After doing some research I came to my opinion because:

We live in the 21st Century Project Based Learning is a method based on

Constructivist Ideologies The web is a vehicle for learning Project Based Learning teaches students more

than simply subject knowledge. Project Based, Web Based Learning allows for

the application of knowledge

Page 4: Web based project based learning

There’s an App for that!

21ST CENTURY SKILLSGAINS FROM PROJECT, WEB BASED LEARNING

* Critical Thinking, Problem Solving

* Identify, synthesize & analyze information

* Develop & use resources * Work collaboratively * Reflect on one’s work,

learning and success * Transfer knowledge to

novel situations

(Umphrey, 2010)

* Supports students to collaborate among one another, experts, resources from around the world

* Supports problem solving, critical thinking as students work with real life scenarios, questions, issues and problems

* Students work with central information and principles

(Kurubacak, 2005)

We live in a world that thrives on technology…so it only makes sense to incorporate this into our teaching (given that the technology does not overtake the curriculum, the learning)

In the 21st century it is not all about how well you can memorize something…or how well you can write a test. It is about how well you can perform.

Example? Want to make Shakespeare fun? Connect with a Shakespeare master online and have your students learn by acting out the play, watching live performances and by working with specialists.

CONSTRUCTIVIST THEORY GAINS FROM PROJECT, WEB BASED LEARNING

* Meaningful learning comes from knowledge construction

* Construction of knowledge comes from experiences and social interactions

(Drexler, 2010)

* Technology is an “information vehicle” – Students can actively explore knowledge

(Drexler, 2010) * Students drive their own

learning, teachers facilitate this

(Bell, 2010) * Students use higher level

thinking skills(Kurubacak, 2005)

Do you like listening to a professor lecture for three hours? Or would you prefer to engage in your learning? While lecturing has its place, it can be kind of mind numbing sometimes.

Example? Teaching health – specifically, methods for coping with stress? Why not have students investigate this for themselves?

WHY USE THE WEB?GAINS FROM PROJECT, WEB BASED LEARNING

* “Authentic Experiences”• There are various

opportunities for students to be “immersed” in a concept.

• Example: Studying Japan? Students can connect with students in Japan, view Japan, shop in Japan using Japanese currency

(Sidman-Taveau & Milner-Bolotin, 2005)

*Authentic, real life learning• Students can access,

gain insight into and build knowledge by understanding how concepts connect to real-life

(Kurubacak, 2005)

WHY USE THE WEB?GAINS FROM PROJECT, WEB BASED LEARNING

* Variety of Tools

Blogs, Web Quest, Slide Share, Prezi, wiki spaces, google, and that is just the beginning!

* The world is technologically complex! • Students learn to work

with technologies of the 21st century

(Kurubacak, 2005)

The web seems to be a part of our everyday life. It makes sense to utilize it, where appropriate, in the classroom.

Teaching students about the environment? Use blogs as a way for students to express their feelings, knowledge and concern! (Added benefit? Saves paper )

LIFE SKILLSGAINS FROM PROJECT, WEB BASED LEARNING

* Reflection• Understanding how you

learn, what you like, and what motivates you is an important skill for understanding how you will succeed

* Choice• Being able to make

decisions is an important skill for life, as an individual, as well as life as a member of the workforce

* Project Based Learning allows for student choice, and for students to play an active role in their learning. By playing a role in their learning students learn who they are, and develop an understanding of who they are as learners

* Requires students to be self-directed, self-regulated and find personal motivation

(Kurubacak, 2005)

APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE GAINS FROM PROJECT, WEB BASED LEARNING

* Real life learning allows for students to apply the concepts, knowledge and skills they have obtained – allows students to make use of their learning

ie: “Meaningful Learning”

(Sidman-Taveau & Milner-Bolotin, 2005)

* The web is a “vehicle” for exploring knowledge, as students investigate concepts, ideas or principles they are able to make connections to real life

Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge

(Drexler, 2010)

Page 18: Web based project based learning

Did you like Math in school? There are many kids who do not! Famous question: Why do I need to learn this?? Famous quote: I am just not good at mathFamous thought: Math is boring

Example: Teaching students about statistics? Have the students come up with their own surveys (which can be created online). Students will take the concepts of statistics and apply them to the real life use of statistics! Making math FUN! (or at least I think so..)

Page 19: Web based project based learning

Like any teaching method, strategy there are advantages and disadvantages to Web Based, Project Based Learning.

So what might be some issues with this method of teaching and learning?

Page 20: Web based project based learning

Using the web, web tools and technology in teaching requires the teacher to be “tech-savvy”

Teachers are facilitators, directors to students in project based learning. In order to use the web, allow for web based projects, teachers need to have the skills necessary to embark on such a task – this could prove to be quite challenging for some teachers

Page 21: Web based project based learning

Web based learning is “resource intensive” • There are many sites, programs, tools online

that are available for educational purposes. This being said, teachers need to have knowledge of such resources, know how to work with these resources and be able to identify beneficial resources from un-beneficial ones.

• Teachers also need to be able to teach students how to identify credible resources.

(Bleinmann, 2004)

Page 22: Web based project based learning

Web based, project based learning can have unpredictable outcomes• Technology has the potential to fail, causing

students and teachers added issues when working.

• Project based learning requires students to be self-directed and self-motivated. Not all students can do this naturally and as such may not thrive in this method of learning.

(Bleinmann, 2004)

Page 23: Web based project based learning

Web based, project based learning has many advantages, but it also has some potential issues.

I think this method of teaching and learning can be highly effective in the classroom so long as it has a place.ie:

Does it work for you as a teacher? For your students? For your school? Will it enhance the learning in your classroom?

Page 24: Web based project based learning
Page 25: Web based project based learning

I understand web based, project based learning to be an approach to teaching that allows for students to learn through investigation, active inquiry and through the active construction of knowledge.

I believe that WB, PB learning teaches students skills, provides them with opportunities that other teaching methods can not match and as such I think it is an appropriate, effective form of teaching and learning
