What’s happening at Ascot this month:

Bricktober Brick Playtubs

A number of Brick Playtubs have been delivered to schools and Lego Playgroups this month including two for the kids of South Thornlie Primary School. Tracey Nelson came along to our meeting this week to pick up their tubs and said she was just as excited as the kids. Their Lego Playgroup started three years ago at the request of her own son and now has about 45 children attending each fortnightly session.

They accommodate several playing groups at a time and also have books for reading and colouring in.

President Ron presented the boxes to Tracey and in return she gave thanks on behalf of the school and presented The Rotary Club of Ascot with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Braving Atlanta

In June this year our Club members Di and Bev and their partners attended Rotary International’s Convention in Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, USA and this week they told us a little about the highlights of their trips.

Di told us that she and Art flew into Toronto, Canada to visit relatives before taking a three days road trip down to Atlanta. Di said the reinvigorated modern city was the home of Coca Cola and one of the world’s best aquariums, large enough to accommodate whale sharks. She and Art also enjoyed being hosted in a corporate box to watch Atlanta Braves Baseball teams at their new stadium 30klm out of town. She said there was no public transport links but that it was sponsored by Uber!

On the other hand, Bev and Alan, huge Country and Western Music fans, preceded their 16th Convention with a 10 day Sights and Sounds music tour. Bev encouraged everyone to attend a Convention saying that it’s an incredible way to see a city as Rotary organises so much, making it so easy, friendly and enjoyable.

Di spoke of the enormous size of the convention centre to house the 33,000 attendees from 174 countries and of the House of Friendship where the Rotary World comes together to share ideas, best practises and successful projects.

During the 4 days, they enjoyed numerous workshops and many amazing guest speakers, including Andrew Young, an American politician, diplomat and activist who, along with Martin Luther King Jnr, was an early leader of the Civil Rights Movement before becoming a US Congressman, US Ambassador to UN, and mayor of Atlanta. He was involved in the release of Nelson Mandela, the abolition of apartheid in South Africa and is currently working on finding good protein rich food to feed the world’s hungry. Ashton Kutcher, who changed Di’s perception of the actor entirely when she learned he was heavily involved in the development of digital programs designed to address sexual exploitation of children and the proliferation of child pornography. See Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children. So far they’ve identified thousands of perpetrators. Rebecca Bender told of how as a gullible young woman in USA she was emotionally kidnapped and endured 6 years of abuse before finally escaping from a life of sex trafficking. Brittany Arthur who told of how simply sitting next to and befriending a Japanese Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Melbourne, Australia, changed her life forever. Brittany followed her friend to Japan to study before experiencing Japan’s worst earthquake and its tsunami in 2011. She returned home to Australia and visited her local Rotary Club who convinced her that the world was now her oyster. She currently lives and works in Germany where she is President of the Rotaract Club of Berlin and she said they are all young adults doing things and are the future of Rotary. Several presenters, including keynote speaker Bill Gates, encouraged the World not to be complacent in the fight for Polio eradication saying just three isolated hotspots remained but the fight is not over. Hugh added a case has just been noted in a fourth area, in Syria. Other speakers on Polio included Minda Dentler who was abandoned by her family in India, adopted by a family in USA and went on to become the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in Oct 2013. Jack Nicklaus suffered Polio as a child but went on to become a golf icon.

Di finished by presenting a limited edition medallion from Atlanta, celebrating The Rotary Foundation Centennial this year, to Hugh for the many years of wonderful work he has contributed to The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Alumni Association

WHAT IS A ROTARY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION?

A Rotary alumni association is an active organization of former Rotary Peace Fellows, Ambassadorial Scholars,

Group Study Exchange participants, Global and District Grant scholars, Vocational Training Team members, Rotary

volunteers, recipients of Grants for University Teachers and Discovery Grants, Interactors, Rotaractors, Rotary

Youth Exchange and New Generations Service Exchange participants, and others who experienced Rotary's

programs.

WHAT IS THE ROTARY ALUMNI NETWORK?

The Rotary Alumni Network is Rotary's worldwide alumni association, which seeks to keep all alumni connected

to Rotary. All alumni and alumni associations are part of the network.

WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF AN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION?

1. To establish and maintain a common bond among Rotary alumni

2. To enable alumni to network with one another and with Rotarians

3. To provide alumni opportunities for involvement in Rotary service

4. To facilitate alumni membership in Rotary and Rotaract clubs, including e-clubs

HOW DO MEMBERS OF AN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEET AND COMMUNICATE?

Members of an alumni association decide how often to meet and when and where. They may also communicate

between meetings by telephone, email, and social networking sites. It is strongly recommended that an annual

meeting take place in conjunction with the local district conference.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF JOINING AN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION?

Alumni associations provide opportunities to maintain Rotary connections and support Rotary’s mission of

Service Above Self:

• Networking with professional leaders who share the Rotary experience

• Serving on district selection committees for future program participants

• Serving as mentors to current and future program participants

• Speaking at Rotary and Rotaract club meetings and district events

• Participating in local and international service projects
