for students. First who is EV Academy? EV ACADEMY is a leading

English Language Institute based in Cebu (Philippines) since 2004

4. Accreditations

「バギオ」は海抜

1600mの高地に位置する、ル

ソン島北部を代表する人口

2 6万人ほどの中心都市で

す。首都マニラからはバス

で6～8時間ほど北上した山

間の高地に位置し、年間平

均気温は20℃、最高気温も

2 6℃ほどの爽やかな気候

で、美しい松林に囲まれた

避暑地であると同時に、絶好の留学地ともなっていま

す。3月から5月にかけて大

統領府などの政府関連機関

がこぞって移転してくるこ

とから、バギオは「Summer

Capital」との愛称を持って

おり、その他大統領別荘や

陸軍士官学校など多くの公

的機関があるため、治安の

安定した、留学生にとっても安心のできる街です。

バギオは山間の高地

に位置するため、アップダ

ウンの激しい街です。その

ため、フィリピンの他の都

市では一般的な交通手段で

あるトライシクルは走って

おらず、留学生の交通手段

としては、タクシーとジプ

ニーが中心になります。バギオの中心には

「バーンハム公園」という

緑溢れる大きな公園があ

り、自転車をレンタルして

公園内をサイクリングした

り、公園中央にある池で

A high satisfaction rate means that a school is

capable of dealing with students who have

different academic and personal needs. Students

come here to learn English that is why an effective

and organized curriculum is important, and if the

school has good facilities this will help them focus

on their studies and not worry about their living

condition. In addition, a great number of students

need a self-study room for privacy when studying

because they share bedrooms with other students.

Lastly, I have to know if the atmosphere of the

school to match them with my client’s study

purpose. If they want strict and rigorous training

they should attend a Sparta school, or if they want

a school with a more relaxed or homey feel then

there are other schools for that as well. I check all

of these when I visit a school, so I can carefully lookfor the most suitable school for my clients because

each of them has different needs or purpose, even

if they come as a group. In my experience,

students are satisfied if they have a successful

learning experience, and make friends with

foreigners and learn about their culture and

country.

1. How did you become an education

consultant?

I lived and studied in London for a year, and

that was one of the highlights of my life.

Living there made me realize that I can use

my experience in helping my countrymen.

Most Japanese can’t speak English, so I

wanted to help them by becoming an

education consultant. As an education con-

sultant I can promote to Japanese people

the value of studying English abroad

especially here in the Philippines.

Fortunately, I was able to have the

opportunity to become a Phil-English

consultant and go abroad to visit schools.

2. Is it necessary to study abroad first and

experience the life of being a student

before becoming an education consultant?

Yes, it is necessary to become a student

first and study abroad because consultants

need to have a good command of the

English language so we can provide

pertinent information to our clients.

Communication is very important in this

profession. I communicate with all myclients in Japanese, but when speaking with

the staff or teachers in our partner schools,

a lot of times we use English. Consultants

have to be able to understand every detail

whether it is in English or Japanese so we

can provide our clients good quality

consultation. Lastly, if we studied abroad

prior to becoming an education consultant

we can give students first-hand knowledge

of how it is like to be a student in a foreign

country.

3. What qualities do you look for in schools

that make them marketable among

Phil-English clients?

Generally, I look at the satisfaction rate of

the school, curriculum, facilities, self-study

room and the atmosphere.

After providing her all the

needed school data, I concen-

trated on reassuring her about

her living condition and safety,

and this is not the case with

other students. Therefore each

consultation should be varied

with each student.

5. What is your guidingprinciple as an education

consultant?

There are some agents who

sugar-coat the information

they give to students. However,

I think it is my responsibility to

provide clients real life

information. In my opinion, it is

necessary that students know

both positive and negative

points of the school. Theyshould know what it is really

like to study and live in the

school they chose, to avoid

complaints in the future. It is

that simple, just offer them

realistic information and

honorable advice.

6. What advice can you give to

future study abroad students?

Most of them think that if they

study abroad they will be able

to speak English, but it is not

that easy. They have to study

hard and be eager to speak

with someone in English. Some

of them even worry about the

pronunciation of Filipinoteachers, however that is really

not necessary because their

English is really good. Most

importantly, they must contact

Phil-English and we’ll make

sure they are satisfied with

their study abroad experience.

4. What is your

counseling process

and what makes it

effective?

Most students when

they send me an email

or call me on the

phone their messages

are vague. All they say

is “I want to study

English.” So whenever I

consult with

prospective clients I

ask details like their

purpose for studying. Is

it for migrating,

travelling or trainingfor the TOEIC or IELTS

exam? What specific

score do they need? If I

have all the necessary

information, I can

match them to the

appropriate school. As

I’ve mentioned before,

every client has a

different purpose andpreference, so I have

to provide a

personalized

consultation to make it

effective for each

student. I remember

having a client who

knew her purpose for

studying, her needs

and preferences, so it

was very easy to

suggest, but she was

very worried about

travelling abroad.
