Introduction

“Water! You have neither taste, nor colour, nor smell. You can’t be described, we can only enjoy you, not knowing what you are. You are not only necessary for life, you are life itself. You are the most precious treasure of the world.” Antoine de Saint Exupery, The Human Planet.

The Romans used to say “Aqua omnia sunt” (The water exists everywhere).

It is true that water is one of the most common chemical fusion in nature. As rivers, lakes, seas and oceans it takes over 71% of Earth surface, it enters the composition of the tissues of plants and

animals, as well as in many minerals and rocks. In lower atmosphere layers there are 4% of water as vapor, clouds, rain, frost, hail and snow.

Water, this priceless liquid, every day reduces in quantity, due to irresponsible human activities. Indiscriminate logging of the forests, uncontrolled use of groundwater, etc. result in its reduction.

Around the world every day over 50 000 people die after use of contaminated water.

Soon rich will be those countries who have enough sources and enough quantities of clean water. Increasing needs of clean water for everyday life, for industry, and others, makes purification of water of extreme importance. It is time to purify all the contaminated water before its return to rivers, dams and seas.

Increase of humanity and its needs of water, food and industrial goods, and the reduction of natural water, make people to involve in its protection by reasonable usage, closed cycle of manufacturing, and mainly its purification.

1. What is this job?

Purification is for natural and sewage until they reach the required chemical and physical indicators to be reused in everyday life for household needs and in industry.

Purification of water can be realized in different branches of national economy, industrial plants, thermoelectric plants, water supplying and sewage systems of the cities, etc.

The water purification operator supplies the necessary quantity of quality purified water by using equipment and systems for water treatment.

The water purification operator follows instructions for the proper use of the equipment, the proper conduct and control of the water-chemical process. For this purpose the operator needs to have specific knowledge and skills.

2. Facilities and Equipment

For purification of water installations are used, including facilities located in the water flow in a certain sequence.

- Precipitator – basins or tanks, where roughly dispersed particles in the water are settled down

- Mechanical filters – basins or tanks that contain filter material

- Facilities with industrial micro sieves for filtering of natural and sewage waters.

- Coagulators – reactors where the colloidal impurities of the water are removed

- Electro-coagulators – electrical current is supplied through the treated water

- Ionic installations – consists of ion exchange columns for desalination of water

- Decarburizers - for separation of the free carbon acid

- Electro dialysers for demineralization of water; usually for purification of water of iron, manganese, etc.

- Facilities for chlorine omission through water. Drinking water in Bulgaria are chlorinated

Other equipment is also used. While working the operator wears work clothes.

3. Working place

Working place of the water purification operator depends on the performed activities. He/she works in two places:

- at the water purification installations and facilities- at the chemical laboratory for performing the necessary

chemical control
