God never gives us discernment in order that we may criticize, but that we may intercede.Jesus, help us to be Your eyes and ears, Your hands and feet, Your mind and voice. All thanks and praise and honor and glory be to you, most beloved triune God- forever. Amen.

It’s the Seventh Annual Shrove Tuesday Jambalaya SupperTuesday, March 4th –

Dinners will be served between 5:30 and 7:30 pm in Hughson Hall…where we mark the day before Lent begins, or – to put it another way - Mardi Gras! That’s how the jambalaya tradition at Calvary began.Dinners include jambalaya with or without shrimp, salad, dressing, corn muffin, butter, and a slice of homemade pecan pie, and your choice of bottled water, coffee, tea or milk.  (You may BYO beer or wine.)  For kids or the jambalaya-averse there’s blue-box macaroni and cheese.  Eat-in or take-out!Cost? Same price as the last two years! $7 per adult, $3 per child 12 and under, or $25 per family (immediate family only.  Pre-reserve your dinner by signing up in the booklet in the reception area under the bulletin board.  Pay at the Hughson Hall door. And stay for the concert!!

Jazz Concert complements Jambalaya SupperOur Mardi Gras-inspired supper is complemented this year by a New Orleans inspired jazz concert. Barry Boyd of the Colored Musicians Club will head a five-piece jazz band, performing a concert in the church sanctuary beginning at 7:00 pm. The concert is free, though proceeds from a suggested free-will donation of $10 (being accepted at the entryway doors) will help offset costs. The concert is being sponsored by a newly formed organization at Calvary – “Great Music @ Calvary” – which supports just that here and throughout the community.Alex Benestelli will be on hand to introduce the event, and speak on the unique connection between jazz and the Episcopal Church. Share this unique event with coworkers, friends, family, and anyone who appreciates good music, especially jazz. Flyers are available for you to take (in the Reception Room) and display where you work, or businesses and organizations you frequent. Help us spread the word!!

We sure could use your help for these events!

For the supper, we need help setting up tables and the serving station, servers to serve dinners and runners to refill the food stations, and clean up tables during serving times, and a clean-up crew. Please see the volunteer sign-up sheets to be a part of this behind-the-scenes kitchen action. Questions? Call Cris Hicks – [email protected], or 689-4526 (cell: 868-7738). For the jazz concert, we need warm, friendly greeters to welcome the public and hand out concert leaflets, cashiers to accept the freewill donations, and ushers to manage seating (especially if we have a large crowd). If you can offer your services, please contact Joan Scalfani – [email protected], or 634-4710.

Circles and NewcomersCircles 2014 will run for this entire calendar year for the first time, instead of the shorter Fall through Spring school-type year.  So, how are your groups doing?  Have you met...set a date...hosted a Coffee Hour...or welcomed some Newcomers to a get-together?  If you haven't started yet, don't panic—it's only February!  You have plenty of time, but don't wait too long—you know how busy the Calvary calendar can get!!  Start enjoying the best fellowship and food in town! If you are a Newcomer, you may be approached by someone you don't know—yet—with an invitation to join his or her group for a dinner or brunch or some other gathering.  Don't be bashful; join in the fun!  And if you haven't been approached and think this sounds like an interesting opportunity, watch for the Circles groups that host one Coffee Hour each month, introduce yourselves, and tell them you'd love to be included in a get-together.  You'll be amazed at how much more you learn about your fellow parishioners in these informal groups over a simple meal and perhaps a glass of vino! For more information about Circles, you may contact Dale and Elizabeth Harten at 626-5787 or [email protected].  If you have any pictures of your Circles in action or stories of your adventures, please share them with us.

Planned GivingThose of you who attended the Annual Meeting or the "Ask the Rector" Adult Education session heard Fr. Ethan speak of the importance of Planned Giving to Calvary's endowment in funding future ministries.  It is because those who came before us made such gifts from their estates that we enjoy the Calvary campus, many of our arts and furnishings, and our organ and carillon today.  Yet, in comparison to similar churches, Calvary's endowment fund is quite small.  As you prepare your annual income taxes, crunch the numbers in your household budgets, and make your own tough financial choices, please take time to reflect on the legacy you want to leave to the future generations of Episcopalians who, like us, will call Calvary their parish home. For more information on making a planned gift to Calvary's Endowment Fund and becoming a member of Calvary's Legacy Society, you may contact Patty Rooss (839-1058) or Elizabeth Harten (626-5787).
