Assessment Tool for High Beginner 4 – Unit 11 Objective: To have students design a vacation plan for the group suggesting means of transportation and other necessary services. Grammar & Vocabulary Reviewed: Modal verbs (SHOULD / COULD) to express possibility and suggestions Means of transportation, types of tickets Airport announcements and procedures PRE: Announce the group that they will be making a trip to celebrate they will be finishing the course soon. Since this a group trip everybody has to contribute to buy the tickets and book all the necessary services. Write on the board how much money each person is willing to contribute with for buying tickets. Write all these amounts and then add them up. The total of this will be the budget for tickets. Now students will be paired up and each pair will think of a destination for the class to go to –a place where people don’t speak any Spanish. WHILE: With a destination clear in mind students will now look for different transportation means they can take in order to get there. Have them look for tickets in airline websites, train station websites, bus terminal websites, etc. –they must remember there is a budget they have to stick to. It is not necessary they choose a kind of transportation that will take them there in just one trip. They can look for cheap options where they can do connections, i.e. flying to a nearby city and then taking a train or a bus to the final destination or more if necessary, and so on. Now, pairs will brainstorm on a list of other services they will need. Suggest thinking of: Hotel or hostel reservations Transportation within the destination

Have them look for companies or people who offer these services in the destination they chose –remind them of looking for something good but affordable, since everybody is contributing again to pay for all these services.

POST: Each pair will prepare a presentation where, by using modal verbs to express possibility or suggestion, and by using all the vocabulary learned during the unit, they will explain why they think their vacation plan is the best option for the group.
