One person challenged the proposal but his comment was quickly passed over. Eighteen years later, in 1788 the bicentenary of European settlement was marked and there was a strong recognition of indigenous Australians. Now there is a debate as to whether the 26 th of January should be celebrated as a national day. In recent weeks there has been a good deal of discussion surrounding statues and monuments in our city. The statue of James Cook and the plague claimed that he had discovered Australia was at the centre of uproar. Every Western Australian knows that there were Europeans on their shores long before the English Cook sailed the east coast. What we choose to remember and what opt to forget. However the voice of indigenous Australia will continue to challenge us to forgive and not forget. Our collective memory can be very selective, as victors get to write the history. The same can be true in our individual and personal lives. In the business of life, I may well stop, say sorry and even ask forgiveness. But there is the tendency to just move on to the next thing. The healing of hurts takes time and, in the words of todays Gospel, calls us to come back again and again offering forgiveness in bucket loans. Very simply to forgive is to for – give. It involves giving, openness and humility. To forget can mean that we have not learned from the experience that called us to ask forgiveness. When we take time to reflect of what I said or did that called for forgiveness, there can be learning for our human development and spiritual growth. We might call it a commitment to the examination of consciousness, to listen deeply our inner self. When we deeply remember, rather than say sorry and move one just forgive and forget - then our hearts can be open to forgiving seven times seventy. ENTRANCE ANTIPHON: Give peace, O Lord, to those who wait for you, that your prophets be found true. Hear the prayers of your servant, and of your people Israel. FIRST READING: SIR 27:30 – 28:7 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PS 102:1-4. 9-12. R. V.8 The Lord is kind and merciful; slow to anger and rich in compassion. SECOND READING: ROM 14:7-9 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia! I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you. Alleluia! GOSPEL: Mt 18:21-35 Peter went up to Jesus and said, ‘Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times. ‘And so the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts with his servants. When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents; but he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt. At this, the servant threw himself down at his master’s feet. “Give me time,” he said “and I will pay the whole sum.” And the servant’s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him. “Pay what you owe me”, he said. His fellow servant fell at his feet and implored him, saying, “Give me time and I will pay you.” But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for him. “You wicked servant,” he said. “I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow servant just as I had pity on you?” And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.’ COMMUNION ANTIPHON: How precious is your mercy, O God! The children of men seek shelter in the shadow of your wings.

Dear sisters and brothers,

As I write to you, the national debate on same-sex civil marriage is in full swing. It is an issue that many feel passionate about and hence, it has potential to polarise the community. I appeal to all Catholics in the Diocese of Parramatta to conduct this dialogue with a deep sense of respect for all concerned, and for the opinion and decision that each person is free to make.

It is important to remember from the very outset that the postal survey is about whether or not Australians want the legal definition of civil marriage changed to include same-sex couples. It is not a referendum on sacramental marriage as understood by the Catholic Church.

Many years ago, divorce was legalised in Australia; but this change did not alter the law of the Church. Therefore, whatever the outcome of the survey or the eventual legislation by the government, the Church will continue to hold that marriage is a natural institution established by God to be a permanent union between one man and one woman, directed both to mutual companionship and to the formation of a family in which children are born and nurtured.

For many Catholics, the issue of same-sex marriage is not simply theoretical but deeply personal. These may be same-sex attracted people themselves or that may be the case with their relatives and friends. In such cases, they are torn between their love for the Church and their love for their same-sex attracted child, grandchild, sibling, cousin, friend or neighbour.

As your bishop, I wish to reiterate the commitment I made at my installation: “I am committed to make the church in Parramatta the house for all peoples, a church where there is less an experience of exclusion but more an encounter of radical love, inclusiveness and solidarity.” As a community of disciples, we seek to accommodate, accompany and care for one another irrespective of sexual orientation, marital status and situation.

Page 5: We acknowledge the Darug people, the traditional ...mqofblacktown.org.au/downloads/Blacktown-Parish-Bulletin-170917.pdf · Sunday, 17 Sep 2017: Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I invite all Catholics in our Diocese to exercise our responsibility as citizens to engage in this community discernment. It should not be a matter of a simple answer Yes or No to the postal survey. It should be an opportunity for us to witness to our deep commitment to the ideal of Christian marriage. But it should also be an opportunity for us to listen to what the Spirit is saying through the signs of the times.

Throughout much of history, our gay and lesbian (or LGBTI) brothers and sisters have often not been treated with respect, sensitivity and compassion. Regrettably, the Church has not always been a place where they have felt welcomed, accepted and loved. Thus, regardless of the outcome of the survey, we must commit ourselves to the task of reaching out to our LGBTI brothers and sisters, affirming their dignity and accompanying them on our common journey towards the fullness of life and love in God.

Let us pray, discern and act with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Catholics, in keeping with the tradition of the Church, are asked to exercise their consciences, ensuring that they are informed as they come to exercise their democratic rights in the coming postal survey.

Dear Ministers, Thank you for all that you do to support the ministry of the parish. For the vast majority of parishioners the one hour of Sunday liturgy is their major contact with Church. Hopefully good liturgy, with a spirit of prayer and devotion, nourishes them for mission in the market place in the week ahead. For myself, life can become very busy. Sometimes commitments clash and I have to ask Fr Denes or Fr Luis to fill in for me. The same can happen for them. Thus, if we are not able to be available for a particular Mass for which we are rostered, it is important that we ask another minister to fill in for us. In recent weeks there have been a couple of Masses where ministers have not turned up and there was no substitute. This led to last minute organisation and a degree of confusion. One Mass where I presided commenced some ten minutes late and with several things still not prepared. Good preparation that allows this most sacred hour of the week for so many of our people, is vital. So I ask that you do what I do if I am not available and that is organise a substitute. It is also important to arrive with plenty of time to prepare for the liturgy. To celebrate liturgy well we need to prepare well. So I remind Acolytes and Adult Servers to arrive at least 30 minutes before the Mass. Ministers of the Word and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are asked to arrive fifteen minutes before Mass begins. Music Groups are asked to arrive in plenty of time to set up and prepare the slides for the Mass, again, at least 30 minutes before the beginning of Mass. At a recent Mass, a music group arrived three minutes before Mass was due to begin causing frustration for the presider and other ministers preparing for that Mass. Can I also remind you of the importance of reading the Ministry Newsletter that is prepared and sent to all ministers each week. This newsletter is also available in all liturgy folders and on the noticeboard in each sacristy. There are always important notes to help us prepare for the liturgy to be celebrated well and to send parishioners out in mission for the week ahead. Again my thanks for all that you do to support the ministry of the parish. God alone knows the fruits of the week from the Sunday liturgy celebrated well. Our ministry is gift and a sacred responsibility. Fr Peter Confeggi PP 14th September 2017
