Here are examples of what’s included:
Printable Booklet: Simply print double-sided and fold. Use this to further student learning of each trait and prominent figure.
Comprehension Activities: These can be used as follow up activities to check for understanding throughout the week.
Class Book Pages: Provide each student with an opportunity to share about their experience with the trait. Bind the pages into a class book! A pre-made cover is included.
Word Work Activities: An engaging way to practice phonics skills and to continue learning vocabulary.
Parent Letters: Keep parents in the loop with regular parent communication. Parent letters for each episode include an option written from the teacher and an option written in the voice of the student.
We’ve included the following suggested weekly lesson sequence for your convenience.
Monday
Start your week by watching The Character Tree video. • Before watching: If you have time for a quick discussion, you could
ask your students what they think they already know about the character trait of integrity and have them share with a partner or call on a couple of students to share with the whole class.
• After watching: If you have time, have students share examples of integrity from the video. To extend their concept of integrity you could ask them to think of a specific way that they could show this trait in the coming day or week.
Tuesday
Follow up the video with the foldable book. Read as a whole class, or have students read independently. These books would make a nice home-school connection, or add them to student’s book boxes or bags and keep them at school. Depending on how much time you have, the cut and paste comprehension page would be a good fit as a subsequent activity.
Wednesday
Use our template to create a class book that showcases each child’s experiences with integrity. After each student has completed their page, assemble the book and read it to the class. Adding the completed book to your classroom library, or other shared space in your classroom would be a great way to encourage your students to revisit and read the book on their own.
ThursdayAfter spending time learning and talking about integrity and Sonia Sotomayor during the first half of the week, today would be a good day for checking student understanding with our comprehension questions.
FridayIf there is anything that you didn’t get to earlier in the week, finish that up today. Otherwise, today would be a good day for the making words activity and the word search.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to define the character trait of integrity, give an example and write about it.
Common Core Standards: • SL.1.2 Discuss key details in a video• RI.1.2 Identify the main topic• RI.1.3 Describe the connection between a person and concept• RI.1.4 Determine the meaning of vocabulary
Picture Book Recommendations: These picture books would be great to read to your class during this week as well as throughout the year! Use them to open up further discussions with your class about this week’s character trait.

The Character Tree Sonia Sotomayor & Integrity
I learned that integrity means being honest and having good morals. I also learned about a woman named Sonia Sotomayor. She is a justice in the Supreme Court. She uses integrity to help people know the difference between right and wrong. Sonia Sotomayor had to work hard to become a justice, she is only the third woman and very first Latin American to be a Supreme Court Justice.
I can show integrity too! One way that I can show integrity is:

When she was a little girl, Sonia
Sotomayor’s favorite thing to do
was read. She would read all kinds of
books, even her mom’s special
collection of encyclopedias! She
learned a lot from the books that
she read. Sonia loved reading so
much that as an adult, she wrote
her own book for kids to read!
Sonia’s parents were from the
country of Puerto Rico. At home,
Sonia spoke Spanish with her family.
Since Sonia’s father passed away when
she was young, she and her brother
both had jobs to help support their
family. From a young age, Sonia
learned the importance of hard work.
She also learned to always be honest in
her work, this is called having integrity.©The Primary Pal & The Character Treewww.charactertree.com
