INTRODUCTIONThe Continuous Inventory of Stand Conditions (CISC) is the computer system used by Region 8 for the timber stand examination data base. CISC is a Forest and District based system for the storage and retrieval of stand attributes, scheduled activities, and accomplished activities. The system is a component of, but does not interface with, the overall Timber Management Information System (TMIS). CISC has been designed to be responsive to the requirements of the National Forest Management Act and to facilitate the land management planning process. The system can be instrumental in Forest Plan implementation and can assist with control and monitoring of various activities.Data for the stand files result from the periodic silvicultural examinations and prescriptions and the accomplishment of timber management activities. Thus, CISC continuously reflects an up-to-date description of timber stands and also contains a history of stand treatments. CISC was originally developed during the mid-1960's and resided at the Ft. Collins Computer Center as a group of FORTRAN computer programs. In 1988, CISC was revised and placed on the Data General computers at the District and Forest levels. This version was known as CISCII (pronounced: CISC two) and utilized the INFOS II data base management system. In 1992 CISC 3.0 was released and was the first version to use the Oracle data base management system and SQL*Forms. CISC 4.0 was released in the spring of 1996 and was designed to run on the IBM RISC 6000 computers at Forest Service Regional, Forest, and District offices. CISC 4.0 used the Oracle data base management system, SQL*Forms, and additionally linked to the ArcView mapping system. This document describes CISC 4.02 which is a revision to CISC 4.0 which handles the changes to the IBM RISC 6000 computers due to the Build2 update.In order for CISC to function properly, Forests will identify a system coordinator and a system administrator with the following duties and responsibilities. Forests may adjust the responsibilities of the positions to meet specific requirements provided all essential duties are assigned.

Forest CISC Coordinator 1. Serves as the Forest expert on the CISC System, including data entry, data

updating, and report generation. 2. Provides instructions to Districts on maintaining system lookup tables and

provides local coding convention when needed. 3. Provides training and assistance to Forest and District users. Resolves system

problems whenever possible. 4. Ensures system data are current and accurate. 5. Ensures Forest CISC data base is periodically updated from District data base. 6. Reports system problems and needed assistance to Natural Resources Team,

Regional Office.

Forest CISC Administrator 1. Installs and maintains CISC programs and tables on Forest and District

computers. 2. Provides adequate backups for each data base. 3. Provides advice to Forest System Coordinator concerning major problems in using

the SQL*Plus reporting system. 4. Periodically updates Forest CISC data base from District data base. 5. Reports system problems and needed assistance to Natural Resources Team,

Regional Office.

CISC Data Base SystemThe CISC system is a series of Oracle FORMS, FORTRAN programs, and SQL*Plus reports that use the Oracle Relational Data Base Access Method. The system is designed to reside on the IBM RISC 6000 hardware at each Ranger District and each Forest Supervisor's Office. District files are periodically transferred to maintain a current Forest file at the Supervisor's Office level.The system is menu driven and forms are provided for ease in data entry. The data entry/edit program automatically checks for errors as data are entered and immediately notifies the user when data are invalid. Thus, invalid data are prevented from ever entering the data base. Reports can be generated by menu or by using customized SQL*Plus queries.The District is entirely responsible for all additions and updates to the data base. The Forest is responsible for periodically transferring the District data base to the Forest data base. The transfer should be accomplished at least quarterly. The Forest is responsible for providing assistance and training to District personnel, for maintaining the Forest data base, and for keeping Districts advised as to current contents of the lookup tables.

How To Run CISCTo run CISC you will navigate to the CISC Directory and select an icon. The CISC Directory holds icons for:

Starting ArcView, Updating CISC data with Oracle Forms, and Running the CISC Standard Reports.

Navigate to the CISC Directory:(If you are not yet familiar with IBM computer procedures you may wish to enlist the aid of your Computer Specialist for help with this Initial Startup section)

1. Locate the Front Panel on your Desktop. (Figure 1)2. Raise the File Operations menu by clicking the small triangle above the File

Folder icon. (This icon is the third from the left on my Front Panel but may be in a different position on your Front Panel).

3. Click on the Home Folder option. (Note: in this discussion the terms Folder and Directory are synonyms)

Figure 2 shows one person's Home directory. Your Home directory may look a little different.

1. Click on the line that shows your Home directory's path name. In this example the line is: /fsfiles/unit/is/home/dbelcher.

2. When this line changes color delete it with your Backspace key or the Delete key.

3. Type in the path name of the CISC Directory: /fsapps/fsprod/cisc and press the Enter key. The CISC Directory will appear.

To run the Update Forms double-click on the cisc_forms icon. To run the Standard CISC Reports double-click on the cisc_reports icon.

The Programs Folder holds all the components of the CISC program. Please do not modify or delete the contents of the Programs Folder.

ArcView Access:To run ArcView double-click on the cisc_arcview icon (Figure 4).

Clicking the cisc_arcview icon brings up the Project Selection window (Figure 5). To create a new ArcView project leave the Options: and Arguments: fields

blank. This will allow ArcView to start with a default project (named: cisc.apr) that has built-in connections to your local GIS coverages and has built-in connections to the CISC Oracle data.

To open an existing project (one that you have already been working on) type the project's path and file name in the Arguments: field. Leave the Options: field blank.

If your ArcView project is filed in your own personal Home directory you can use the shortcut form shown here in Figure 5. The tilde and slash (~/) tell the computer to look in your Home Directory for the file Lower40.apr. Of course you can use full pathnames, e.g.,

/fsfiles/unit/is/home/dbelcher/Lower40.apr or /fsfiles/unit/timber/pbunyon/Lower40.apr or whatever pathname and filename is appropriate.

Note that upper and lower case is important when typing pathnames and filenames -- lower40.apr is not the same project as Lower40.apr. Project names are assigned by using the ArcView Save As menu option (discussed later).

Clicking the OK button brings up a warning screen (Figure 6) that requests that you do not remove this window until ArcView finishes. You may want to minimize this window to clear up some desktop space - just don't close it until you are done with this ArcView session.

After some time the ArcView logo will appear and a new window (Figure 7) will ask you to log into Oracle. To use your standard Oracle login type a slash (/) and click the OK button. (Note: the Enter key does not work here - you must use the OK button)

Now ArcView will do a lot of behind-the-scenes startup work. It will make the connection with Oracle, access and display your project's GIS coverages, and then join the CISC data from Oracle tables with the GIS Coverages. Warning - this may take many minutes! Take this opportunity to open other windows on your desktop to do other activities, check your mail, go for coffee break, or meditate on all the technological advances we have available for us today.

Eventually you will be rewarded with an ArcView screen (Figure 8).

Figure 8: An ArcView screenAt this point you are on your own for using ArcView to analyze your data and produce mapping products. This CISC Users' Guide will not attempt to teach you how to use ArcView - there are many good books and classes available. Contact your Forest GIS person for assistance.However, there are a few enhancements to the standard ArcView project that we will discuss here. The default ArcView project (see discussion of cisc.apr at Figure 5 above) has made CISC's Oracle data available and has associated it with your stand polygons.You can view CISC data by opening the table: Ciscdata. You can manipulate this table with any of the standard ArcView commands to reorder, summarize, modify, and display the data. Be aware, however, that any changes made to this view of CISC data are local, only. The changes are not reflected in the Oracle Tables. But there is a way to make changes to the real CISC data....When the VIEW window is active the button bar is visible (Figure 9).

The two rightmost buttons were specially written to access CISC data. Here's how you edit data for a stand that already has data in it:

1. Make sure that the Stands Theme is the active theme (see note below),

2. Click the button to "Edit Existing Stand Using Oracle Form",3. Click on a single stand. This puts you into the regular CISC Update screens

(see Figure 18) for editing the selected stand's data. Proceed with whatever data changes are appropriate.

4. When you finish editing this one stand and exit the CISC Update Screen you will be returned to the ArcView screen where you can choose another stand to edit.

Sometimes you may have new stands delineated as polygons but there are no

corresponding data in the CISC database. When you click on the button to "Edit New Stand Using Oracle Form" (Figure 9) you will see the regular CISC update screens and can use them for entering data into the CISC database.The difference in the two buttons is that the "Edit New Stand" button will, behind the scenes, create CISC's Stand_ID and USTAND fields and the "Edit Existing Stand" button will not.Note: if you don't have the Stands Theme as the active theme when you click either of these two buttons you will get an error message similar to this:

Leaving ArcViewRemember to save your Project when you leave ArcView. If you started with the CISC default project (cisc.apr) and have made changes to it you will not be able to save it as cisc.apr (that file is write-protected). You can, however, save it with a new name. Click the Project Window (Figure 12) to make it active then click the File Menu to see the Save Project As... option

Clicking the Save Project As... option displays the Save Project As window (Figure 13) where you can specify a new pathname and filename.

After completely exiting ArcView you may close the ArcView wakeup window (Figure 6). That's all for running CISC's ArcView interface.

Forms Access:In some cases, especially when updating many stands, you will want to bypass the ArcView interface and use the CISC Update screens directly. Here's how:Navigate to the CISC directory (see figure 1). Click on the cisc_forms icon (Figure 14). When you start CISC this way you will begin with the CISC Main Menu (Figure 17).

All further CISC activities can be reached from this screen.Perform CISC Updates - Allows access to screens to update existing stand data, to add new stand data, or to delete existing stand data. See Figure 18.Print Standard CISC Reports - Displays a list of the Standard CISC reports that show work scheduling and other summaries. See Figure 23.Change CISC Lookup Tables - Allows access to the tables that contain valid CISC codes which are used by CISC to edit for errors as data are entered. Any user with "write" access to the data base may update the tables. See Figure 27.

Perform District UpdatesSelecting the Perform CISC Updates Option from the CISC Main Menu (Figure 17) displays the CISC Stand Selection Screen. From here you can select a stand to work on then update existing stand data, delete stands, or create new stands.

Stand Selection ScreenThis screen allows you to select the stand that will be updated, added, deleted, or duplicated. If you enter this screen from ArcView access the District, Compartment, and Stand numbers for the stand you clicked on the ArcView map will be automatically selected. Otherwise you can type the numbers directly into the boxes. Note that some data entry boxs have a List Of Values (LOV) button. Clicking the Districts LOV button will show a list of all Districts which have data available to CISC on your computer. Clicking the Compartments LOV will display a list of all Compartments in the selected District. Clicking on the Stands LOV will display a list of all stands in the selected Compartment.

Figure 18: CISC Stand Selection ScreenIf you are using ArcView access and the numbers for District, Compartment, and Stand are not right for the stand you wish to edit you can either return to ArcView (press the Return to CISC Main Menu (Exit) button) and click on another stand or you can change the stand number to be the one you wish to edit.After selecting District, Compartment, and Stand numbers you can proceed on to one of the remaining options:

EDIT This Stand's Data - This option takes you to the Timber Data Screen (Figure 20) and displays the current CISC data for the selected District, Compartment, and Stand.ADD a New Stand - This option allows a new stand to be created with the selected District, Compartment, and Stand numbers. When the new stand is created you will see the Timber Data Screen (Figure 20) with all fields empty and ready for entry of the new stand's data. If a stand with these numbers already exists you will not be able to create a new one. Note that the total acres figure shown for this Compartment in the Compartments Lookup Table is not changed by this action. You will have to make that adjustment separately. DELETE This Stand - This option allows you to delete a stand. Only one stand at a time may be deleted and it will be the stand with the selected District, Compartment, and Stand numbers. Note that the total acres figure shown for this Compartment in the Compartments Lookup Table is not changed by this action. You will have to make that adjustment separately. Note also that this action deletes a stand from the CISC database but does not alter the ArcView coverage in any way. To remove a stand from the ArcView coverage contact your GIS person. To delete whole compartments from the CISC database use SQL*Plus operations. DUPLICATE This Stand - This option allows a new stand to be created as an exact copy of the selected Stand (except for the internal Stand_ID). To perform this action select the stand to be duplicated by filling in the boxes on the Stand Selection Screen (Figure 18). When you click the DUPLICATE This Stand button you will see the Copy Stand screen (Figure 19). Type in the new stand number and, optionally, a new District or Compartment number. If a stand with these numbers already exists you will not be able to create a new one. When duplicating a stand you can designate that it be created in a Compartment other than the one that it is currently in. The Compartment that you duplicate the stand INTO must already exist - you cannot create a NEW Compartment this way. To create a new Compartment - one that does not currently exist in CISC - go to the Compartments Lookup Menu and make a new Compartment there.When the new stand is created you will see the Timber Data Screen (Figure 19) with all fields filled with the original stand's data. Note that the stand number shown on the top of the Timber Data Screen is the new stand number. You can now update any of the new stand's data. Note that the total acres figure shown for this Compartment in the Compartments Lookup Table is not changed by this action. You will have to make that adjustment separately.

Timber Data ScreenData on this screen describe the timber component of the stand. Most fields have an associated List Of Values (LOV) button which displays the list of valid values for the field. These values are discussed in the Data Definitions section of this User's Guide.

Treatments ScreenThis screen allows you to enter and schedule various cultural treatments and to show accomplishments. Treatments are entered by cultural treatment code and the name is displayed automatically by the system. The system also automatically enters the treatment acres from the stand acres on the Timber Data Screen. If the treatment will be applied to less than the total stand, the treatment acres should be changed to reflect net treatment acres. After treatments have been accomplished, the accomplishment month and year should be entered. The month is entered as a 1- or 2-digit number by calendar month, i.e., 5 for May or 12 for December. The year is a 4-digit field and represents the fiscal year. Do not delete the treatment record. By maintaining accomplishment data, a stand history will be available.

Miscellaneous Data Screen The CISC database also contains information on resources other than the timber component of the stand. This miscellaneous data is divided into three parts: planning and recreation data, wildlife data, and Forest local use data.

Print District ReportsStandard Reports from MenuThe CISC Reporting System is started by selecting the Print Standard CISC Reports button from the CISC's Main Menu (Figure 17). A variety of standard reports is available to provide current information about the inplace data of the timber resource and about the scheduling of treatments. Further information is requested by each report (e.g., District number, compartment numbers, destination of output, etc.). These reports list or summarize data that are most useful to timber management and are required on a recurring basis. Results from the Reports will be displayed in the Applix word processor where you can reformat if necessary and print as desired using standard Applix procedures. Displaying the reports formatted as: Landscape, Courier, 8 pt. seems to work best for full page output. Other reporting needs that are required on a less frequent basis may be satisfied with a customized report generated from the CISC system by using Oracle's SQL*Plus program. Examples of the standard reports are shown in Appendix B.

Details of CISC Standard Reports:AGECL - Age Class Distribution. This report displays acres by age class for either suitable lands or all forested lands. The report is further broken down by either management type or forest type. The year for age computations is user selected.AREA - Area Under Forest Service Administration. This report is a summary by district of total acres in each land class as of the current fiscal year.CMPTAC - Compartment Acres. This report is a listing of the area classification summary of each compartment on the district.COND - Stand Condition Class By Forest Type. This report summarizes all suitable forest land acres for each forest type by stand condition class.COUNTY - Area By County And Land Class. This report displays acres by county and by land suitability classification.ERR - CISC Error Listing. This report checks existing data against the lookup tables to verify valid codes. For fields without lookup tables some range checking is done. Where appropriate, comparisons are made for consistency between fields. Create Custom ReportsCustomized reports can be designed and produced from the CISC database by using the SQL*Plus reporting system.

1. Locate the Front Panel on your Desktop. (Figure 26)2. Raise the Database Applications menu by clicking the small triangle above the

SQL+ icon. (This icon is the third from the right on my Front Panel but may be in a different position on your Front Panel).

3. Click on the SQL Plus option.

This will start SQL*Plus and the SQL*Plus prompt will appear on the screen. You will be logged into SQL*Plus with your default Oracle User ID, i.e., OPS$DBELCHER. Follow instructions in the SQL*Plus manuals or in a tutorial available from the Region 8 Natural Resources Team (Bruce Baldwin) to produce reports from CISC data.When producing reports you will have to specify Table or View names from which the data will be retrieved. Most of the reports will come from the CISCDATA View. This View and other useful tables are defined in the section titled: CISC Tables and Columns/Definitions

An alternate method of producing custom reports is to use the Applix Word Processor. The steps consist of: start the Applix Word Processor, compose a SQL*Plus query within Applix, run the query to retrieve CISC data, format the results of the retrieval using regular Applix techniques, and print. Lookup Tables MenusMany of the fields used on the Tally Sheets and on the CISC Update screens have a list of valid values which can be manipulated through the CISC Lookup Tables. When codes are entered for these fields CISC verifies that the code is on the list. If not, the code is rejected and CISC waits for a correct code. Similar screens are available for other fields.Change A Field - To change a field use the mouse, the arrow keys, or the Enter key to move the cursor to the field to be changed, erase the old value, then type the new value. UP and DOWN arrows - This key moves the cursor to the field immediately above or below the current field. When moving down from the last line in the list, a new blank line is created to accept new codes.Create Record - To insert a new, blank line which can hold a new code select the Record menu item from the top line of the screen then select Insert. Lines can be inserted at any place within the lookup table and the lines will be sorted in correct order the next time the table appears.Delete Record - To delete the whole line that the cursor is on select the Record menu item from the top line of the screen then select Delete.

Transfer District Data to SOGet Data From District Program(Note: These procedures may change as we become more proficient with IBM techniques)The Forest is responsible for periodically transferring the District data base into the Forest computer. The transfer should be accomplished at least quarterly. The procedure is: 1. The Forest CISC Administrator requests an Oracle User ID and Password from the

District. This lets the District know that the Forest is initiating the transfer procedure and gives the District an opportunity to request a delay if necessary.

2. The Forest CISC Administrator runs the get_data_from_district Program (see below) to delete all CISC stand information in the SO data base for the District being copied and then replace it with the corresponding stand information from the District. A report is printed automatically on the main printer.

3. The Forest CISC Administrator runs the CISC Error Report (ERR) from the CISC Main Menu to check for data inconsistencies.

4. The Forest CISC Administrator notifies the District that the transfer is complete.The get_data_from_district program deletes all resource data in the Forest database for a single district and then copies the stand information (resource Tables) from District to Forest database. The get_data_from_district program does not copy District lookup tables, it copies the stand IDs, measurements, and attributes. The program copies data from the CISC Resource Tables:

STANDS, CISC_LOCAL_USE, STAND_TREATMENTS, CISC_WILD, CISC_MISC, STAND_ID_LIST, COMPARTMENTS

The get_data_from_district program should be run at the SO ONLY - never at the District. Running this program at the District will delete all of the District's CISC data - an action that you probably do not want to do.Note - due to exceptional circumstances, it may sometimes be necessary to rebuild a District CISC database from the one stored at the SO. Contact the Regional Office, Natural Resources Team, for modifications to the data transfer program so that District data can be moved from the SO to the District.Details and procedures for running the get_data_from_district program are included in the CISC System Administration Guide.

DATA DEFINITIONSData needed for silvicultural prescriptions include information required to: 1) accurately describe silvical attributes of the stand, 2) design timber sale projects, 3) prescribe silvicultural treatments, and 4) describe other resource data as appropriate to identify coordination and enhancement opportunities and potential mitigating treatments. Field data collection is recorded on form R8-2400-48 as shown in Figures 29 and 30. This form is also known as the "STAND TALLY SHEET" or the "48". The summarized stand data are entered into the Continuous Inventory of Stand Conditions (CISC) data base through the Timber Data Screen, the Treatments Screen, and the Miscellaneous Data Screen, hereafter referred to as the "DATA ENTRY SCREENS". A variety of reports is available to extract and summarize the CISC data. This chapter provides data field names, definitions, and field location on the Stand Tally Sheet and the Data Entry Screens. Data stratification and associated codes are also presented here.

Data On Stand Tally Sheet: R8-2400-48The STAND TALLY SHEET (Figures 29 and 30) is used to record data observed at sample points throughout the stand. Codes are written on the form by hand while the prescriber is at the prescription area. When completed, the stand tally sheets for all stands are filed for future reference and review in the compartment folder at the District Office. The stand tally sheet is divided into 5 major components.Location. The first component consists of 3 fields to define a geographical location (compartment and stand numbers) and date.Point Sample Data. The second major component (the main body of the form) organizes information at each sample point. This information consists of tree measurements and professional judgement of stand conditions.Stand-Wide Data. The third major component provides for recording summarized stand data and remarks, average stand DBH, site quality, stand age, and identity of the individual collecting the data.After the last sample point is taken, and before the prescriber leaves the stand, data collected at the sample points will be summarized to obtain the stand-wide attributes. It is this information that is entered into CISC by way of the CISC data entry screens. This summary is not merely a totaling of sample point data but will be supplemented by prescriber observations between sample points. Much valuable information can be gained while walking through the stand and should not be omitted when describing the stand. In some cases where only a few plots are taken, the observed information may more accurately describe the stand than the plot data.Travel Route. The fourth major component (on the reverse of the stand tally sheet) provides space to document the route of travel while examining the stand. Space is provided on the reverse side of the stand tally sheet for documenting details of sample design. The certified silviculturist, or a designatee, will define the areas to be examined and the intensity of examination. Sample points should be separated by at least 2 chains. The silviculturist may design the complete inventory, or, in the case of an experienced prescriber, rely on the prescriber for sample design. Fields are provided for documenting travel both within a stand and from stand to stand when foot travel following a compass line is necessary.

Data On CISC Data Entry ScreensDefinitions and codes for each field appearing on the Stand Tally Sheet and on the Data Entry Screens are listed alphabetically in this section.Acres: Timber Data Screen. The total National Forest area (in acres) within the stand boundary. This field includes the acreage in inclusions. If the number is 1000 acres or more do not use commas.Age: Timber Data Screen. Age is the number of years since stand establishment. This field is computed by CISC from the current year (automatically obtained from the computer) and the Age Year. Age is not entered nor stored in the data base.Age Year: Stand Tally Sheet. Timber Data Screen. Age Year is the calendar year of stand origin and is determined by subtracting the current stand age from the current year. It is recorded as a four digit year for all stands except those in the process of regeneration and non-stocked stands for which the Age Year is recorded as blank. Age Year for stands managed with group or individual tree selection will be the year of stand establishment for the oldest age class in the stand.The tree, or trees, checked to determine a stand's Age Year should be representative of the prevailing situation in the stand. The tree may or may not be the same tree used for site index classification. Age Year should not be rounded to the nearest 5 years as in site index determination. point. Region 8 uses the variable plot point-sample system (prism sampling) where each tallied tree represents the basal area per acre equal to the prism factor. Region 8 usually uses a 10 basal area factor prism and each tallied tree represents 10 square feet of basal area per acre.Each tallied tree is relegated to a species group (pine or hardwood) and a product (poletimber or sawtimber) as appropriate. On the Stand Tally Sheet trees are further stratified by CUT or LEAVE category and recorded by dot tally. Each Ranger District and Supervisor's Office will maintain a copy of the administrative map displaying compartment boundaries and associated compartment numbers.Compartments are represented by a six-digit numerical code. Hardwood-Pine Types: Stands in which 51-69 percent of the basal area of trees with dominant and co-dominant crowns are hardwoods. Use the type name associated with the hardwood species comprising the plurality.

Hardwood Types: Stands in which 70 percent or more of the basal area of trees with dominant and co-dominant crowns are hardwoods. Use the type name associated with the hardwood species comprising the plurality.

The SAF cover type classification requires a stand to exceed 80 percent in one species to be considered pure as opposed to the 70 percent threshold used in the Region 8 classification.The SAF cover type classification considers all mixtures of pine and hardwood that have less than 80 percent stocking of one species group as pine hardwood types. The Region 8 approach divides the group into Pine-Hardwood and Hardwood-Pine.

The percentage of softwood and hardwood in the Region 8 classification applies to the particular mixture of trees at any single sample point. This is not the same as, and should not be confused with intermingling of less-than-stand size areas of pine type in a hardwood stand or of a hardwood type in a pine stand. These less-than-stand-size areas should be treated as pine inclusions in hardwood stands or hardwood inclusions in pine stands. In heterogenous areas with neither type being of stand size, forest type should be assigned on the basis of the type occupying the plurality of the area. Such situations should not be assigned a pine-hardwood or hardwood-pine forest type unless individual plot classifications for a plurality of the area are a mixed type.Forest type codes are also utilized to identify management type. Acceptability of a forest type as a management type is by the footnoting convention presented in the Management Type section. Stands with similar management objectives and a common management prescription are designated as Forest Plan Management Areas and are the basis for implementing the Land Management Plan. Recording the management area for each stand is essential for successful implementation and monitoring of the Plan.The three-digit field may be 1 to 3 characters or numerical digits. These same criteria also apply to all other areas unless the Forest Plan requires occupying the site with another, less productive forest type, to meet some other resource goal or objective.Use the appropriate forest type code to represent management type. Acceptability as a management type is described using the footnoting in the forest type codes section to link to the following codes: Code Management Type Acceptability No Footnote Unacceptable as a management type 1 Acceptable as a management type 2 Acceptable as a management type when approved by the

Regional Forester through the land management planning process.

Method of cut is the cultural treatment harvest method deemed most appropriate by the prescriber for this stand (see Cultural Treatment). It is usually based on silvicultural treatments that are appropriate for the stand condition class and that will be accomplished through commercial timber sales.

Immature stands are eligible for an intermediate cut and stands qualifying for regeneration are eligible for a regeneration cut. Exceptions are (1) immature stands that have been selected for regeneration by the 10-year stand selection, candidate stand process and the Forest Plan allocation (FORPLAN) and, (2) stands that qualify for regeneration but are not scheduled for regeneration during the current Plan analysis period. The latter situation may require an intermediate cut to salvage potential losses or to provide growing space. Care must be taken not to remove growing stock.A cutting method is prescribed when there is sufficient timber volume requiring removal for silvicultural reasons and when that cut meets the Forest's standard for operability. It is possible for a stand to have an operable cut under an acceptable cutting method and yet not be saleable. Hardwood poletimber thinnings are an example, but as long as there is sufficient volume to meet the operability standards, a thinning would be prescribed.Acceptable cutting methods are defined and described in FSH 2471.1 R8.Month/Year Accomplished: Treatments Screen. The calendar month and fiscal year that the treatment is accomplished. Record as a two digit month and a four digit year.Month/Year Scheduled: Treatments Screen. The calendar month and fiscal year that the treatment is scheduled to occur. Record as a two digit month and a four digit year.Point #: Stand Tally Sheet. The point number is a sequential numeric identifier for the place in a stand where measurements were made. It is pre-printed on the stand tally sheet. It is not used on the data entry screens.Previous Forest Type: Timber Data Screen. The forest type of the stand before the stand's most recent regeneration. Use the codes listed in the FOREST TYPE section.Prescriber: Stand Tally Sheet. Stand examinations are conducted by or supervised by a certified silviculturist. However, the actual data gathering may or may not be accomplished by the silviculturist. The prescriber's name will be printed in the appropriate blank. The prescriber's name is not entered into the CISC database.Productivity: Timber Data Screen. Productivity is an indicator of the mean annual increment of stand growth. It is a code representing the number of board feet per acre or cubic feet per acre that the stand is expected to grow per year. Productivity is based on the management type, management type site index, and the geographical location of the stand (i.e., mountains, flatwoods, or bottomlands). This code is computed by CISC. Identifies the presence or absence of seedlings and/or saplings of species representative of the management type that would be considered acceptable growing stock if the overstory were removed. To be considered acceptable the reproduction should be capable of developing into dominants or co-dominants in the new stand. The classification is based on a 1/100-acre plot centered at the point sample plot center. Site Index: Stand Tally Sheet. Timber Data Screen. Site index is a measure of site quality based on the height of the dominant trees in a stand at an arbitrarily chosen base age. In Region 8 the base age is 50 years. Site index is recorded for both the forest type and the management type. Site index is recorded in classes based on 10-foot intervals. For example, site index 60 includes all trees between 55 and 64 feet tall at age 50.To determine site index from the site index tables in the FIELD BOOK, round the site index tree age to the nearest 5 years (e.g., age 47 is rounded to 45 and age 48 is rounded to 50). When the rounded age has been determined, read the table horizontally to find the largest indicated height that does not exceed the measured height of the selected tree. The site index value at the top of that column is the indicated site index based on the selected tree. Forests may substitute, after Regional approval, other site index tables that more accurately reflect local conditions by supplementing this handbook. The code for site index is a 3-digit code (i.e., a site index of 110 feet is recorded as 110).The tree chosen for measuring site index should be of the species representing the plurality of the forest type or management type. Several well dispersed trees may need to be examined within the stand to get a good estimate of site index. Species site index tables are included in the FIELD BOOK for all types except the various combinations of upland hardwood. Northern Red Oak, followed by Black Oak and Chestnut Oak, are the preferred species for site determination for all upland and cove hardwood types except

Scarlet Oak may be used for site determination if there are no other suitable site trees available.The age of the site tree is the age, from seed, of the tree being measured. To determine age from seed, measure age at DBH and add: 5 years for hardwoods, 7 years for longleaf pine, or 4 years for all other pines.

Select trees for site index determination as close to age 50 as possible. Trees younger than 30 years or older than 70 years tend to give inaccurate readings of site index.Height is total height from ground level on the uphill side to tip of the main leader. Height must be measured with an Abney level, clinometer, etc., and at a measured horizontal distance from the tree. Logger tapes must be used to accurately measure distance from the tree.Trees used for site index determination should be dominant, preferably the tallest of several dominants, show no signs of damage to the main stem, and should have been dominant throughout their life. Omit trees which show signs of suppression such as narrow growth rings at the center and/or nearby stumps of such size and location as to have supported trees that would have suppressed the selected tree. In addition the selected trees should be on a location that is typical of the stand to avoid any micro-site influences.Site index is a three-digit numeric value rounded to the nearest 10 feet.Stand Acres: See ACRES.Stand Treatment Code: CISC Lookup Table Menu. See CULTURAL TREATMENT.Soil Type: Miscellaneous Data Screen. Soil EMU is a grouping of one or more soil series that have similar characteristics such as texture, structure, or water retention capacity. Forests not using EMUs may record soil map units with soil series. The dominant or most critical EMU or soil map unit symbol should be recorded. The codes can be changed using the CISC Lookup Table Menu under Forest direction. Each Forest will supplement this section to provide guidance on use of this field.The soil type code can be 1 to 6 characters or numeric digits. Stand Average DBH: Stand Tally Sheet. Average diameter at breast height (DBH) of the trees counted for basal area stratified by species group (pine or hardwood) and product (poletimber or sawtimber) as appropriate. Before leaving the stand the prescriber records the DBH for each stratum. DBH is recorded to the nearest inch. It is recorded on the stand tally sheet based upon either ocular or recorded estimates made during the prescriber's travel through the stand. This code is a two-digit numeric value rounded to the nearest inch. See also DIAMETER.Stand Condition Class: Stand Tally Sheet. Timber Data Screen. A classification of the woody growth occupying the stand that incorporates a broad evaluation of: (1) the adequacy of stocking, (2) size of material, (3) thrift, (4) age, (5) and success in meeting planned product objectives. The detailed definition, description, and discussion of Stand Condition Classes are in FSH 2471.1 R8 Silvicultural Practices Handbook. A stand can

Once selection cutting has been initiated the appropriate code, 16 or 17, will be used.The stand condition classes are listed in priority for regeneration. Consider this as the second order in an hierarchal scheme with the priority given in the Forest Plan having the first order of consideration. The objective is to implement the Forest Plan. The priority given in the Plan shall be the first to consider in meeting the Forest Plan objective. However, it may not be the best way because of conflicts with standards and guidelines. The priority of the condition class provides a second order of consideration when the first hierarchal order is not desirable. Stand Number: Stand Tally Sheet. Timber Data Screen. Stand number is the identifier associated with a specific contiguous land area known as a stand. A stand is a community of trees possessing sufficient uniformity in composition, constitution, age, spatial arrangement or condition, to be distinguishable from adjacent communities, so forming a silvicultural or management entity. For timber management purposes in Region 8, minimum stand size will be 10 acres. Areas less than 10 acres should be treated as inclusions in the surrounding or adjacent stand size area. Extensive heterogenous areas each of less than 10 acres may be lumped together to form one stand with the silvicultural description based on the prevailing condition. Areas less than

For timber management, minimum stand width will be 330 feet (5 chains).Stand number is assigned by the prescriptionist with the intention that the number assigned to a newly-regenerated stand should be retained throughout the life of the stand. Existing stand numbers should be retained in all cases unless a large stand is being broken into smaller stands or several small areas previously identified as stands are being merged and carried as one stand.Stand number is a 1 to 4 digit numeric field.

Stand Origin: Timber Data Screen. Stand origin is an indicator of the regeneration method of the current stand. It is a one digit character field. Code Stand Origin N The stand is of natural origin P The stand is a plantation.

Treatment Acres: Treatments Screen. The number of acres in the stand which receive a cultural treatment. If the entire stand is to be treated, this field will match the ACRES field on Timber Data Screen. However, if the stand is to be split or there are significant areas within the stand which will not be treated then the treatment acres will be less than the total stand size. Forest Plan standards on stand size apply to net treatment acres. This number is rounded to the nearest acre.Treatment Code: Treatments Screen. See CULTURAL TREATMENT.Treatment Name: Treatments Screen. This field is automatically entered by CISC when the Cultural Treatment Code is entered.Understory: Stand Tally Sheet. document,7. On this screen's menu click: Execute --> Execute SQL8. After the data shows up click: File --> Paste Into Spreadsheet (This creates a
