Weekly Task introduction

This week we will be working towards writing our own Supertato adventure! You can re-read the story if you need to or watch Mrs Palmer’s video from last week.

All the writing tasks we will look at will lead up to making a book at the end of the week. Watch the video of Mrs Johnstone explaining how we will do this and introduce the first task of a character description.

Today we are going to use words to describe Supertato. We will think about what he looks like as well as what type of character he is. You can use some of the words you collected last week (when you compared Supertato to a real potato) and I have included a word mat at the end of this planning for extra ideas. Encourage the children to explain their thinking and talk in full sentences, even though they will only add one or two words to their description (see video). For example, ‘I know that Supertato is kind because he saved the veggies’.

As an extra challenge, can you do the same for Evil Pea? I have included a villain word mat at the end of the planning to help with ideas.

Speech Bubbles

Watch the video of Mrs Johnstone explaining what a speech bubble is and how to use them. We will also look at punctuation and how speech is shown in the Supertato story. We will look at another book containing speech bubbles and then think about what Supertato might say – using the book for ideas. Mrs Johnstone will model how to write the speech bubble and introduce exclamation mark through Kung Fu punctuation (she-ya). We will also think about tricky words and words with sounds we have not learned yet. We will look at the word mats from yesterday and add useful words that we may want to use in our adventure at the end of the week.

Please note: Your focus here should be for your child to write a simple speech bubble. Support your child to sound out words that are phonetically correct and not necessarily spelt correctly. Only write words for them to copy if they are red words or contain sounds the children have not learned yet. Remember this is a writing task not a copying task.

Evil Pea Trap

Today you are going to be thinking like a super hero. You are going to invent a trap to capture the Evil pea. Ask your child to answer some how and why questions, for example: how will you trap him? Why do we need to stop him? What will you need? How will you make it? Where will we put the trap? Encourage them to have their own ideas and talk them through with you using full sentences. You can support them to use First, Then and Now sentences to organise their thoughts.

Children can then draw their trap and label its different parts. Where possible, use Fred talk and Fred fingers when writing labels and discuss red words as they come up. Children should then be able to make their trap (see wider curriculum planning).

Extra challenge: Encourage them to make a list of what they will need to make the trap.

Story Telling Day

This week is National storytelling week. In Wren and Robin we are passionate about stories as they feed into so many areas of learning including reading, writing, imagination, creativity the list is endless! As your children progress up through the school, they are expected to plan a story or piece of writing before they actually write and this all begins with storytelling.

Today you and your child have the opportunity to make up a brand new adventure for Supertato or if they prefer they can retell the story from this week. The idea is they use their own ideas and put the story into their own words. As always we would encourage full sentences but think about the skills we have looked at this week:

Describing words

Use of First, Then, Now

Speech and exclamation marks – can they get these into their story. Encourage them to use story language and character voices.

On the video, Mrs Johnstone will use the story board game to think of a story on the spot using the skills we have looked at this week. It is included at the end of this planning for you to play.

At the end of the video, Mrs Johnstone will discuss tomorrow’s task of writing a book.

Supertato – The Adventure

Today you get the chance to be a Super hero author just like Sue Hendra! You are going to write your very own adventure. This is an independent task. Think about the skills we have looked at this week. Children do not need to finish the whole story at once. Keep re-telling the story and re-reading what they write as they go along to check it makes sense. Make this as exciting as possible refer back to the props they made and the word mats and character descriptions they produced earlier in the week. They can act out the story and you could film them but it is important that they do write something. If they would prefer to write about another Super hero that is fine just make sure they apply the skills we learned over the week to their story. It would be good to include pictures/drawings as this will break up the writing and help them to stay on track with the story. Remember to remind them of the Kung Fu punctuation they learned with Mrs Johnstone previously (capital letter, finger spaces, full stops). Most importantly celebrate the end result get the children to read to a family member or to me on Tapestry I would love to hear them.

Phonics Lessons – These lessons are provided by Read Write Inc (RWI). They will be invaluable in demonstrating to you exactly how we teach the sounds and lessons.

This week we will be revising speed set 1 – ‘special friends’ sounds. Do revise all speed set 1 sounds, it will help to embed their learning fully and please revisit any videos or sounds or words that your child is struggling with.

Phonics Objectives

To hear and say initial sounds in words

To segment sounds in simple words – cvc words (consonant-vowel-consonant words, e.g c-a-t)

To revise all sounds learned so far

To practise reading and writing sh, ch, th, ng, nk

Friday –

Revise and catch up

This is your chance to revisit the sounds by either reading or spelling the ones you found tricky this week or catching up on the ones above. You may even want to revisit the reading or spelling word time lessons from the past week. There is a lot to get through.

Please remember correct letter formation every time you write the sounds. Use your green book to help – say the rhyme as you write to help or look at the sound sheet we sent home before the half term.

If you would like an extra challenge, go to Oxford Owl and read some books browse the e-library under Read Write Inc and start with the Red Ditty books and then progress onto Green.

Use your Fred talk and Fred fingers as you write (pinch your fingers as you say each sound in the word)

Remember you still have your green book to remind you of the sounds we have previously learned in school.
