The Suffolk Care Conference 2015

“Caring : rights... roles... responsibilities...”

conference programme on centre page

Welcome to our 8th annual conference.

We have returned to Ufford again this year as

we had feedback from last year that you enjoyed the venue and we are less likely to have travel problems as we have had around Ipswich

in the past.

Before writing this I read through my article for

last year and I could easily repeat everything I wrote as the issues are still there and have not gone away.

The domiciliary care changes are the biggest problem and still not in a good place. Last year I wrote that ACS had delayed the implementation

of the tendering process and it is now delayed again, a year later. I like to think that ACS have realised the implementation is much more

complicated than anticipated. I hope they will take this time to ensure the messages which their staff are giving out are correct and that

they understand how this is impacting on people’s lives who not only receive care but deliver it as well.

Negotiations for next year’s fees for care, other than home care, from Suffolk County Council is the next thing on the agenda and we will be

starting these this month. I would appreciate it if you could let me have some idea of your cost

pressure increases for next year so we can put a

robust argument together for a decent increase in our fees.

We are lucky enough to have speakers from the national bodies representing care provision in the country and I thank them for coming to

Suffolk to give us the bigger picture. I daresay that many of the problems in Suffolk are also happening in the rest of the country. Finances

being top of the list.

The directors have helped me a great deal this

year as the domiciliary care situation has taken so much time, they have been attending meetings and giving their input whenever

needed. I really appreciate their help and advice.

I thank the stand holders once more for attending

here, I hope you will find them interesting and informative and that you enjoy the day. Please let Moira or myself have any comments and if

there is anything you wish the Association to help you with, please let us know. Our

membership is growing year by year

Enjoy your day.

Strong demand for

the old & the new

We have now moved away from an environment dominated by

distress and have moved into a much more confident market.

UK Healthcare, specifically elderly and specialist care businesses have

become key targets for an ever increasing pool of buyers including Private Equity Funds, US REITS as well as the more traditionally funded trade buyers. The appetite for purpose built care homes

remains high with developers and operators once again facing stiff competition for sites from residential house builders. This is fuelled by development funding now being more widely available. In

contrast, individual operators and smaller regional groups have identified a niche market for the smaller, quality, older style, care homes offering a more personalised service in a family run environment. The result of this diverse range of requirements has

resulted in an up lift in demand for all types and sizes of care business & sites across the Eastern Counties. This activity is illustrated by the 4 sales (ranging from a 9 to a 61 bed home) we

have concluded in Suffolk alone so far this year.

Guidelines & quality standards to improve the quality of care

NICE produces a range of guidance, advice and tools that can help you make sure your care home provides the best service, and focus

on ways to improve it further— http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/

settings/care-homes

As well as providing assurance about the quality of services and

helping you to make improvements, using NICE guidance and quality standards can help you to prepare for CQC inspection. The CQC has introduced a framework for inspection, asking whether each service

is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. NICE quality standards are one way to provide evidence of the quality of care

being given.
