Mother’s Day in Quarantine While the entire world is in quarantine, we are all

searching for creative ideas to celebrate this year’s Mother’s

Day. Some of you are heartbroken because you are unable to

spend time with your mothers and grandmothers who are in

nursing homes and care facilities, or even travel to see them.

We all had heartfelt plans for celebrating Mother’s Day.

Twelve students were preparing to receive Jesus for the first

time in First Holy Communion on Mother’s Day. After two and

half years of waiting, I was preparing to return home to India

and see my mother on May 18th. This year’s Mother’s Day is

also very special to me because my mother gave birth to me

on this day in 1977. Celebrating Mother's Day during a

quarantine is difficult for us all, but Mother Mary stands as

model of how to accept everything as it is. “Be it done to me

according to Thy will”.

On this Mother’s Day, three ‘mothers’ come to my mind;

First, my mother and your mother - and all others

who became a mother to someone in one or other ways.

Motherhood is not only a physical ability, but also the love,

care and sacrifice behind raising a child. Mother’s Day is all

about celebrating the woman who raised you and shaped you

into the person you are today. From all the packed lunches

with napkin notes, to the bandages and kisses after falling off

your bike, being the first one to cry at your graduation– your

mom was there for it all. It is important to thank her for all the

love and work she has put in through the years.

Second, Mother Mary. Mother's Day has been

celebrated as a national holiday in the United States on the

second Sunday of May since 1914. The devotion to Mary, the

mother of God and our spiritual mother, in the month of May

gives this holiday depth for Catholics that goes far beyond

giving flowers or candy on Mother's Day. "God, creator and

lord of the universe, chose to put himself — tiny, needy and

helpless — into the nurturing and watchful hands of a human

mother. Since then, every act of mothering — both physical

and spiritual — in every time and every corner of the world

recollects Mary’s" (Anonymous). Mary was the last and

greatest gift of Jesus to his beloved disciple and to the entire

Church. “...Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your

mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his

home” (John 19:26, 27). She was a silent witness for all the

sufferings her Son went through but for her Resurrection was

a Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day in Quarantine

Continued

Third, the Mother Church. The heart of the

mother church is aching without being able to worship her

Son with her other children. But she knows this time will

come to an end and her children will get together soon to

worship the Lord and that will be her Mother’s Day.

My dear mothers and grandmothers, though I miss

my mother at this time I am grateful for your motherly love

and care. What I can offer for you on this Mother’s Day is my

love and prayers. I miss you all at the church and I hope we

will get together soon. May the intercession of Mother Mary

strengthen us these days.

Wish you all HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY.

Fr. Binu Joseph.
