Wakefield Elementary K4 Program
2020-2021
Life in K4
Kindergarten is a wonderful place where children get to figure out their world and their place in it through play. Furthering that philosophy, it is in my practice to centre the content and explorations on the group’s interest. Based on what is being presented in their free play, I develop units of inquiry around what they show an interest in. There is always a question/ voting period to see if it something that the students would like to explore. The themes and concepts are investigated with literature, play, art, whole group conversations, etc. This could last for a whole month or a couple of weeks. It depends on how long the students stay engaged. During these explorations, we begin to understand the world around us. We figure out problem-solving strategies. We learn to use language to express the excitement and frustrations of everyday. We’re learning how to hold a pencil, write our name, use scissors, put a marker cap back on properly, how to respect the space we learn in. It is incredible just how many pivotal life lessons can be explored during one day in K4.
Schedule
It is often a
parent’s wonder what their child may be up to
during the week at school… the question “What did you do at school today?” is often met with “I don’t know”. Here is a quick peak into what the K4 program looks like during the week. Please note that the K4 program runs on the 6 day cycle, so that even if your child does not attend each day of the week, they will be able to enjoy all of the wonderful things happening in our program.

Additional ProgrammingOn Monday mornings, our class enjoys 30 minutes of Yoga instruction with Lori D’Aoust. She enlightens us with a lot of breathing activities, movements to manage anxiety and express emotions, etc. This is an amazing source of social emotional learning. On Thursday mornings, our class is paired up with the Grade
4 students upstairs for Reading Buddies. It gives our K4s some other friendly faces in the school to interact with out on the playground.
