Dear Pastors, Ministers and Clergy:
With a great deal of personal excitement and anticipated joy, I am extremely pleased to announce and
endorse the publication of The Metropolitan Atlanta Church Guide. This brand new quarterly publica-
tion will highlight the many outstanding achievements of pastors, church officers, lay leaders, and other
church associates within metropolitan Atlanta black churches. Through targeted distribution of its
printed guide and a powerful, but innovative and interactive online guide, the publication will present
a new and different way of introducing and sharing the achievements associated with your church and
ministries to all of metro Atlanta.
Throughout our history, the black church and the pastors of these churches have never received the ac-
colades and honors from the mainstream media and publishing world for what the black church has
done to define African American culture. Awards are constantly given that glorifies all varieties of
lifestyles and personalities. However, it is difficult to find in a single publication that focuses specifically
on the black church and the leadership contributions of its pastors and within the membership.
The publishers of this wonderful new guide are faithful members of the Antioch Baptist Church North
where they have added tremendous leadership to the ongoing growth and vitality of our congregational
family during the past 12 years. I have been amazed by their deep passion for ministry and for spreading
the gospel of Jesus Christ. As publishers, they are innovative communicators of God’s truths and have
a keen understanding of our culture as a people. The craftsmanship of this guide will be refreshing and
balanced with a focus on pastors, ministers, clergy and members within the black church regardless of
the size of the membership.
To my knowledge, there is no other similar publication that has built its foundation on a ministry such
as this. Therefore, it gives me immense personal satisfaction to recommend this publication to you and
to the members of your church.
Yours in God’s service,

We are continuing a series of ser-
mons which we are calling FAMILY
SECRETS. What are the secrets of
building strong Christian families?
We are looking for both principles
and examples to help us as we seek
to build better families. Today we
focus on the real heart of what it
means to be part of the family of
Christ.
"Johnny," said a teacher to one of her
young pupils, "do you think you
could explain to the class the differ-
ence between 'like' and 'love'?"
"Well," said Johnny, "I like my par-
ents . . . but I love Milk Duds."
Well, we who are parents can only
hope that we are at least as important
to our children as Milk Duds.
I must tell you, though, that one
Mom had a most revealing experi-
ence on her birthday. Her two chil-
dren ordered her to stay in bed. She
lay there looking forward to being
brought her breakfast, as the inviting
smell of bacon floated up from the
kitchen. At last the children called
her downstairs. She found them sit-
ting at the table, each with a large
plate of bacon and eggs. "As a birth-
day surprise," one explained, "We've
cooked our own breakfast." (1)
That says bundles, doesn't it? Who in
this world does more for us than our
Mom? And who is taken for granted
more than our Mom?
Our text for the day could easily be
about being a good mother or a good
father, but actually it is aimed at the
whole Christian family. Jesus is look-
ing to the cross. There he will glorify
God by his perfect obedience to
God's plan. Now he is calling his dis-
ciples to perfect obedience as well.
