AS YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE … Education has always been a passion for me. What is most rewarding is helping others to realize their dreams by setting and reaching goals. Earning an advanced degree takes a tremendous amount of dedication, discipline, and sacrifice. On this day, it is my pleasure to participate in this celebration of incredible accomplishments.

When we reflect on our lives, we realize there are so few days we can really look back on and remember with excitement. This day is certainly one that will never be forgotten. I realize how far away that finish line seemed over the duration of your program, but you made it. Celebrate with exuberance!

It is important to remember all of the friends, colleagues, and family members who supported our graduates throughout this journey. It is also an honor to recognize our talented faculty and staff who helped our graduates realize their potential.

I am proud to represent University of the Rockies as the President, and I wish all of you the very best.

YOU MADE IT!

A LASTING LEGACYIn 1918 a train station was built to help move people … from point A to point B … from one stage of their lives to another. For 54 years, it was an active passenger depot for travelers on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railway.

That railway station became the first home to University of the Rockies and to Rockies Counseling Center.

Much has changed, including where University of the Rockies calls home. But, you might say that it’s still a station of movement.

Our students are gaining the strength and education they need to advance their lives.

HOW DID WE ARRIVE HERE?In 1998 Chapman University closed its doors in Colorado Springs. Its faculty members found a window of opportunity.

A handful of professors formed a new school so students could complete their graduate education.

“We weren’t done teaching,” recalls Dr. Sue Cooper, one of the founding members and senior vice president emeriti. “We met at a little Italian restaurant, and we decided that we were willing to do the work and to put our money and our time into this venture. It was for our students. They were too important, so we couldn’t fail.”

“LOGIC WILL GET YOU FROM A TO Z; IMAGINATION WILL GET YOU EVERYWHERE.” – ALBERT EINSTEIN

In 1999, with 13 original students, the Colorado School of Professional Psychology (COSPP) was born.

Dr. Emory Cowan leased a building on Pikes Peak Avenue to house the school and its three original classrooms. Faculty members continued to teach – and to do everything else required to run the school. “We did everything. Even the cleaning,” says Dr. Lorri White, former Director of Clinical Training and professor emerita.

Faculty members served dual roles as deans and administrators. In addition to teaching, they established the class schedule, wrote handbooks and the catalog, and pursued accreditation. Initial accreditation was granted by the Higher Learning Commission in 2003.

Resources became tight, and it was unclear as to whether the school could continue. The financial strain led to an opportunity. In 2007, Bridgepoint Education purchased COSPP and the name was changed to University of the Rockies. “The acquisition was pivotal for us to be able to continue. It also made us bigger and better than we could have imagined,” said White.

With support from Bridgepoint, University of the Rockies began offering courses online in 2008. Select programs and specializations were made available online to help serve even more individuals seeking higher education. The first online students to graduate walked in the 2010 commencement exercises.

In 2011, the University experienced meaningful expansion. The University also added three new programs to its School of Organizational Leadership, where students are trained to apply the principles of psychology in business fields. Also in 2011, the University celebrated students with military experience during the first SALUTE National Honor Society induction ceremony. The University also inducted its first Golden Key International Honour Society members that year.

In 2012, University of the Rockies relocated to Denver, CO followed by successful reaffirmation of accreditation from HLC in 2014. Today, University of the Rockies offers graduate degrees that prepare people to be leaders and collaborators in their communities, businesses, and relationships.

In 2015, the University revised the In-Residence Workshops, decoupling the curriculum from the program coursework. The learning outcomes were revised to align with the research learning outcomes that support the development of the dissertation. In 2016, the University launched its first Virtual In-Residence Workshop. This allowed students from all over the world to connect on a virtual platform. In 2017, the University launched the Applied Doctoral Project (ADP) as an applied alternative to research Dissertations for practitioner students. This ADP enables students to approach their final project from a practitioner’s perspective. By the end of 2018, University of the Rockies is planning to merge with sister institution, Ashford University.

“PEOPLE SOMETIMES ATTRIBUTE MY SUCCESS TO MY GENIUS; ALL THE GENIUS I KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IS HARD WORK.” – ALEXANDER HAMILTON

FROM FOUNDERSI imagined that we’d build a small, quality PsyD program. I wanted it to be accessible. We created the weekend classes to make the program available to those who might drive here for weekend in-residence classes.

– Dr. Sue Cooper, founding faculty member, first Dean of Faculty, and senior vice president emeriti

We can do things that other clinics and other programs dream about. We’re able to train better psychologists. It’s over the edge of what I could have imagined.

– Dr. Lorri White, founding faculty member and former Director of Clinical Training

FROM ALUMNII am so excited to be completing a lifelong goal by receiving my master’s degree! I’m even more excited about the new job I’ll be starting in a few weeks applying the knowledge I gained from my degree!

– Richard Rock, 2015, Master of Arts in Organizational Development and Leadership

For me, this wasn’t just a degree. It was a stepping stone to bigger and better things. My journey did not stop at earning my degree. For me, that is where it began.

– April Matteson, 2017, Master of Arts in Psychology, Mediation and Conflict Resolution Specialization

There are few doctorate-level, licensed psychologists near my home in Guatemala. I received a great education and so now people look for me and seek my expertise. I have the opportunity to help influence and train students and to bring the supportive culture that I found at University of the Rockies to students in Guatemala.

– Dr. Anna Alcahe, 2009, PsyD, Clinical Specialization

I pursued a doctorate degree because I decided to accomplish everything that I told myself I could not do. Throughout the process, there were many times when I felt that I made a mistake. But, right when I would begin to doubt myself one of my Professors or my Dissertation Chair would encourage me and enable me to believe in myself again. As a result, I am now Dr. Keynon Washington. I truly could not have succeeded without their support.

ACADEMIC DRESS

ACADEMIC COSTUME LENDS AN ELEMENT OF PAGEANTRY TO THE PROCEEDINGS. AT UNIVERSITY OF THE ROCKIES, THE FOLLOWING ACADEMIC COSTUME IS ADOPTED FOR THE OCCASION:

GOWNS

The traditional gown resembles a long cape. The length and cut of the sleeve indicates a person’s level of study. In our ceremony, you will notice long sleeves with a semi-circular cut at the bottom to indicate master’s degrees and round open sleeves for the doctoral degrees.

The material is black or silk for master’s and doctoral degrees. The doctor’s gown may have a border down the front on either side. The color is distinctive of the character of the degree.

• Master of Business Administration - Drab

• Master of Science - Gold

• Doctor of Education - Light Blue

• Doctor of Philosophy - Dark Blue

• Doctor of Psychology - Gold

CORDS

An Honor Cord is a token consisting of twisted cords with tassels on either end awarded to members of honor societies or for various academic and non-academic achievements, awards, or honors. Usually, cords come in pairs with a knot in the middle to hold them together.

Golden Key International Society members’ robes are embellished with blue and gold cords. SALUTE National Honor Society members’ robes are embellished with red, white and royal blue cords.

MORTAR BOARDS AND TAMS

The academic cap also called a mortar board-because of its resemblance in shape to the device utilized by masons to hold mortar-was reputed to have originated from a biretta worn by scholarly clergies, which was used to signify their superiority and intelligence.

The other hat that you will see in our ceremony is called the tam. it is traditionally worn by those who have been conferred a doctorate degree. At University of the Rockies, our faculty have indicated that the tam would be worn by those that have entered the academic field.

HOODS

The coloring and size of the hoods represents the type and subject of the degree earned, as well as the institution from which it was awarded.

• The interior lining, generally satin, displays the colors of the institution from which the wearer received the degree.

• The outer edge of the cowl (the portion one would put over one’s head if wearing it as an actual hood) is trimmed in velvet. The color of the velvet hood trimming is distinctive of the academic field.

• The length of the hood will vary with the level of academic achievement as well. Only the doctoral hood will have “panels” at the sides of the hood that lie cape-like across the back.

Among our graduates and our faculty and staff, you may commonly see the following distinctive colors lining the hoods and trim:

• Master of Arts in Counseling - Light Blue

• Master of Arts in Education - Light Blue

• Master of Arts in Human Development - Citron

• Master of Arts in Human Services - Citron

• Master of Arts in International Leadership - Drab

• Master of Arts in Organizational Development and Leadership - Drab

• Master of Arts in Psychology - Gold

• Master of Arts in Public Sociology - White
