Design Your Own Team Logo

A logo is a symbol used to promote public identification or recognition. Although they are simple, logos are created purposefully and use elements such as colour, line, shape, and font to send a message about what the company values. Imagine you just bought a sports team and need to design a new logo. Think about the sport your team plays and what values you want it to be known for… a quick and agile soccer team… a graceful synchronized skating team… a hockey team that cares equally about performance as giving back to the community. What would the logo for your team look like? Design your logo on paper or using the digital tool of your choice. Then write a paragraph to explain the hidden story behind your logo.

Checklist

❏ Logo is simply but thoughtfully designed (colour choice, symbols, font etc.)

❏ Paragraph explains the reason for your design choices (i.e. The blue colour represents…)

❏ Check for capitals, periods, punctuation, and spelling

Set up a Fitness Circuit

Athletes train their bodies hard in order to stay fit. Today, train like an athlete by setting up a fitness circuit. Choose six activities and number them 1-6. Some possible fitness activities include: running on the spot (cardiovascular fitness) push-ups (muscular strength and endurance), stork stand (muscular endurance and balance enhancement). Roll a dice. Complete the activity indicated by the number on the dice. Keep rolling, working through as many circuit stations as possible. You should spend 2-3 minutes at each station.

Questions for Discussion:Some of the movement activities may be new to you. Why is it important to try new things? What does it look and sound like when you are performing at your best when being physically active?

Activity Source: OPHEA

On this day we often hear the story of Phyllis Webstad. Phyllis' story is the reason why we call this day, "Orange Shirt Day". Phyllis Webstad’s grandmother took her to buy a new outfit for her first day of school, in the residential school system. Even though she was only six years old, her grandmother allowed Phyllis to pick out a shirt to wear to school. Part of the outfit she selected was an orange shirt. Excited about attending school, she wore the orange shirt with pride. She was to wear the orange shirt only one day at residential school – the first day. She never saw

her orange shirt again. It was taken by school officials. She was given a uniform to wear. “The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt, I was worth

nothing,” reflects Webstad decades later about her experiences at the Indian residential school. “All of us little children were crying and no one cared.” Phyllis, along with others First Nations children who attended residential

schools, were stripped of their own clothing and made to wear uniforms furnished to them.

What is Reconciliation? Qu’est-ce que c’est la reconciliation?

Reconciliation is a process of healing and restoring friendly relations – a process Canada is working

toward between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. For more than 100 years, Indigenous

children in Canada were required to attend government-funded residential schools, which removed

them from their communities and the influence parents had in the spiritual, cultural and intellectual

development of First Nations, Métis and Inuit children. The last residential school closed in 1996, but its

legacy continues to affect Indigenous Peoples today. In Indigenous communities:

● 40 per cent of young people live in poverty.

● They are six times more likely to be killed than anyone else in the country.

● They make up 48 per cent of all children in foster care.

● 39.8 per cent have not completed their high school diploma.

● 1 in 4 report that their homes are in need of major repair.

● 32 per cent of schools have issues with access to clean drinking water.

● Six out of 10 people age 12 and older are diagnosed with at least one chronic

illness.

Being aware of how you are breathing is one of the most important parts of mindfulness. Rowan Stringer loved rugby. A competitive and keen athlete, she was captain of her high school’s team.

Tragically, in May 2013, 17-year old Rowan died as the result of head injuries she sustained while playing rugby. In the

week before her last game, Rowan was hit twice while playing, likely sustaining a concussion after each blow. Her concussions went unreported, and she continued to play. Rowan suspected something wasn’t right—she texted a

friend about her condition and used Google to search for information about concussions. When she was hit again in her final game, Rowan suffered what is known as Second

Impact Syndrome—catastrophic swelling caused by a second injury to a brain still healing from previous trauma. Rowan collapsed on the field on May 8, 2013, and died four

days later.https://teachingtools.ophea.net/supplements/rowans-law-day-toolkit-schools/about-rowans-law/about-rowan-stri

In 2018, a new law called Rowan’s Law was passed in Ontario. It helps protect people who play sports, or play active games in schools, and helps teachers, parents/guardians, and coaches learn about preventing concussions. Rowan's Law also helps people who get concussions to recover. Have you ever bumped your head or body? Probably! We’re all at risk of getting a concussion but because some bumps can hurt our brains and our brains may need a lot of time to heal, Rowan’s Law was created.

Thanks to Rowan’s Law, all sports organizations and schools in Ontario will have new rules in place around concussions. Even when we do our best to prevent injuries there is always some risk. Rowan’s Law will help coaches, teachers, and parents/guardians, know when a child has suffered a suspected concussion, let the child know that they should immediately stop participating in physical activities, and be able to help the child identify when it’s safe to play again.
