Grand Designs Revisited: Brighton Co-Op

Sunday, 25 August 2013 FinalIn the last century, on the first ever series of Grand Designs, a younger, fresh-faced Kevin McCloud witnessed a groundbreaking co-operative of ten families build their own homes on the edge of Brighton.

'The Hedgehogs' as they were known, were made up of former travellers and those living in insecure accommodation. The council bought them land and covered the cost of construction - the deal being that in return for their labour, and lots of it, they would get to live in their self-built homes at reduced rent. Unpaid, they slogged away for over two years on this pioneering venture, based on revolutionary designs from architect Walter Segal.

Twelve years later, Kevin returns to see if the houses and the families that built them have stood the test of time, and finds himself genuinely inspired by what the project has allowed a small community to achieve.

Wednesday, 28 August 2013 Episode 3

The Chaser return to our screens to give their version of the 2013 Federal Election campaign trail with their five-part series The Hamster Decides. The series is described by Chaser member Chris Taylor as ‘an exciting new iview program, which can also be watched on older content platforms, such as ABC1 television or on LaserDisc’. It promises to concentrate its analysis on the 2013 contest, an election which The Chaser's previous election shows virtually all but ignored. The Hamster Decides will also be written, performed, directed and produced entirely by Kevin Rudd, as part of his plan to micro-manage every aspect of this election.

Catalyst: Custom Universe

Thursday, 29 August 2013

Do you have an identical twin, living in a parallel universe? Was our cosmos created by an alien teenager in his garage? Has the universe been finetuned so that intelligent beings like you and me can live in it?

This half-hour Catalyst special on the universe examines some of the Big Questions. Graham Phillips crosses the world seeking answers from several of the world's top astrophysicists. On the journey he comes across some mind-bending ideas, from monster black holes and the 'God' particle - the Higgs boson, recently discovered at the Swiss atom smasher - to the idea that we could live in a multiverse: a vast region where our universe is just one of many.

And Professor Paul Davies, physicist and author of the bestselling book The Mind of God, gives a controversial answer to whether the universe has been set up just for us.

Father Brown: The Mayor And The Magician

Saturday, 31 August 2013

Based on the short stories by G K Chesterton, Father Brown is the newest crime series on ABC1. Set in the 1950s in the heart of the beautiful English countryside, Father Brown stars Mark Williams (Harry Potter, The Indian Doctor, Doctor Who) as the Catholic priest who also happens to have a particular talent for solving crimes.

Each episode sees the enigmatic priest investigate a crime in his own particular way, using intuition and psychology. Father Brown discovers the truth of a crime by looking into the truth of the soul - the passions, dark secrets, hidden desires.

Having spent many years hearing his parishioners' confessions has given Father Brown an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. But the stories are not concerned with judgement - Father Brown is more interested in saving souls than in bringing the guilty to justice.

Full of humour and compassion, but with a big dramatic twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting while bringing a sharp contemporary edge to the storytelling.

During episode nine, The Mayor And The Magician, Father Brown deduces that the mayor, who dropped dead during his speech at the Kembleford village fete, was deliberately electrocuted.

Meanwhile, Mrs McCarthy's past comes back to haunt her.
