Our rich history While the name Aviva is fairly new, our roots go back more than 300 years, making us the oldest continuously operating insurance group in the world.

Aviva companies have been involved in insuring many historic figures, from Sir Isaac Newton to John F. Kennedy, and paying claims after historic events, such as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the sinking of the Titantic.

These are examples of some of our more historic underwriting decisions.

Our support of your community We believe that by supporting the greater “you”—through both local and global community initiatives—we can better serve you. This belief most recently yielded our global Street to School program, an initiative that helps children living on the street get back into school or training programs.

Locally, many of our employees contribute their time and talents to a wide range of community organizations and, through our annual drive, make financial contributions to United Way and various educational institutions. Our Aviva Charitable Foundation then matches these donations.

Our commitment to the environmentOne of Aviva’s key objectives is to limit the impact our company has on the environment. We strive globally to reduce our CO2 emissions, water usage and the amount of waste added to landfills.

Sir Winston ChurchillAn Aviva plc Company approved the application of this promising young officer and presented him with a fully paid-up policy in 1960.

Queen VictoriaHer Royal Majesty asked an Aviva plc Company to be her insurer 140 years ago. The Company graciously complied.

Napoleon BonaparteOver 180 years ago, Napoleon Bonaparte applied for life insurance with an Aviva plc Company. He was turned down. The rest is history.
