Weather ToolsWhat are they? What do
they do?
The Most Common Weather Tools Are:
• Thermometer• Wind Vane• Anemometer• Barometer• Rain Gauge
• Sling Psychrometer
Thermometer• A thermometer is
a weather tool used to measure
the temperature.
Thermometer• A thermometer
measures temperature in
degrees Fahrenheit or
degrees Celsius
Wind Vane• By observing wind
vanes, we can know the direction of the wind. Knowing the
direction of the wind is an important part
in predicting the weather.
Wind Vane• Wind vanes indicate the
direction of the wind using
cardinal and intermediate
directions.
Anemometer• Wind speed is an
important part of weather.
• An anemometer is a weather tool that measures how fast the wind is blowing.
Anemometer
• An anemometer is a weather tool that measures wind speed in Miles Per Hour (MPH).
Barometer
• Barometers can help you predict
good or bad weather.
Barometer
• Barometers measure air pressure in
pounds per square inch (PSI)
Rain Gauge• A rain gauge is a
weather tool used to collect rain and determine how much rain has fallen.
Rain Gauge
• The rain gauge is really just a jar with a ruler on it.
Rain Gauge
• A rain gauge is used to measure the amount of rain in inches.
Sling Psychrometer
• A sling psychrometer measures relative humidity.
Relative Humidity
• The relative humidity tells us how “full” the air is at the time of measurement.
• For example, 90% relative humidity means that at that moment the air is holding 90% of the maximum amount of water it could.
Sling Psychrometer
• A sling psychrometer measures percent of relative humidity.
