Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal begins at 2:40 using the following procedures:

1. All car riders are dismissed through the side door at the end of the music hallway.  Please assist us by pulling up as far as you can in the Hug and Hop lane and remaining in your vehicle.  When your child sees you, he/she will be escorted to your car at which time you may leave the Hug and Hop lane.  Parents who wish to meet their child at the parent waiting area near the music hallway side door or across the parking lot on the grass median between the crosswalks, must park in a parking space in the lot, instead of in the Hug and Hop lane. All cars must exit the lot through the Town Center Blvd. driveway exit.

2. All bus riders are dismissed to the back door where they are escorted to the bus loop.  This includes all aftercare van riders.

3. Once we are assured that most vehicular traffic has cleared, we will begin walker dismissal.

4. Town Center Walkers (all students who walk on Town Center Blvd. toward Charter Oaks Blvd. to get home) are dismissed through the side door at the end of the 1st/2nd grade hallway and proceed through the kindergarten playground to the parent waiting area.

5. Back Door Walkers (all students who live behind the school and do not need to cross Blue Water Blvd. at the intersection of Town Center Blvd.) are dismissed through the back door and proceed to the parent waiting area located at the corner of the building.

6. Blue Water Walkers (all students who must use the crossing guard intersection of Town Center Blvd. and Blue Water Blvd.) are dismissed through the front doors of the school. The parent waiting area will be located across the parking lot on the grass median between the crosswalks.

7. Open Door students are dismissed to the extended day care room.

It is imperative that a clear walking path is maintained in order for students to exit the building and safely cross the street. We ask that parents who wish to meet their children to please remain in one of the the parent waiting areas located on the kindergarten playground, near the side music hallway door, near the back door, or across the parking lot on the grass median between the crosswalks. Please avoid standing at the main entrance and blocking students' paths home. Also, please avoid parking in the hug & hop lane. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Pre-K

Hi there families!

I am so excited about how much reading we have done our first month! Both classes are more than halfway to 100! Keep reading this month! We will be digging into letters and sight words this month, building on our math concepts, and continuing to learn how to be a good friend in our school! Thank you always for your patience and continued collaboration with your child’s education

Happy Learning,

Ms. Brock aka Mrs. C

Kindergarten Corner

This month in Kindergarten we will be continuing with our first Theme Unit: “The Power of Me”.  In this theme your child has been exploring how they are unique, important, and special.  We are learning a lot in school already and have been having so much fun finding out about how to be a good friend and how to be a good citizen in school and at home.  We had a great time learning all about our new friends when we shared our “All About Me” projects last month.  Soon we will discuss what makes a family, what healthy foods look like, and how exercising is good for us.  For Language and Literacy skills we will continue to work on letter identification, high frequency words, rhyming, blending, and segmenting sounds in words.  In Math we will continue to practice counting to 31, counting up to 10 objects using number names, writing to 10, naming, describing, and building basic 2D and 3D shapes, and describing objects using positional words.  We have been having so much fun making so many new friends at school!

First Grade

WOW! We’re already into the second month of the school year and we have been learning and mastering the rules and routines of first grade. THE CATERPILLAR’S ARE HERE and the first graders are officially Entomologists. As we continue observing the metamorphosis of these amazing creatures, we will be learning ways to help the Monarchs once they return in the Spring. We will also be finishing up Theme 1 by focusing on "How do the seasons create change?" and "How does our changing environment affect us." Interims will be sent home by October 7th. School will be closed so that conferences can be held on October 15th and 16th. Conference meeting forms will be sent home to schedule you time and day. Please look for the forms and return them promptly to ensure you have a chance to meet with your child’s teacher. Lastly, thank you so much for every family that was able to attend our Back to School Night! It was a wonderful turnout – we were thrilled to see the amount of parental support. As we mentioned, this is a partnership. Continue to encourage your child to do their best and show P.R.I.D.E daily. Every week, a student who has consistently demonstrated perseverance, respect, integrity, discipline, and excellence earns the title Lion Cub of the week. The students have been working hard. We're excited to see who earns it next!

Second Grade

The 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start! We are exploring how we can change the world by thinking creatively and how we can change the world by demonstrating leadership. Students are practicing the CRA: Concrete, Representational and Abstract Model in math by first using manipulatives, then drawing or showing their work on paper and moving toward expressing their answer and process with numbers and equations. Please remember that sweaters that students wear in the classroom must follow the school uniform policy. They can be solid navy, white or light blue with no hood. Keep an eye out for graded assignments and teacher/school communication coming home each week in the blue communication folders. These should be cleaned out each night. Thank you for your cooperation!

Third Grade

Wow! We cannot believe that it has already been a month! Third grade has launched off to both an amazing and exciting start! Please be sure to continue to refer to your child’s syllabus for any questions, information about our curriculum, or for your child’s teachers contact information.

In Guided Reading, we will continue to be focusing on  reading comprehension through targeted guided reading small group instruction and with grade leveled explicit comprehension lessons. In Math, we will be wrapping up our foundations of multiplication and division; and begin to transition into developing conceptual understanding of area. In Science, we will also be continuing exploring forces and interactions- specifically on equal/unequal forces, patterns of motion, how objects interact with each other, and solving simple problems using magnets! In Social Studies, we will be studying the four disciplines in Social Studies- geography, history, civics, and economics.

First marking period interim reports will be distributed on October 7th and Parent Teacher Conferences will be on October 15th and 16th. Please reach out to your child’s teacher for any questions/concerns that you may have. Our team continues to look forward for what has and what will continue to be a fantastic year!

Fourth Grade

In the month of October, 4th grade will be moving into learning about animal adaptations, place value concepts, explorers, more reading skills, as well as continuing our personal narrative writing.

Fifth GradeWe would like to thank the many families who were able to join us on Back to School Night. It was a wonderful opportunity to share information and build a stronger connection between home and school. Fifth graders continue to adjust to the independence and rigor of the 5th grade curriculum. This month in math, students will explore multiplying multi-digit numbers using a variety of strategies involving place value (area model and partial products) and connect their understanding to solve problems using the standard algorithm for multiplication. They will also solve division problems with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, and relate their understanding of arrays to the area-model and partial quotients method. We encourage them to strive to practice their basic facts each day. Please refer to the Unit 2 parent letter sent home at the beginning of the unit for ways to help your child with math homework.  In reading/language arts and social studies, we will continue our unit centered on communication. Students will make connections between how early Americans strove and struggled to communicate with the Native Americans who already inhabited the land. They will learn about the early colonial period and focus on how the three geographic regions developed and interacted with each other. In addition, they will develop basic historiography skills, such as sourcing and close reading of historical text. Students will utilize academic vocabulary to write from different perspectives while incorporating evidence from text selections and a variety of primary sources. In science, we will continue Unit 1, Matter, through the exploration of mass and volume. Students shall be thoroughly involved through conducting a variety of hands-on investigations. Keep your eyes open for an invitation for a proposed time for October 15 and 16th Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Triple E Arts & Humanities

This month we will begin team building and working collaboratively. We will be setting the norms for the classrooms using Dance, Music, Theater and Visual Arts. We will dive deeper into what Project Based learning is and how the students will have an active role in the learning. This will be exciting as we begin preparing for the first Project Based Learning units of the year.

The music department is starting ensemble rehearsals for chorus as we speak. The winter concert is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, December 17th. Save the date now, parents. We look forward to a great turnout!General music classes are using a new, project-based learning curriculum with our 5th graders this year, and they are producing wonderful music. Ask them about the soundscapes they’ve been creating! Our other grade level classes are exploring and reviewing the elements of music: rhythm, form, melody, tone color, dynamics, texture, and harmony. Ask them about dynamics and our magic word: tempo!

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PTA PRESIDENT

Welcome to our new and returning students and families.  My name is Nikkia T. Hinton and I look forward to serving as your PTA President for another school year.  I am the proud parent of a 5th grader at SOE and my son has been a student since pre-k.  During our time here, I have served as the PTA Secretary, a Chairperson for multiple committees and this is my last year as the PTA President.

The PTA has many exciting and enriching activities planned for this year to keep your family engaged as we continue to build a solid community.  Huge thanks to our parent volunteers from the previous years.  I am forever grateful for your contributions.  We are eagerly looking forward to increasing our volunteer participation by welcoming new parent and teacher liaisons.

Speaking of volunteers, many of the people who work so diligently for the PTA have either been volunteering for many years or have children in their final year at the school.  What does that mean?  It means that we need parents to pass the baton to!  Without you to take on positions that either are vacant or will be vacant at the end of this school year, the PTA will be dissolved.

For a list of Board positions that need to be filled by June in order for the PTA to continue beyond this year, please email [email protected] or visit www.sevenoakspta.org and click on Ask The PTA to submit your inquiry.  We also have non-board member positions open that would only take about 1-2 hours of your time per month.  These fun committee roles involve assisting with planning and hosting amazing events for the students.

It is my pleasure to serve you and I look forward to a fantastic year.

Sincerely,Nikkia T. Hinton

Outside FoodIn consideration of wellness issues and student allergies, outside food is discouraged

to share with classmates.

Notice to Parents and VisitorsAll parents/visitors must report to the main office before proceeding into the school. The

safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us.  Our school will be utilizing a system for checking in all visitors.  The system is called: V Soft by RaptorWare.  When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a staff person in the school office.  This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected:  your photo, your name, and your date of birth.  This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country.  If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the use of your ID, then access to the school will be denied.  On future visits to a school, in which you have previously registered, you will only be asked to show your ID as your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors.  You will also be asked to sign out with the office upon leaving the school so that we know you have departed the building.  The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server.

We ask that you say your morning goodbyes at the front door and allow your child to proceed to his/her class independently. We also ask that you help your child be responsible for bringing all materials needed every day, including lunches, instruments and homework. Your cooperation in this security effort is greatly appreciated.Should you have any questions, please contact the Supervisor of School Security, 410-222-5083.

1 Attendance Regular school attendance is an important factor in student success. As a parent, you can

encourage proper attendance by ensuring that your child gets adequate rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and has adequate time to catch the school bus or walk to school.

There are lawful reasons for absence from school. Whenever your child is absent, you must provide a note of explanation to the school within three days of your child’s return to school. Absences of five consecutive days or more require a physician’s note.

School hours are from 8:15 a.m. until 2:40 p.m. Students who walk or are driven to school should plan to arrive between 7:55a.m.-8:10 a.m. Students should not be dropped off before 7:55 a.m., as there is no supervision until this time. All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 8:15 a.m. so as not to be marked tardy. We highly recommend that all communities form walking groups so students can walk together and adults can take turns supervising the walk to and from school.

HEALTHROOM NEWS As the beginning of the school year quickly approaches, we in the health room would like to offer some tips that will likely aid in making this school year successful and maximizing the amount of time that your child spends within the classroom setting.

Tip 1 – Please bring any prescribed or over the counter medications that you would like to be available to your child within the health room/school day to the health room along with a completed physician’s order. We have the forms in our health room and can also be found on the AACPS.org website

Tip 2 – Please notify the health room staff of any medical needs that your child may experience.

Tip 3 – Please provide a change of season appropriate clothes for your child. These can be kept in a ziploc bag and can either be stored in their book bag or locker.

Tip 4 – Please take a moment to talk with your child about the importance of being present within the classroom.

This is the time of year where children are getting sick during school and need to be sent home. If you have recently changed phone numbers, please take a moment to verify that the school has your current phone number(s) on file.

Should I keep my child home?

If your child has a temperature of 100◦ or above with a cough or sore throat, feels nauseated or has vomited, or he/she has a rash that has not been diagnosed by a doctor, your child should be kept home from school. Children must be fever free (less than 100◦) for 24 hours without any fever reducing medication before he/she can return to school. Please encourage your child to practice good health habits: get adequate rest, eat healthy meals, exercise daily, and wash his/her hands frequently. All of these help to keep your child healthy during flu and cold season!

NO FLU VACCINE AT SCHOOL THIS YEAR! The American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC recommend everyone over the age of 6 months receive a flu shot. Please plan to

make arrangements through your pediatrician to get a flu shot for your child this year.

Important Message from the Health Room

This is a reminder to all parents of the medication policy in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Student possession of any medication, prescription, or over the counter medications in school is prohibited unless a “Parent Request to Administer Medication at School” is on file in the health room. Over the counter medications include but are not limited to: cough drops, antacids, medicated lip balm, medicated lotions/creams/ointments, etc. This form needs to be completed by the physician and parent or guardian. The medication ordered by the physician, needs to be brought by the parent/guardian in a labeled prescription bottle, or be in an unopened bottle/box if an over the counter medication, like Tylenol or Advil, has been prescribed.

The medication is kept in the health room in a locked cabinet and is dispensed as needed per physician orders to the student in the health room.

Parents, it is a great idea to have medication on file for your child when they come to the health room for minor illnesses such as a headache, stomachaches, and cramps. They can come to the health room, receive the medication, rest for a few minutes and return to class. This way they are not missing important class work.

If your child uses an inhaler for their asthma and needs to have one in school, they must follow the same procedure as having medication in school. No student is to be in possession of any form of medication in school unless the proper forms are completed and on file in the health room.

Attached is the Medication Administration form that needs to be completed by a physician and parent or guardian in order for your child to receive medication at school. Please provide this form to your health care provider if you would like your child to receive medication during this school year.

“Parent’s Request to Administer Medication at School” on next page.
