Budget DiscussionOverview of M-G-R Assignment. M-G-R is Meaningful, Genuine and Relevant. Student’s reality is different from their classmate. This exercise allows a budget discussion based upon random life experiences. Update the Budget cards to fit YOUR families. Randomly assign housing, transportation and career cards to each student. I recommend using careers available to students with a high school diploma, and some with additional training. I “set up” the assignments so that the only students who can balance their budget are ones who 1) have a skilled job, or 2) have made a financial decision to walk, ride a bus, or live at home. I also hand out leisure items (with expenses) such as a dog, motorbike, Netflix, Amazon Prime, vacation, gaming, etc.

Name some reasons to make a budget:To understand how the money you have coming in, and the money you have going outTo control how much you spend; how much you saveTo plan so you can make choicesTo save enough money for education To save enough money to achieve personal goals (buy a car, take music lessons, and attend a special event) To know, once you pay your bills, how much is left for fun (or even savings!!)To empower you, and make you more independent

What expenses should be included? Every single one! If it costs money, include it. A few examples:Housing (rent, heat, electricity, water, trash) Transportation (car payments, gas, tolls, parking; bus/train fares) Communication (cell phone, internet, cable) Food (snacks and meals) Clothing and electronics Personal entertainment (Netflix, going to the movies, sports events, concerts) Personal items (shampoo, make-up, cologne, backpack, purse)

What do you do with a budget once it's "finished"?Study it to see if it works

Make changes so it will be easier to follow Do it! Adjust as income or expenses change

If your budget does not balance, what can you change?Career? Transportation? Housing?

Have you ever made a budget? Describe your own budgeting experience.Other resources:

Pin the Tail on the Career

Using a poster from College in Colorado, blindfold 3 volunteers. Let them know they will be blindfolded and turned slowly, just like pin the tail on the donkey.

Divide the room into 3 sections represented by each volunteer. Each section can cheer by whispering tips for placement.

Have the volunteers choose their career.

Option 1:

Use this exercise results so all students in each section will use that career for the SLOPE exercise.

Option 2:

Use this exercise as an introduction to encourage students to search for a Career Pathway in a Growing Industry

PowerPoint:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_q0bsaD-h_trlL6i2OBfEjzDE0PPfAelmR78r_wUED4/edit?usp=sharing

Option 3:

I use this exercise to encourage students to complete self-assessment surveys because pin the tail is not how you want to choose your career.

Rolling for Roles

Have students roll the dice for:

Interview practice—who is interviewer/interviewee

Slope activity- black flags roll for order of discussion #1 tells career and salary and class works to adjust loans to be more viable.

Any opportunity for order or role.

(Honestly, my seniors love when the dice come out!)

Ski the Slope

SLOPE calculates your estimated monthly payment for student loans and compares it to your projected earnings for your career choice. The results will indicate how much you can borrow comfortably based upon your career. I assign careers and require them to all use same financial details. I hand out flags for them to wave, or have color corners of the room for them to move to their color. As a classroom, we explore opportunities that would move a student from black to blue or blue to green.

We have skiers on the slope. If you're a skier then you know there are green, blue, and black slopes in the trail guide.

Green is for comfortable skiing. Blue is for intermediate skiers with good skills. Black is for advanced skiers who like to take risks!

Your results will also be on green, blue, and black slopes. You want to be on the green slopes. You choose your career from over 20 occupational categories in a drop-down box. After choosing your

category, pick the specific career from a new drop-down box. Entry-level salaries are displayed in each career.

You enter each loan you plan to borrow by academic year and grade level. This will take a little planning. There is a chart with loan limits to help you. You also need to estimate the dates you will start school and plan to graduate (for calculating capitalized interest).

You may change the interest rate, loan term (years for repayment), and minimum monthly payments that are already entered. We used the maximum interest rate, standard loan term, and minimum payment requirements for new loans. We estimated them for private alternative loans.

You can see how much you can save on interest if you shorten the loan term or raise the minimum payments (you may have to run SLOPE with the defaults first to see what the loan term and payment amount would ordinarily be). You can also see how much lower your payments will be if you choose to pay interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan while you are in school and during your grace period.

Ready to go skiing?

CollegeinColorado.org>Financial Aid Planning>Financial Aid Calculators>SLOPE CalculatorTo fill in the calculator, I use the next year dates with a 4-year graduation, Career Category>Community and Social Services>Counselors. Explain what it means to pay interest during school and RECOMMEND it. I do not change the locked in details for Loans. I enter in the only unsub and my slope is Year 1 max $5,500. Year 2 max $6,500. Year 3 max $7,500, Year 4 max $7,500. Subsidized is need-based, unsubsidized is not. Loan payments begin 6 months after you are no longer half-time in school.

Resources you are welcome to use:From a previous CCDA Newsletter article by Joanna Peters:

As career professionals, we are constantly on the search for resources to assist our clients in their career search. Across the state of Colorado, from the Governor’s office to state businesses, from the Department of Labor and Employment to College in Colorado, from workforce centers to university campuses and high school classrooms, the conversation is collaborative. Recognizing that “by 2020, 65 percent of all jobs—compared to 28 percent in 1973—will require some form of postsecondary education”, it is important for our clients to learn how to flex and change with the needs of our job market.

It is also important for us to be able to advise our clients on how to find the additional training and education needed for their future career. We know that there are apprenticeships, certifications, internships, training, certificate programs, degrees and more that will further the ability for our clients to achieve a livable wage and more. Resources are being developed to make our advising robust.

The 2017 Colorado Talent Pipeline Report*2 was recently released. This report not only references the supply and demand of talent in our state, but it also provides strategies for strengthening our talent pipeline. 3 Jobs in the state, it acknowledges the changing demographics in our state. The overview of the report “highlights high-demand, high-growth jobs, that pay a good wage in two earnings tiers: one including jobs meeting a living wage for a family of three (one working adult), and a second including jobs meeting a living wage for an individual.”

*Report released by The Colorado Workforce Development Council, in collaboration partnerships with the Department of Higher Education, the Department of Education, the Department of Labor and Employment, the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, with support from the office of State Planning and Budgeting and the State Demography Office at the Department of Local Affairs.
