EALD Seminar 'Differentiating for EAL/D learners - theory and practice' Purpose This PD session will provide English teachers with the opportunity to explore ways to make their everyday lessons accessible to EAL/D learners. These learners are learning curriculum concepts, skills and processes, across the interrelated strands of language, literature and literacy in English (ACARA, 2015. v.8.1). For some students undertaking this work, Standard Australian English is their second or sometimes third language. Students are also all at different stages along the language development continuum. Outline This PD program covers the following: What makes a difference to my learning ? - perspectives from EAL/D learners themselves; Principles for making the curriculum accessible to EAL/D learners - differentiating content, process, and product/output; Practical strategies for working with EAL/D learners in the English classroom; Real world examples of how one teacher applied these principles and strategies to her English planning and teaching; Exploring how to apply these ideas to your own English lessons/unit plans, and sharing these ideas with colleagues. Outline

This PD program covers the following: What makes a difference to my learning? - perspectives from EAL/D learners themselves;

rsDr Jennifer Alford was a high school English, Humanities and ESL teacher in a past life and taught in FNQ and SE Qld high schools over 12 years. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at QUT and teaches in language and literacy units with a special focus on EAL/D learners. Since 2010, she has spent time researching the ever changing English curriculum landscape and ESL teachers’ classroom practice as they respond to these changes. She is on the

review board of the AATE journal English in Australia and regularly runs PD about EAL/D learners with teachers.

Dr Margaret Kettle is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at QUT and lectures on the Master of Education TESOL and the Professional Doctorate (EdD) program. Dr Kettle works with students from all over the world in both teaching and supervisory capacities and regularly conducts professional development with teachers in areas related to second language teaching and learning. She is currently leading a research project on factors influencing EAL

student academic achievement in Queensland schools.

Gae Nastasi has been a secondary EAL/D teacher in Queensland since 1982. In addition to teaching EAL/D in Queensland, she has also taught English as a Foreign Language to teenagers and adults overseas. She is currently Head of Special Education Services at the EAL/D Unit based at MacGregor State High School in Brisbane.
