WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of James F. Scanlan, Jr. on December 13, 2000; and

WHEREAS: James was the devoted son of the late James F. and Mary V. (Wall) Scanlan; and

WHEREAS: James was a 1949 graduate of Boston College Law School; and

WHEREAS: James was a World War II Navy Combat Veteran from 1944-1946; and

WHEREAS: James was an FBI agent from 1951-1977, the State Racing Commissioner from 1977-1979 and the Director of Bureau of Special Investigations from 1979-1984, and was known for being "the toughest and most demanding agent in the Boston office;" and

WHEREAS: James was the beloved husband of Ruth A. (Savage) Scanlan; and

WHEREAS: James was the loving father of James F. Scanlan, III, Patricia M. Canniff, Paula R. Rizzo, Jean M. Gomez and Marie L. Dooley; and

WHEREAS: James was the brother of Marie Sybertz, Ruth, John and Thomas Scanlan; and

WHEREAS: James was the grandfather of fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: James’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family and friends; and

WHEREAS: Zack Habtemichael of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School was named Boston Globe 2000 All-Scholastic Boys’ Cross Country; and

WHEREAS: At 5 foot 1 inch and 87 pounds, Habtemichael proves once again that size does not matter. The highlight of his season came at the Brown Invitational, when he shocked the field by winning the Varsity 2 race (16:08); and

WHEREAS: The Greater Boston League champion, Habtemichael started the season by finishing second (16:22) in the large school race at the Bay State Invitational; and

WHEREAS: Zack Habtemichael broke the school freshman 2-mile record (10:04), which is quite an accomplishment considering all the great runners Cambridge has had over the years; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spent his life leading the forces of good in its eternal struggle with the powers of injustice and inequality, and inspired the oppressed to break the bonds of subjugation by proclaiming "To accept injustice or segregation passively is to say to the oppressor that his actions are morally right;" and

WHEREAS: Through sit-ins and marches, legal agitation and moral persuasion, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther Ling, Jr. led this country's pursuit of civil rights, voting rights, and, indeed human rights; and

WHEREAS: Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King suffered incarceration, intimidation, humiliation, and degradation for his dream, yet he never retreated; indeed, he intensified his struggle; and

WHEREAS: Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream of a world where all men and women are treated equally has led people from all across the globe to join in the never-ending fight for freedom; and

WHEREAS: By act of Congress, the third Monday of January is celebrated as the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday; and

WHEREAS: Teresa was a teacher and librarian in Wethersfield, Connecticut; and

WHEREAS: Teresa was the mother of Joyce Backman and Karin J. Phillips; and

WHEREAS: Teresa was the grandmother of Laura Phillips and her husband Ben Carr and Jason Ellis Backman;

WHEREAS: Teresa is also survived by Carl R. Nordblom, a special member of the family; and

WHEREAS: Teresa’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family and friends; and

WHEREAS: Teresa was a matriarch without peer, who brought with her to Cambridge much wisdom, wit and grace; and

WHEREAS: On February 11, 1996, Kenneth was assigned to Engine Company 8 and to the Headquarters on October 17, 1999; and

WHEREAS: Ben P. Bruckner will be the last Eagle Scout recognized under the Cambridge Boy Scout Council before it becomes one Middlesex Council; and

WHEREAS: Ben's community service project was the stenciling of catch basins in Cambridgeport and Riverside so that people would not pour pollutants into them and this project will benefit the entire community; and

WHEREAS: Ben chose his community service project because of his deep concern about the environment and water quality of the Charles River on which he kayaks; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the Cambridge City Council that John Woods is leaving the housing division of the Community Development Department (CDD) for an exciting new job as Director of Housing Development for the Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation; and

WHEREAS: John started work at the Community Development Department in June, 1997; and

WHEREAS: John has been a key participant in several important affordable housing projects: 2525 Massachusetts Avenue, the purchase of the 95 unit Bedrick property, the purchase of Squirrel Nut Brand Factory, the purchase of 65 units at Lancaster Street, as well as many development projects throughout the City such as the Joyce Chen properties on Rindge Avenue and Spring Street; and

WHEREAS: John has also helped dozens of Cambridge residents purchase their first homes by providing counseling, help and financial assistance through the City's first-time homebuyer program; and

WHEREAS: John's knowledge of the technicalities of affordable housing programs and his superb interpersonal skills have earned him widespread and well-deserved respect and appreciation in Cambridge; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record thanking John Woods for his important contribution to affordable housing in Cambridge, and wishing him well in his new position; and be it further

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Davis J. Pasquariello on January 6, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Davis's passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his wife Rose M. (Parilla) Pasquariello; his son Davis J. Pasquariello, Jr.; his daughters Marilyn Athanas, Arlene D'Angelo and Linda Rand; his thirteen grandchildren, his fourteen great grandchildren and his two great great grandchildren; his brothers Theodore and Anthony Pasquariello; and his sisters Anna Desmond and Rosemarie Fimiani; and

WHEREAS: Davis will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it
