Digital Photography Brandon Woelfel Inspired Project Objective: Student will gain skills in portrait photography and editing skills inspired by Brandon Woelfel. Portraits are an every day part of our lives with the advent of smartphones with cameras at the touch of your finger. “In our image-propelled social media era, some photographers fear for the future of the art, while others are galvanised by it. As technology increasingly shapes how we see and share the world, how is photography changing in response?” - Sean O'Hagan , The Guardian In 2012 Facebook users alone were uploading 300 million photographs a day, while the number of images posted on Flickr and Instagram had exceeded the 11 billion mark. Since then, the numbers have become even more mind- boggling: 350 m illion photographs a day uploaded on Facebook; 95 m illion photographs and videos shared on Instagram daily. The combined number of images shared uploaded on both platforms now exceeds 290 billion, while there are 188 m illion daily active users of Snapchat. - Sean O'Hagan , The Guardian Is the “art of photography” becoming lost in the “like” neediness of social media? Or is a generation of image- makers emerging while propelling creativity and heightening the value of the medium? Among the sea of Instagram artists is New York based photographer, Brandon Woelfel. His colorful work illustrates understanding of lighting, editing skills and careful positioning of his models. These are all elements that make his work successful and you should strive to capture in your photographs for this project. Please take time to study his work, notice his attention to lighting (side light, back light, soft light), the way he positions his models.
