ntsMidterm Exam is Thursday, November 11th and Friday, November 12th!

Topics we have covered so far this year that will be on the Midterm Exam

1.)Chemistry of Life1

Do you practice good study skills?

How to go about studying tips Start studying early enough

Gather materials from your notes, textbook, or folder

Choose a good place to study Identify what you know and what you

don’t know (WHAT to study). Ask your teacher or friends with help

if you are confused with a topic. Make flash cards Know yourself: do you learn better in

a group or individual study environment?

Atoms and MoleculesOrganic Molecules and their subunits-Carbohydrates (Glucose), Lipids (Fatty Acids), Protein (Amino Acids), Nucleic Acids (Bases).

Inorganic Molecules (Any molecules that lack carbon and hydrogen) Indicators- Iodine and Benedicts Solutions (What do they test for?) pH scale- 1-14 (7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic, above 7 is basic) Grand Slam of Graphing (Use the four steps in order to make awesome graphs!) Enzymes- Proteins that speed up the rate of chemical reactions Optimum pH and temperature (37 degrees Celsius and a pH of 7) Optimum points on graphs (the highest point of a graph) Enzymes- Lock and key model –Specific Shape

2. The Scientific Method Hypothesis- I think that…. Acid Rain affects plant growth. Independent variable- The variable that I change (ex. The pH of the rain water) Dependent variable- The variable we measure (ex. Plant growth) Control and experimental groups (ex. Control group will get water with a pH of7, the

experimental groups will get different pH levels of water) Two factors that must be kept the same (the amount of sunlight given to the plant and the

type of plant). The data that must be collected- (Measure the plant growth every day with a ruler). Evidence to support my hypothesis (If the plants grew taller each day then my hypothesis is

supported). How can I improve this experiment? By keeping it R E-A-L-S Repeat Experiment, Automatic, Larger Samples

3. The Cell What are the functions of the cell organelles? Mitochondria, Nucleus, Ribosomes, Cell Membrane, Vacuole, Chloroplast, cell Wall,

Endoplasmic Reticulum. The difference between Animal and Plant Cells Diffusion- The movement of Molecules through a selectively permeable membrane from a

high concentration to a low concentration Osmosis- The diffusion of water across a membrane from high to low concentration Passive Transport –Diffusion and Osmosis Active Transport- The movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an area

of high concentration.-Requires Energy (ATP).

DTM lab- Diffusion through a membrane state lab 2 indicators used- Iodine and Benedicts Iodine tests for starch – turns it black Benedicts tests for glucose- turns it orange Iodine diffused into the cell turning it black Glucose diffused out into the beaker, when we tested it with Benedicts it turned orange. Starch did not diffuse out because the molecules are too big. SALT SUCKS Wherever there is a higher concentration of salt, water will move in that direction. If you add salt water to a cell, the cell membrane and cytoplasm shrink. If you add distilled water to a cell, it will swell (get bigger).

Homeostasis- The ability to maintain an internal environment despite canges in the external environment
