revive the dead, and multiply bread and fish to feed multitudes. And He can even walk on water. Nobody else has ever done that. Only Jesus. As we worship and hear the Gospel account shared today, let us rediscover in Jesus our one and only Savior.

Pastor: We have begun our worship in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Let us speak together the words of the Apostles’ Creed regarding the First Person of the Holy Trinity.

People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.Pastor: What does this mean?People: I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given

me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them.He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life.He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and

mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him.This is most certainly true.

Confession and Absolution

Pastor: Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and ask His gracious forgiveness.

People: We confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature and by deed. We have not always put God first. We have used His holy name in ways that do not honor Him. We have not always been thoughtful caretakers of His creation and have not shared His bounty with others at all times. We have been heedless in word and deed and have not always kept our thoughts, words, and deeds pure and honorable. We sinned in ways we know and in ways we do not even recognize. We have wished for that which is not rightfully ours and have not put the best construction on all things and on all people. We pray God to have mercy on us, to forgive us all our sins, and to bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

Pastor: The almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT: Job 38:4-18(God tells Job of His Lordship over all Creation.) 

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone--while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?"Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set

its doors and bars in place, when I said, `This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'?  

"Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment. The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken.  

"Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22-33(Jesus walks on the water on the Sea of Galilee.) 

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

Sermon “Job and God” Pastor John Larson TEXT: Job 38:4-18

Apostles' CreedPeople: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And

in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

HOLY COMMUNION AT ASCENSION  

The Lord, our Host, invites to his Supper those who are baptized into the Christian faith, confess him as Savior, have been instructed and have examined themselves, truly repent of sins, believe the Risen Lord is present in the sacrament with his true body and blood, and resolve to live faithfully and obediently. For those with an intolerance to alcohol, the center ring of the tray contains grape juice. Gluten free wafers are available to those with wheat allergies. Children who have not been instructed, yet desire a blessing, are invited to come forward with arms crossed. When receiving the bread and wine, the communicant may respond with “Amen!”, a word of affirmation and belief.
