VAASA
We have the energy!
The Vaasa Region is one of the
most dynamic regions in Finland.
Entrepreneurship is our way of life.
Persistent with a strong will to
succeed – that’s us. Throughout
the centuries, starting your own
business has been an attractive
option for making a living in the
Vaasa area. As the region is
bilingual in Finnish and Swedish,
we are used to hearing and using
languages other than our own –
and that’s why we are better in
languages than the average Finn. 32The region is a pioneer in
electrical and energy technology:
The Western Finland Centre of
Expertise, specialized in energy
technology, is located in Vaasa, as
well as the Vaasa Energy Institute,
a coalition of two polytechnics and
the University of Vaasa. Innovative
new ideas are turned into highly
developed products in the hands
of professionals in more than 800
energy technology companies.
Environmental technology has a
strong foothold as the demand for
renewable energy solutions
Energy Cluster Leads the Way
increases rapidly. Wärtsilä Finland,
ABB, Vacon, Vaasa Engineering,
KWH Pipe and Citec are the
largest globally known industries
in the Vaasa region, all of them
with affi liate companies in other
parts of the world. Marine ship
power engines and offshore
installations, power and
automation technologies, AC
frequency converters, the list goes
on. These strong brands show the
way for the smaller but yet equally
innovative and success-hungry
companies.
The region’s economic structure
is diversifi ed, which guarantees
strength on a wide basis. Apart
from the energy cluster, the metals
industry is also thriving. Large and
small, the region’s enterprises also
cover many a foreign company’s
needs in the fi eld of product
development.
The manufacture of prefabricated
wooden houses, as well as larger
boats, satisfi es quality-conscious
customers. The still fairly young
Multifaceted Business Environment
5media branch is growing and
attracting more and more
productions to the beautiful,
versatile surroundings of the
Vaasa region. Nature’s offerings,
such as blueberries and
buckthorn, among others, are
signifi cant export articles both
plain and processed.
Information on all enterprises in
the Vaasa region can be found
online through the Business
Search Engine at www.vasek.fi .
Excellent road, rail, sea and plane
connections keep both industry
and people rolling. Frequent
passenger fl ights to Helsinki and
Stockholm, as well as a daily
cargo service, facilitate the
functioning of enterprises.
Within the region, distances are
short and can be covered quickly.
The area also houses Finland’s
longest bridge, which connects
the archipelago with the mainland.
Seven university and polytechnic
units offer education up to
doctoral degrees and provide
the region with a professional
workforce. Foreign students in
particular are drawn to the city
Success Factors

We work hard but also know how
to balance work and leisure time.
