s a Charlottesville-area resident since the late 1960s, I'm often asked what I think about the "changes." Mostly this comes from people worried we (or "they" as developers are usually called) are overbuilding roads, houses, stores and diluting the small-town character that brought us or kept us here. My answer is that Charlottesville is better than ever. This isn’t because I especially like retail "experiences" further and further from the old town center, or that I don’t worry if the 67th hair salon to open offering three-figure makeovers will finally tip the scales against barber- shops like Staple's (where I got my first cut). It's because the mix of old and new (or high and low in cultural terms) makes for a fascinating and engaging small town. Hogwaller on one side of town, sushi bar on the other. Pig's feet in the butcher case over here, braised pork belly on the tasting menu over there. As we huddled at the Blue Moon Diner in the late 1980s hatching a plan for a "C-Ville" newspaper, it was appropriate that we sat on a Main Street that reflected the Old Charlot- tesville—think tire stores, radiator shops, the bus station—while being surrounded by the hipsters who evolved into the creative class that helped make C-Ville (the town, and the newspaper) what it is today. In the following pages, you will see ads from a mix of businesses from E.A. Clore and Sons, which opened in 1830, to Telegraph, which opens this week. By joining our "We Are C-Ville" campaign these advertisers are reaching out to our readers and underwriting our work as a community newspaper. Roger Voisinet akA the “Ice Guy”

Roger’s passions in life are ice hockey and creating green energy solutions for residential and commercial clients of his real estate firm, RE/MAX Realty Specialists where he has earned EcoBroker designations and Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achieve-ment Awards from RE/MAX International. Roger was able to combine these passions when he joined a group of investors that brought Main Street Arena back to the community; giv-ing children a place to learn the game that has brought him so much enjoyment throughout his life. Their focus was to create a business that the Charlottesville community could enjoy while also ensuring Main Street Arena would have a minimal impact on the environment. To that end he orchestrat-ed the installation on the MSA roof of one of Virginia’s largest privately-funded solar electrical generating systems. Roger is proud to be able to offer Main Street Arena to Charlottes-ville as a place for families to enjoy themselves in a low-impact,

sustainable atmosphere.

Yoga for Every BODY - Really! Fifteen or 20 years ago it would have been unusual for someone to incorporate yoga into their lives. Now it is nearly the norm. Nearly everyone has heard of yoga, and many have experienced it in some way, shape, or form.

There is a common misconception that yoga is only for the young, thin, or flexible. This could not be further from the truth. Yoga is for everyone, regardless of their physical condition. It’s often thought that yoga is about stretching and flexibility. While this is definitely an aspect of the physical postures, yoga is really about creating balance through developing strength, balance, and flexibility.

At Allied Yoga we offer primarily Iyengar Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga. Iyengar Yoga is known for its strong attention to detail and align-ment, often employs the use of props, such as wall ropes, blocks, blankets, and straps. The other two key aspects of Iyengar yoga are the sequencing of the poses (the idea being that there is a cumula-tive effect to the poses done successively), and the concept of timing (holding of the poses allows for a deeper experience and penetra-tion of the poses’ benefits.) Allied Yoga has three of the ten certified Iyengar teachers in the state on staff.

At Allied Yoga we offer Yoga for EVERY Body seven days a week. All abilities and levels of experience are wel-come. Please see our website: alliedyoga.com for more in-formation on our sched-ule, staff, and location.

• Allied Yoga has highly trained, professional, certified instructors.

• Yoga for any person regardless of age, shape, physical condition.

• Elite athletes, “regular Joes”, and those dealing with physical

“issues” can all experience the benefit of yoga.

• ANY one can do yoga.

• Yoga has been proven to help chronic back pain, depression,

insomnia, ADHD, anxiety, eating disorders, and more.

We have over 25 years’ experience in the hearth industry

Almost 30 years ago, in the midst of the energy crisis and renewed national interest in burning wood, Kim Kepchar was looking for an idea for starting a business. Ads in the back of Mother Earth News extolled the freedom and unlimited possibilities of sweeping chimneys. Fond memories of Mary Poppins and the excitement of a chimney fire from his youth made it easy to answer the ad. Since then, Kim spent the better part of three decades developing the skills, knowledge and expertise to service all wood and gas hearth products and venting. No one in Virginia knows more about Vermont Castings stoves. In 2009, he entered a business partnership with his good friend Jonathan Schnyer, who provided the extra energy and business acumen to open Wooden Sun Hearth Shop. Since opening, they have added grills, outdoor kitchens and awnings to their hearth lines. Both are committed to putting their extensive knowledge, training and experience to work

selling, installing, and servicing the highest quality, safest and most efficient hearth and outdoor products. As Class A contractors, Wooden Sun can do the whole job, whether you are simply swapping out an existing wood stove, or building an entire chimney and hearth from scratch, Wooden Sun has a full team of design, carpentry, masonry and hearth specialists. From the moment you step foot into their retail store in the IX building (or brand new patio and outdoor kitchen out front), to the arrival at your home of one of their home heating consultants, professionally certified installers or service specialists, they pledge friendly, expert and timely service. They see your home as a system, selling and installing products that are safe and efficient. They value your comfort and your health, and are fully committed to helping you to Bask in the Warmth!

I am Joyce Watson, and for a very long time I’ve wanted to be in the wine business! However, until I opened Wine Made Simple in April of 2011, wine was only a hobby, not a profession. My introduction to Charlottesville and its wine culture

started in 2004. My husband and I traveled from our home in N.J. to visit area wineries during a week’s vacation. We did the same thing in the summer of 2005. We decided on a 5-year plan that would allow us to leave our corporate jobs

and move to Charlottesville. It started with purchasing a house in 2006. It took a few years to make the transition, but in January 2011 I was ready to resign from my Atlanta-based position in marketing, public relations and communications.

Helping customers discover new wines, suggesting food and wine pairings, offering classes and organizing wine-themed events is very rewarding. I’ve been touched by the support and encouragement that customers have extended. To realize

a dream is something to take great satisfaction from. Thank you Wine Made Simple patrons…you’re simply the best!

Wine Made Simple focuses on wines priced $20 or under, with a “3 for $20” selection. Wine is organized by style descriptors with smaller producers and

brands not found everywhere. (We also have a beer section!)

I was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and raised in Albemarle County on the family farm. It was there my dad taught me the meaning of hard work and to never give up. My childhood dream was to own a pizza place, so I started working in a local pizza and Italian restaurant at the age of 15 as a prep/busboy. Taught by true New Yorkers, by 16 years old I was already spinning pies. I fell in love with the business and the art of mak-ing pizza. I believe every pie is different, so we always put a little love in each one and they turn out great every time! I became manager at the age of 18. Two years later I attended the International Pizza Convention in Las Vegas. I continued to manage until I decided to expand my culinary horizon and started working for Sysco Food service of Virginia traveling the state.

When I turned 30 I started my own family and started a Landscaping company while helping out with the family beef cattle operation. After eight years of landscaping, in 2011, a good friend and a "brother from another mother," Vinny, came to me with an opportunity to open Slice with him. So Slice was born on March 2011. In November of 2012, I became the owner of Slice. So at the age of 40 my dream came true! My new dream...to change the way families eat together, back at one table. This is where my idea of "The Pizza Factory" came to mind, where families can make their own pizza at the table. Although this is still in planning mode I think it's a great way for families to have interactive family time. One of my hobbies is gardening, where this spring we plan to grow our own basil for our homemade pesto.

I believe the makings of a great pie is to keep it simple. Slice uses the freshest local, finest imported ingredients and the best American made cheese money can buy! I'll bet the farm on it! So the next time you guys and gals are in Barracks Road and you want to see us at work, just ask! All are hand-stretched pies, we even put them in the air! Get your piece at Slice today!

Hi, I’m Katie Corish and I have been a REALTOR in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area since 1976.

I opened The New House Company in 1981.

Since then, intriguing things have happened. Buyers and Sellers have become enthusiastic investment clients. Tenants have become Buyers, Sellers have become Tenants, and many former Buyers and Sellers who no longer live in the area have added Charlottesville area properties to their investment portfolios. We have even attracted a group of “Undecideds” who want to list property for rent AND for sale, and just let the one that happens first decide! In all of these cases, The New House Company is uniquely positioned to provide the full range of needed services.

With a foot in each market ... we can help YOU win in this one.

ABERDEEN BARN

Sometimes you just want

a steak.

A Charlottesville tradition since 1965

STARTED by George Spathos who arrived to the

United States from Greece at age eighteen, the Aberdeen Barn has been a family owned and operated business since 1965. George began his restaurant career with a small breakfast place on Main St. in the 1950’s where he worked to fulfill his dream of opening a big time steakhouse, one similar to those he had seen in New York City upon arriving to this country. The Aberdeen Barn is just that – a ‘big time steakhouse’ – a true upscale dining establishment run to the highest standard. Familiar yet innovative, traditional yet forward-thinking, these are all attributes unique to the Aberdeen Barn experience. Dinner at “the Barn” has become as central to the Charlottesville experience as tailgating at Scott Stadium before the big game. Today, you’ll find George’s son and daughter, Terry and Angela, running the show, working to achieve that fine balance between honoring their father’s dream while providing the type of upscale experience today’s fine dining customer requires. Head Chef Robert Johnson and Assistant Chef, Curtis Burton combine for 70 years of service. Together with a seasoned wait staff, they work as a family to maintain the tradition of quality that defines this class institution and proudly bring it into the future.

Blue Ridge Country Store / 518 E Main St / On the Downtown Mall Across from the Post Office / 434.295.1573

GET FRESH. GET HEALTHY

The Blue Ridge Country Store started on the Downtown Mall April 7, 1997 with some help from my grandfather. From the beginning I, Dan, and my wife Patty were truly a family business with our oldest daughter Sara helping at the cash register as a 7 year old and our youngest daughter Emily, who was just out of diapers, playing for hours in the front corner.

Our youngest boy Zach worked in the kitchen for several years along with his brothers, Josh and Eric. The next generation, our grandsons Macen and Garrison, have also been able to lend a hand. Even my 73 year old dad, a retired Air Force Col-onel, helps with the dishes earning the nickname “dish dog”. Not to be left out, my mother Lynn helps with Facebook posting.

The store has always been about family and friends with people stopping by daily to chat with me and all the staff. It really helps that our cashiers over the years have been like extended family and have represented the store as such. Because of that connection, most of the decora-tions have come from customers over the years.

The store has truly helped us make a difference locally and globally. In addition to helping several charities, the donation bucket at the cash register has supported a group in Haiti for over 3 years.

Now, almost 16 years later, Patty and I truly realize that the Blue Ridge Country Store has been a wonderful connection not only to our family, but to all the faces we see each morning. If we haven’t met you, come pay us a visit and enjoy the only salad bar on the Downtown Mall. You can also check out our selection of Virginia products, gourmet groceries, or any number of grab-n-go items. If you’re lucky, you might even smell some fresh baked muf-fins, breakfast sandwiches or cookies making their way from the oven.

Thank you Charlottesville for all of your support and friendship. Knowing you has truly been out pleasure.

A sixth generation, family business, E.A. Clore Sons was established in 1830 by Moses Clore, maker of chairs, tables, chicken coops and coffins. Over the years we have added to the line (we no longer make the chicken coops or coffins) but one thing has not changed- our dedication to making an heirloom. We still bring in green wood, air-dry it outdoors for up to 2 years. It is then put in the kiln until a moisture level of only 6% is obtained. This low moisture level gives stability to the wood so your bed, dresser or dining table, whatever you choose, should remain strong and beautiful throughout the years.

All our furniture is handcrafted from solid hardwood of cherry, walnut, mahog-any or oak, with various finishes available within those woods. If one of those finishes does not suit, custom stains are available for a small surcharge. Further, we understand the need to modify or create a new piece, so custom designs are a possibility, as well. We invite homeowners or businesses to contact us regarding special needs you may have, we would be happy to furnish a quote.

E.A. Clore Sons makes furniture for almost every room in the house but we are legendary for our incredibly sturdy chairs. If you have visited some local restau-rants, you have sat in our workhorse - the simple Plain Chair. All of our chair

E.A. ClorE SonS, InCstyles carry a rush seat, which used to be cattail rush many decades ago. It has now been replaced with twisted kraft paper cord, which we lacquer after the seats are woven, for a tough, cleanable seat. This rush seat will last for 30 to 40 years, or more. It may also be reseated, allowing for another generation to keep and use our chairs, the ultimate in sustainability.

Some lucky students on the Lawn at UVA use Clore furniture, such as our ladderback rocker, the #84C, a classic. Each student at Woodberry Forest, an Orange County prep school, are supplied a bed, chest, desk and chair. We also supply the dining room furniture, which has withstood the use of thousands of boisterous young men!

We have recently consolidated our former retail space on N. Main Street in Mad-ison with the factory showroom. Now our factory showroom, at 303 Clore Place, displays our furniture as well as the vendors we represent. We would love to see you, to proudly show you our quality and introduce you to a lifetime of easy-care, timeless furniture.

“We met at a house party at the University in 2006, and since then we’ve done everything together. Opening our gallery in Charlottesville is just a dream come true, and Telegraph is a piece of us. We’re eager to unveil the shop. It’s been such a whirlwind– it’s hard to believe March 1st is almost here!”

Telegraph is a new art gallery and shop offering a broad selection of prints, independent books and magazines, and objet d'art. With a commitment to accessible and affordable art, the upstart gallery seeks out emerging artists and commissions exclusive designs each month, all to become screen printed posters in limited-edition runs. “Original pieces of art are often a bigger-than-average cost commitment, so we’re trying to give people the chance to own limited, interesting works of art that are unique and special without having a huge price tag.”

David and Kate moved back from Oakland, California less than three months ago - and Telegraph, the new art gallery downtown, has sprung up almost overnight. Virginia natives and University alumni, the couple both have backgrounds in screen printing and sales, but the gallery is a new venture. “Brick and mortar will be such a nice change – for the first time, we can actually meet our collectors, discuss the pieces, and make real connections with our community.”

Hear,in Virginia,The World’s Great Choral Music

In the fall of 1966, a small group of musicians in Charlottesville came together with the shared desire to perform major classical choral works from the oratorio repertoire for audiences in the community. After a year of organizing, auditioning, and rehearsing, the Oratorio Society debuted with a performance of Handel’s Messiah on March 8, 1968 in the auditorium of Albemarle High School.

More than 1,500 singers from the community have sung as members of the Oratorio Society, delighting audiences of all ages at venues throughout the area. Since its founding, the Oratorio Society chorus has performed many of the greatest oratorios, including Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah – along with more recent and deeply moving compositions such as Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. In honor of its 30th anniversary, the Oratorio Society commissioned a work by former Poet Laureate Rita Dove and composer Walter Ross. The Oratorio Society premiered the resulting piece, titled The Pleasure’s in Walking Through: A Song of the Seasons, in March 1998 with Ms. Dove as the soprano soloist.

The longest-running community chorus in Charlottesville, the Oratorio Society is one of a shrinking number of such organizations in the United States that give audiences the opportunity to hear and appreciate the genius and inspiration of the greatest composers in high-quality, affordable, live performances for all ages. Our 80 singers, ranging from university students to retirees, come from all walks of life; many have considerable choral singing experience, and some are professional musicians and music teachers. The Oratorio Society's Music Director, Michael Slon, has been hailed as "the best conductor in Charlottesville," known for "consistently tak[ing] ensembles to the spiritual place within pieces, getting there through precision of musical execution."

On February 16 and 17, 2013, the Charlottesville & University Symphony Or-chestra brought 30 members of the Oratorio Society together with the University Singers to perform Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky – the first time these three orga-nizations have collaborated. The spectacle of 180 musicians together on one stage performing this powerful 20th century composition captivated two near-capacity audiences and encourages us to pursue more local partnerships.

The Oratorio Society is a member of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence and Piedmont Council for the Arts, is affiliated with the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia, and is supported in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and friends in the community.

Michael Slon [...] turns every piece of music into something magical!

In the five years I have come to Oratorio Christmas concerts, this was the best by far.

[Michael Slon] has artistic talent and gets so much subtlety from the chorus! Bravo! Love the music! Thank you!

[This year’s Christmas concert was] generous and altogether moving. Thank you for drawing together our community for an hour of wonders. - Former UVa president John Casteen

Michael is a highly skilled professional: he showed class, flair, warmth, charm, and considerable musical knowledge, which nicely complemented the music he skillfully conducted. Let me put it this way: Slon compares to many local conductors as pro-fessional football compares to high school football.

The Senior Center provides everything science says we need to age well. Here, people pursue lifelong learning; maintain physical wellness; explore creativity; stay socially connected through travel and recreation; and remain

The C&O was always a restaurant.

The C&O Restaurant It started this way: an old flop house/diner across the street from the C&O passenger station on Water Street, catering more to the men who worked on the railroad than the passengers that traveled on it. The C&O was always a restaurant. Upstairs, now the restaurant’s most formal dining room, served as residence to the families who operated the diner downstairs. Later, that room was equipped with bunk beds that were used by the railroad men who worked between Charlottesville and Clifton Forge and occasionally needed a place to spend the night.

Fast-forward to 1968The C&O closed and laid fallow for a time in the late 60’s. In 1974 it was purchased by Sandy McAdams and Philip Stafford. After signing the papers and getting the keys to the abandoned space, Sandy and Philip walked into their new place as proud new owners. Sandy told Philip as they walked through the door, “ We’re walking into one of the finest restaurants in America.” These two visionaries, along with a handful of earth-struck dreamers, bought a truck, got

permission to tear down some old barns and outbuildings in Albemarle County, reclaimed the wood, bought it to a struggling downtown and built the C&O. Although the Gallery, the terrace, the patio and the mezzanine have been added over the years, the nucleus of the C&O remains unchanged.

Fast-forward 38 years“The C&O has always been a place for dreamers,” says C&O Proprietor Dave Simpson who came to the restaurant in 1980. Hundreds of believers have worked at the C&O during the last 38 years. They are the ones that keep the magic in this well-worn warren. “There’s a lot of love here,” says Dave. I am pleased the way the staff relates to each other, the clientele, and the restaurant’s history; the bright road ahead it is nothing short of magic. Having Dean Maupin, who cut his culinary teeth at the C&O in the early 90’s adds new sparkle to the mix. “Dean is not only an amazing chef who is upping the C&O’s culinary game nightly, but he’s an amazing man,” says an admiring Simpson. “He brings the same thoughtful warmth, devotion, patience and love to the C&O that he uses with his talented wife Erin in raising their three beautiful children.” Dean has great vision. Just right for pointing out the stars in the C&O constellation to the next generation of dreamers.

So, the first Shenanigans opened in an old house on Ivy Road, and the family lived over the store. Lucky kids—Kai’s and Charlottesville’s!

Nearly 40 years later and in its new location in the thriving West Main Street corridor, Shenanigans still offers the same neighborhood toy store feel with its hand-picked selection of toys, books, games, dolls and stuffed animals. And Kai and her staff still provide the same great service to another generation (or two) of children and their grownups.

Shenanigans is FUN—for kids as well as adult shoppers looking for a bit of escape. Engaging arts and crafts, science kits, games and building sets avoid the driest and unappealing label of “educational.” Let’s face it, the kids are on to us! They want to explore and exercise their curiosity in enjoyable and original ways—the best prescription for life-long learning.

There are no shenanigans about quality though—a well-made toy is not only beautiful but safer and will usually serve several children in its lifetime.

Charlottesville resident Angelo Jennings owns Grout & Carpet Wizards Inc., a floor restoration business now in their 7th year. They provide residential and commercial tile/grout cleaning and sealing, re-grouting/re-caulking, natural stone cleaning and sealing, and carpet & upholstery cleaning.

We caught up with the young entrepreneur this past week to learn more about him and his business and how he got involved in the industry.

Jason - So Angelo, let’s start with where exactly you are from and how you ended up here.

Angelo - I was born (feb.22 /1978 )and raised in Ireland in County Cork. When I was 8 years old my parents decided to move to The Isle of Man which is a self governing island in the middle of the Irish sea with a population of about 84,000. In 1991 we moved from Castletown Isle of Man to the small town of Madisonville, Kentucky.

Jason - Wow! You really had an interesting childhood. So then what ?

Angelo - After highschool, I went back to Ireland and England to live with relatives. I went to work for my Aunt and Uncle in Grimsby in the North East of England. They had a successful roofing business. I also lived in Manchester and sold office supplies for a couple of months which I thought was cool because I was a Manchester United Fan.

Jason - Ok. I’m with you. Very interesting. So then you came back to Kentucky, right?

Angelo - I came back to KY in 1998 and I still was not sure what direction I was going. My father and I were at a home & garden show in the Ft. Lauderdale area where we were introduced to a business providing tile and grout cleaning services. I went home knowing that this is a service needed just about everywhere. I re-turned to Madisonville, Ky and started my venture. However, I soon realized I need-ed to move to a larger market, so I saved up about $3000 and moved to Lexington, KY, where I joined my brother. Then I got serious about the business.

Jason - let me guess. You moved somewhere else before coming to cville?

Angelo - I was in Lexington for about 4 years before I was recruited by another grout restoration business in Cleveland Ohio. I was very happy and honored to work with two guys who had built a successful operation. I worked for a Croatian named Steve Aleric and an Italian named Nino DiVincenzo. A Croation, an Italian and an Irishman. What a mix, right? These two guy’s really taught me a lot and were very good to me. I am still good friends with them. I was really starting to figure out the industry and also developing my passion for entrepreneurship.

Jason - Alright Angelo, now please tell me how you relocated to Charlottesville after Cleveland.

Angelo - I got married in 2006 and moved to Cville. Our son was born in 2007. I wasn’t exactly sure if I was going to get back into the business, but I needed income. So in 2007 I built relationships with some of the flooring stores in town - - Virginia Tile & Stone, Wainwright Tile & Stone, Carpet Plus, The Ceiling and Flooring Shop and Floors R Us to name a few. They refer a lot of work to us and I am very appreciative.

Jason - Tell us some more in detail about your services and exactly what you did.

Angelo - A lot of folks do not want mold and mildew in their showers and tub sur-rounds. Also, over the years wear and tear on grout can crack and caulk will need to be replaced. We can come in and clean the area with truck mounted equipment using heat and pressure. We will remove any grout and/or caulk that is in need of repair and replace with the right color. This process can usually be done in one day and you will just need to stay off the area for about 48 hours so the new grout can cure.

We also provide cleaning and color sealing service. We use the truck mounted equipment to clean and sanitize kitchen floors, bathrooms, hallways, basements, hotels, car dealerships, hospitals and just about any tiled area. Then we apply a water-based acrylic grout color sealer to the sanded grout joints. This makes all the grout uniform in color and stain resistant so it is much easier for the customer to clean and maintain. We can match any color. Customers really like this service. It completely gives the floor a face-lift.

We started adding carpet and upholstery cleaning in 2009. We use only organic cleaning pre-sprays. We were voted best carpet cleaner by The Daily Progress in 2012 and came in 2nd in 2011. I purchased a new truck mount unit in 2011 to insure that we are able to perform the best cleaning for our clients. I believe in using the latest technology and keeping up with what’s new and innovative in the industry. We strive to provide the best cleaning experience ever.

Jason - To what can you attribute your success?

Angelo - My parents instilled good values and raised me to go out and work hard and make an honest wage. My father taught me a lot about the sales process. I have been blessed with good family and good friends. Then there’s my son, Finn. Ever since he was born, I have pushed myself so I would always be able to provide for him. I have spent thousands of dollars on business coaching and self development. I believe one of the best investments you can make is in yourself. I also learn everyday from our clients. I am honored to work in some of the historic homes in the area. When they are happy with our work, it motivates me to keep on going and strive for perfection.

Jason - Who are your ideal clients and why should they hire you?

Angelo - Anyone who has a floor and bathroom...so everyone. Besides your house and your car, flooring is the 3rd biggest investment consumers make. So it is well worth taking care of.

Our clients hire us because of experience. I have been in this industry for over 14 years and, not to toot my own horn, I have became quite good at what I do. The few people that work for me are trained with the same systems I was trained on. We are also hired because of education. I, like many others in their profession, keep our certifications current. I believe in attending seminars and continuing in learning what systems and products can provide a better experience for our clients. Professionalism is the only way to go. I answer the phone or return calls within minutes. We show up on time for estimates and jobs. We will always go the extra mile. I am still present on about 50% of the job sites.

Jason - well you sound like you definitely are on top of things Angelo . I know you also do a lot of commercial work. What marketing do you incorporate into the business and how can people contact you to have these services performed in their homes or businesses?

Angelo - Yes, we enjoy the commercial work as well. Some of our clients are banks, grocery chains, ice cream stores, restaurants, clothing stores, libraries, government buildings, hotels, car dealerships etc. We spend some of our budget with Cville weekly. We utilize direct mail, have done some televisions ads, and email marketing, but I would say a fair amount is from word of mouth and the flooring stores. We are starting to build our Facebook page more this year. So if you like us on Facebook and mention this article you will get $50.00 off any tile & grout restoration job or $30.00 off any carpet cleaning job.

Our website is www.groutwiz.com. My email is [email protected] and our phone number is 434.962.6261Thanks for this great opportunity. I am grateful to the Charlottesville community for their loyalty and I look forward to making some new friends and customers.

My husband & I met while working at Martha’s Cafe, both students at UVa. We each graduated to other wonderful Charlottesville restaurants, and often talked about our own dream restaurant. It would be an integral part of the community for all ages, serve good comfort food from local purveyors, and be a home to customer and employee. It would combine our favorite qualities from our work experience, and constantly challenge us to improve, invent, and explore the world of food and beverage. After 5 years living in Wisconsin, we returned to Charlottesville (they always come back), and partnered with Mark Hahn and Rob Gustafson to reopen one of our favorite spots in town, Blue Moon Diner. Six years later, we are ecstatic to be here, continuing to develop our dream restaurant. Depending on the day, and sometimes the hour, there is a vibrant and lively culture of comfort and welcome that appeals to any who’d like to share a cup of coffee or a beer over a plate of sweet potato fries. We’d love to have you at the table!

Ace Contracting, Inc. Geoff Pitts, John Pitts, Jim Pitts, Tim Painter

It’s been a long time since Ace Contracting consisted of one brother driving a brown Pinto station wagon with a ladder tied on top....a lot of dues paid back then. A highly skilled friend once said he knew so much about his trade because he had made every mistake possible. There was a steep learning curve in the beginning but eventually the knowledge and skill outgrew the errors and frustrations. We became recognized as solid, reliable competitors sought out by clients and architects for ever more challenging, unique projects requiring the highest level of craft and ability.

We take pride in who we’ve become as a business--a stable, widely published builder and remodeler of diverse, interesting structures--providing shelter, beauty, function--well respected for craftsmanship, experience and honesty.

We also take pride in who we’ve become as engaged citizens--contributing money, time and experience to a wide range of community needs and efforts--with an emphasis on issues related to health, homelessness, poverty and social justice.

And after all these years, we still love to build. We still get a kick out of creating an interesting, beautiful structure whether it’s a small remodeled bathroom or a new home on a hill with a view of the Blue Ridge. We are energized by the challenge of an innovative or unusual design. Our passion for creative construction carries over into our private lives; all four of us, without exception, pursue our own personal building projects as avocations, using the same care and attention to detail that we give our clients’ projects during work hours. A screened porch, a deck surrounding a boulder, a jewelry box to surprise one’s wife--like the tee shirt says, “It’s Who We Are, It’s What We Do.”

-VILLEMeet Abbott & Co General Contractors.

For more on Abbott & Co… WWW.ABBOTTANDCO.COM

Blowing out of the gate in late 2011, these guys are on a tear here in town and people are talking about it. With four major projects under their belt downtown in 2012, including a new large high efficiency construction project in Belmont that is due to be completed in early April, it seems they are well on their way to earning a spot on the ‘short list’ of sought after firms. Abbott & Co. President (and C’ville native), Scott Abbott, believes keeping it simple is the key, “It’s easy to provide a high level of quality when you surround yourself with really smart and creative people who enjoy what they do. It has taken some years to put that together, but here we are… and we are really having a lot of fun doing it”. When asked what factors might have led to the success, Scott’s simple answer was, “A deep understanding that this is a team effort. Our culture is one that is built around it.”

Matt Ashworth, Lead Superintendent for the company, has contributed greatly to that success. Matt hails from Staunton, VA and graduated from Longwood Uni-versity with Scott in 1997. With 7 years of experience in large scale commercial work, and 9 years in the high end residential field, he makes for a great lieutenant. “Its been fun getting to know this town while tackling the projects we have taken on this year. From a 1930’s bungalow we recently completely renovated, to our latest new construction build here in Belmont, it’s been really rewarding. We have been blessed with some great clients.”

Originally born in Houston, TX, Scott Abbott traveled extensively as an army brat, spending his elementary school years in Baumholder, Germany. After his family left the military, they came back to their family roots in C’ville in 1989. Scott received his degree from Albemarle H.S. in 1992 and then Longwood University in 1997. Since then he has been involved in many facets of the residential real estate and development industry, including commercial & residential property management, subdivision & real estate development, and has held his real estate license since 1999. Scott holds a Virginia Class A with ‘Building’ designation, and attained the ‘Aging in Place’ designation from the National Association of Home Builders in 2006. He has been a member of the ‘Earth Craft Certification Program for Green Building’ since 2008, and earned his certification with the EPA as a ‘Certified Remodeler’ in 2010. Over the years, he has personally served as project manager for more than 25 large scale projects, including his most recent involvement in a 25 unit assisted living facility project known as RoseWood Village at Wintergreen.

When asked where do you guys go from here, Scott smiled and replied, “Keep doing what we are good at… producing really cool living spaces for our clients at a great value. I love showing people they can have a higher end product for what many others are charging for production homes. I would also like us to continue to help promote the green movement here in the City. Regardless of your position on the causes of climate change, we can all agree that our natural resources are finite. Building ‘green’ not only has a moral context, but it is also just sound business practice. If we can make a home more efficient, reduce environmental impact, and in the process create a home that is healthier and cheaper to operate and maintain…why wouldn’t we?”

“It’s easy to provide a high level of quality when you surround yourself with really smart and creative people who enjoy what they do.”

It’s all aboutAmerican-made.

Vivian supports people who work for themselves, doing what they’re passionate about. Most artists prefer making things to selling them. They love being in their own studio, enjoy the creative process, and take pride in the work of their hands. These aspects of our work life were once common, but have become all too rare. Everyone who buys one of these

handmade pieces contributes to this joy and supports our economy.

When Vivian moved here in 1996, she looked to rent space for her batik studio. Sticker shock convinced her to rent retail space instead. She added a gallery of other craft artisans’ work to her own production. Vivian’s Art to Wear, Art for Living was born. Today, her daughter, Rose,

and longtime employee Arlene Nash fill out the team.

Handblown glass, wheel-thrown pottery, turned wood bowls dominate the home side of the store. Unlike other craft galleries, Vivian’s also has a real clothing department. You find specialty designers making everything from Tshirts to formals. Vivian herself still makes a lot of designs in the upstairs studio, some in batik and some just plain fun. Great silver

jewelry rounds out the collection.

I have lived in Charlottesville for the past 11 years but I grew up in France and spent my teenage years in Tahiti - sailing, surfing, eating fresh fish out of the water, etc. After that, my family moved back to Paris and I started my cooking career under Alain Ducasse. I was in a very tough, very challenging and very demanding environment – and a lot of chefs become jaded from that atmosphere. When I look back on it now, I can see how my time in the islands, combined with my time under a 3-star Michelin chef have both really influenced the way I deal with work, with food, and my creative cooking process. I am very serious and very demanding about the quality of food and the vibrancy of the dishes, but at the same time we have fun, we are relaxed and we love life.

Where Did Brice Cook Before Tempo? Fleurie, Petit Pois (Charlottesville) 59 Poincare (Paris) London Club at The Aladdin (Las Vegas) Le Patin D’Or (Luxembourg) Le Guilleaume De Loris (France) Watergate Hotel (Wash. DC) The Willard InterContinental (Wash. DC)

Fleurie was a great first experience for being a chef/owner of a restaurant. I was able to take my experiences in European kitchens and create the classic French fine-dining restaurant. It was the right restaurant to open for a time when Charlottesville was really starting to bloom culinary-wise. I was at Fleurie as a chef/owner for about 10 years, and as often happens with chefs, my tastes developed and changed. I found myself wanting to create a restaurant that still offered the same quality of food and wine as Fleurie, but also was easy-going, more relaxed and had a fun, creative atmosphere. This is the concept behind Tempo. Many people think of ‘fine dining’ as something somewhat scary. Fine dining should not be like walking into someone else’s very fancy house and being afraid to touch the furniture - fine dining should be enjoying great food and wine with love, laughter, and when possible, champagne every day! I personally take great care in hand selecting each cut of meat, each piece of fish and the locally grown vegetables that we serve. To me, it is personal, and that is what I consider the heart of fine dining, and what I have strived to create at Tempo.

“We met at a house party at the University in 2006, and since then we’ve done everything together. Opening our gallery in Charlottesville is just a dream come true, and Telegraph is a piece of us.

J.R. Hadley moved out west after college to Lake Tahoe. The scene out there was heavily invested in local suppliers and organic/vegan food. JR and his two best friends, Andrew and John were inspired by the culture out west. Together they wanted to open a gourmet burger restaurant. At that time there were only a few restaurants in DC and in New York that were considered to be gourmet burger establishments. The three friends took their idea back to Charlottesville, Va.

In 2008 the Corner was going through a transition period with many businesses shutting their doors. With five months of renovations and changes to what once was know as “Orbit”, Boylan Heights was ready to bring something different to the Corner. When you walk into Boylan you feel like you are in an 80’s Prep School. It is a cool place to enjoy a local burger or listen to live music. They stuck with their plan and only use local suppliers, such as Albemarle Baking Company for their bread and Ryan Ford of the Organic Butcher for their beef.

Boylan is truly invested in their neighborhood and they cater to the University community, grad students, UVA Hospital, UVA Professors, and of course locals.

LEIt all began with a cart on the mall... ...that grew into a coffeehouse

...and a space for the community. We roast coffee for you!

In 1981 Quilts Unlimited began when Joan Fenton and her husband Albie Taback-man started selling antique quilts and lending them to magazines like Country Living. (in 1989 their home was featured on the cover of that magazine). By the late 1980’s there were multiple stores in 3 states, and the stores had broadened to carry new quilts, wood boxes, kaleidoscopes, glass, pottery jewelry, handbags and other contemporary American handcrafts. They became connoisseurs of the expanding community of artisans who were refining and often rediscovering the meaning of quality workmanship.

Today there are 2 retail stores in Charlottesville and 2 in Williamsburg, each with its own unique personality, mixing some of the finest American handcrafts with unusual gifts, clothing, jewelry, and in the Quilts Unlimited stores in Charlottes-ville and Williamsburg store, there is still a great selection of antique and new quilts. Joan personally selects every item sold in the stores, and they reflect her fine eye for quality and her love of the beautiful, the practical and often with a touch of whimsy, or (as she likes to say) her “warped sense of humor.”

We pride ourselves on the quality workmanship and the artisans we represent. We work with them to make special products for us, and for our customers. We strive to provide excellent customer service by helping a customer to find exact-ly the perfect gift, or item they are looking for. And on the whimsical side, we are probably the only upscale store to have a rubber chicken section featuring items ranging from rubber chicken purses to emergency inflatable rubber chick-ens. This year we are expanding our Pink Flamingo section. What’s the point of shopping if you can’t have fun?

After spending a year exploring Japan, Australia and New Zealand, I started Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters 20 years ago with a profound respect for the influence of travel in my own life and a determination to get more people out to explore the world. It was also an opportunity for me to return to Charlottesville, and my alma mater the University of Virginia.

Travel to me is about balance – expanding my under-standing of the world along with a desire to briefly de-part from everyday life. Sometimes it is hard to combine the two so I try to take some trips with a focus on seek-ing and exploring and other trips dedicated to pure re-laxation. I try to imbue this sense of balance in every trip I plan for a client and love the challenge of finding the perfect ‘match’ for the different stages in a client’s life.

I attribute the success of my business to many things but one of the most essential is that I work with people who are as passionate about travel and travel gear as I am.

Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters specializes in leisure travel, which includes vacation packages, honeymoons, cruises, family travel, and adventure experiences. Our goal is to provide clients with great advice and lowest price on air-fare and travel packages, as well as offer a full range of the best designed luggage, backpacks and travel accesso-ries on the market.

Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall is one of the centerpieces of Charlottesville, and it’s changed a lot throughout the years.

According to Charlottesville’s own local historian Coy Barefoot, the first idea for converting Main Street to a pedestrian mall in downtown Charlottesville came from the Chamber of Commerce on October 29, 1959. It took almost 15 years for it to become a reality.

Created in the 1970s and open to the public on July 3, 1976, the pedestrian walkway is now a tourist destination as well as a defining element of Charlottesville’s civic culture, revitalizing the City’s central core. It is bordered on the west end by the modern luxury of the Omni Hotel, and on the east end by one of Downtown’s premiere music venues, the NTelos Wireless Pavilion.

In 2012, the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects designated the mall as a “2012 Iconic Landscape”. Now thriving with diverse shopping options, the Downtown Mall truly offers something for everyone. Parking is easier than ever with most businesses participating in the parking validation program for the Charlottesville Parking Centers. Be sure to look for the CPC Shopping Bag to Park Free!

For 30 years, builder Bill Jobes has been crafting a reputation as a local leader in cutting-edge construction. He has truly pushed the boundaries for high-performance homes in the Charlottesville area. In fact, on January 1, 2012, Jobes Builders realized a landmark achievement—the first certified Passive House in Virginia. This Charlottesville home is so efficient that its energy costs are an astonishing $40 a month.

Now Jobes’ company is set to reach the next level of excellence. With the addition of two other seasoned building professionals, Paul Pyzyna and Mark Mandell, Jobes Builders delivers decades of combined design-build experience.

If you wanted a master’s hand at work on your home, you couldn’t do better than Pyzyna, a third-generation carpenter who started learning the trade at the age of 7. His resume boasts 16 years with high-end millshop Gaston & Wyatt, where he counted Monticello among his clients. Later, he helped craft millwork for the restoration of James Madison’s Montpelier. Now, with Jobes Builders, he lends his expertise to creating homes for the rest of us.

BUILDING THE FUTURE

Mandell, meanwhile, trained in design at UVA’s School of Architecture and spent a decade as a partner at Abrahamse & Co. Wanting to “get back into the heart of design-build,” his true passion, he joined Jobes Builders nine months ago.

The fusion of talent among these three pros can make projects soar beyond clients’ expectations. “We get the owner’s vision and put it down on paper, then make it better as we’re building it,” Mandell says.

Besides expertise in healthy houses and accessibility, the company is deeply dedicated to sustainability. While the Passive House was “the culmination of my career,” says Jobes, “it’s actually just the beginning.” He’s excited about creating high-performance standards that are specifically attuned to the local climate in Central Virginia.

For every Jobes client, that means quality. As Mandell says, “Our base spec is far beyond code-built homes.”

At the end of the day, these guys are just plain fun to work with. Pyzyna puts it this way: “Most clients invite us to dinner after we’re done.” Maybe that’s because of the infectious can-do spirit that infuses the team. “It’s an attitude,” says Jobes. “It’s an optimism.”

Southern Albemarle County has many treasures. The most influential in children’s lives is TRIPLE C CAMP! In 1951 the Baptist Church of Richmond started Camp Viewmont on the property now known as Triple C. Viewmont was originally an overnight camp for girls to get out of the city and go way out to the Country! In reality it was only five miles from downtown Charlottesville. 1989, the property was bought by Rick and Pat Charles. The Charles family changed the name to TRIPLE C CAMP (Camps and Cottages of Charlottesville) and turned the property into a traditional Day Camp serving the regions children as a summer recreation program. Meanwhile, Libby and “H” Rothenberg were Directing Day and Overnight Camps in the Midwest with a focus on Child Development. 1999, Libby and “H” Rothenberg purchased Triple C Camp from the Charles Family and have been at the helm since. The Rothenberg children, Eryn (21) and Ryan (15) have literally grown up at camp as the Rothenbergs have lived at Triple C for 14 years. Libby (Registered Nurse) and “H” (Teacher & lifelong Coach) have been in camping for 25 years and have a specific philosophy about camping and child development. Camp is non-traditional education. Triple C Camp focuses on character, relationship skills, and learning how to become a better friend using the camp facilities and activities as the vehicle. Activities like horseback riding, ropes course (high and low elements), sports, nature crafts, and daily swimming are all ways children (Kg-10th grade) grow at Triple C. “H” says, “The activities are great, and the key to the success of the camp is the staff! We have staff that are committed to making a positive impact with the children we serve. That’s when the magic happens. Our 20+ year old staff members build relationships with our campers and the impact that they make far outlasts the summer.” Libby and “H” have developed many programs on the grounds of the camp including birthday parties, retreats & rentals, and Charlottesville’s Challenge Course which is a team building ropes course program for school groups, sports teams, corporate groups, scouts and youth groups. Also, the Green Adventure Project started in 2009 which is a 501(c)3 serving schools and scouts with nature and science education. www.greenadventureproject.org

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HEALING PLANTS

Sacred Plant Traditions is an educational center for all things herbal. The classes we offer are geared for the beginner to the advanced practitioner. There are day classes in permaculture, growing medicinals, fermented foods and how to set up your kitchen apothecary. Aside from day classes and weekends with guest teachers, we have our Three Year Community Herbalist Program, which is acknowledged by the American Herbalist Guild.

“Charlottesville and the surrounding areas have responded so enthusiastically to all of our programs. “ says Director, Kathleen Maier. Aside from spending so much time with plants, the highlight of my work is meeting the people who are attracted to plant medicines. Students come from all walks of life and are inspiring in their own right. Although we are in downtown Belmont, one of our goals is to teach folks how to set up Botanical Sanctuaries in their backyards. Plants teach us about the sacred in simple, every day foods and medicines. How divine to know how to safely harvest and make your own elder berry syrup, echinacea tincture or yarrow healing salve!”

As a marketing major in High School growing up in New York City, I knew exploring the life of entrepreneurship was inevitable. Departing the city in pursuit of new experiences and academia, I found myself on the college campus of Norfolk State University once again as a marketing major with a minor in finance. From being employed by Goldman Sachs at the age of 16 to later landing a paid internship as the right hand of the Vice President of Marketing at the National Minority Business Council, a subsidiary of Phillip Morris, marketing seemed to have been all that I knew.

Starting my first business as a junior in college, an entertainment marketing company in 1993, I sit here today celebrating my 20th year anniversary in business. Promoting roughly 800 events including concerts, stage plays, college getaways, comedy shows, fashion shows, and much more were recognized in 1998 when I received the Entertainment Company of the Year award in Hampton Roads (Tidewater Area). At this time the company has grown outside of Virginia by expanding throughout North Carolina, Maryland, South Carolina and touched Atlanta.

Although I have specialized in promoting events for my own entity, I began providing marketing and branding services for others. From major record companies needing to “break” their artists, to the City of Charlottesville needing to captivate diverse support for its Celebrate 250 effort, I have provided a valuable service to many. I provide branding and marketing strategies for the private and public sectors under my Lifeview Marketing LLC brand. My clients walk away with a 6 -12 month comprehensive marketing plan which they can implement on their own or arrange for my company to oversee. I’ve had clients who were only considering starting a business and hired us to create business plans and provide marketing research information.

Currently, I own EcoGreen Dry Cleaning Concierge Service, Lifeview Marketing LLC, and am managing the career of the iconic R&B group En Vogue starring Maxine Jones. I joyfully sit on the boards of the Paramount Theater, the Charlottesville Scholarship Program and Play On! Theatre, as well as serve as the Membership Committee Chair of the Chamber Minority Business Council, because of my passion for giving back to a community which is extremely supportive of me as a person and as a businessman.

McGrady’s HistoryMcGrady’s Irish Pub was founded in 2006 by Lehigh University graduates Scott Roth and JD Pfile. Scott got his experience running their favorite college pub in Bethelehem, PA, named J.P. Mac-Grady’s and upon finding their diamond in the rough (what used to be Sharky’s Bar and Grill) on Grady avenue in Charlottesville, it became a no-brainer to keep the variation of the name of their favorite college hang out. Thus, McGrady’s was formed. After meeting his future wife, JD moved on in 2009 and now the pub is run by Scott, his wife Kristin, and occasionally their toddler, Evan.

A note from Scott - “We have been so fortunate to be a part of Charlottesville for the past 6 years. Our customers are second to none and while McGrady’s couldn’t have made it this long without our dedicated and hardwork-ing staff, it has truly been our community that has helped McGrady’s become Charlottesville’s neighborhood bar. To all of you who love great beer, cheese steaks, and our famous Sweet and Sweaty wings, we THANK YOU! Cheers.”

“do you like this?it 's just darling."

This was a common exchange between store owner Elizabeth Steel and her mother while shopping. Nine times out of ten, it resulted in purchasing said darling product. Which in turn led to an overflow of clothing in Elizabeth's closet, which in turn did not stop her from shopping. Wanting a way to keep shopping while not having to live in a cardboard box on the street, consignment presented the perfect solution. Sell the perfectly good and darling clothes you no longer want to help buy that pair of new Frye boots. (A girl needs boots!)

Darling is a current clothing consignment boutique offering popular and fresh brands. Think something you'd want to borrow from your best friend. Think that skirt you pined after from J. Crew two years ago that you didn't buy. Think getting rid of that cocktail dress you never wear so that you can buy that new one you've got your eye on. You’ll also find a selection of new jewelry, since no outfit is complete without a little something extra.
