Hand-arm Vibration (HAV)

•  HAVS or “dead hand” affects the nerves, blood vessels, muscles and joints of the hand, wrist and arm •  It includes “vibration white finger”, which can cause severe pain in the affected fingers •  Progressive disease, categorised into three stages, believed that the first can be reversible, but after that it is for life, severely affecting quality of life through pain and lack of grip strength

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE THE RISK?

•  Keep warm, especially hands – wear gloves and extra clothing when it’s cold

•  Don’t smoke or at least cut down first before and whilst at work – smoking affects blood flow

•  Exercise your fingers and hands to improve good blood flow

•  Do not use more force than is necessary when using tools or machines

•  Try to avoid long periods of using equipment without a break – short bursts are better

•  Keep your equipment in good working order - ask your Supervisor to make sure it’s properly serviced

•  Do not use worn or damaged inserts (points, chisels, drill bits etc)

•  Just because it doesn’t shake, it doesn’t mean that it won’t work •  Let the tool do the work

•  Hold tool in a stance which allows good balance •  Hold tool below shoulder level where possible •  Restrict the contact pressure to a level where the tool function most effectively •  Always grip both handles and restrict grip force just sufficient to hold tool securely

RELEVANCE OF DUST TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY •  Over 500 construction workers are believed to die from exposure to silica dust

every year •  Dust could be ‘the next asbestos’ for the construction industry. •  The fee payable by duty holders found to be in material breach of the law is £124

per hour •  Silica dust can be extremely hazardous when inhaled over long periods of time or

in large quantities.

SILICA DUST Silica is one of the most common naturally occurring elements on the planet. Silica, the mineral compound silicon dioxide (SiO2), is found in two forms -- crystalline or noncrystalline (also referred to as amorphous). Sand and quartz are common examples of crystalline silica. (Silica-safe, 2015) The hazard arises when the elements are disturbed – by drilling, cutting, grinding and chipping. These processes break up the material and allow the crystalline particles can then enter the respiratory system. This is commonly called respiratory crystalline silica (RCS)

WHY IS DUST A PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION? •  Produced by many construction processes (e.g. drilling, chiseling, slitting, sanding, grinding…)

•  Many base materials contain hazardous material (e.g. silica/quartz in concrete, mortar, bricks & blocks, wood dust in hardwood, softwood, MDF and chipboard)

•  All EU countries have legal workplace exposure limits (WEL) for different dust types: Inhalable

DAILY CHECKS FOR ON TOOL EXTRACTION § Damage to parts of the system such as the hood or ducting. Repair or replace straight away.

§ Replacing worn cutting discs etc

§ Maintain the extraction unit’s flow of air.

§ Check the airflow indicator (audible alarm) and any built-in cleaning mechanism works properly.

§ Follow the manufactures instructions.

§ Replace filters when needed.

§ Clean the equipment regularly (e.g. wipe down). Do not let dust build up on working parts.

USING ON-TOOL EXTRACTION § Following the method of work and manufacturer’s instructions

§ Using the tool in the right way – e.g. move a grinder in the direction of the blade’s movement, not against it.

§ Ensuring the capture hood is as close as possible to the work surface § A good connection to both the capture hood and extraction unit. Use an adaptor if needed, not tape.

§ Emptying the extraction unit regularly. Use disposable waste bags. Seal and place in the right waste container. Do not empty these bags to recycle them.

§ Keeping the collected dust dry. Some extraction units are designed for both dry materials and liquids. Using them in this way when they are part of an on-tool extraction system can reduce the airflow needed for on-tool to work.

MAINTAINING ON-TOOL EXTRACTION •  Daily checks are not enough to ensure that on-tool extraction remains effective over a long

period.

•  A competent person should thoroughly examine and test all individual parts of the system(s) for damage, wear & tear at least every 14 months to ensure it meets the Manufacturer’s Technical Performance specifications.

•  More frequent testing may be needed if regular wear and tear could limit the effectiveness of the system more quickly.
