NEWSLETTER Williams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce2 - SUMMER EDITION

The Williams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce is proud to be the ‘Voice of Business’. It is my great honor to serve as the chair for the Williams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce for a second year. The past six months have been busy for the Chamber, meeting with many levels of government, community groups and businesses to help Williams Lake continue to be a vibrant and business friendly community. Your board and staff have been working hard on behalf of our members by developing policies that will impact the Forestry and Resource Development Sectors and our delegation presented those policies at the Annual BC Chamber AGM at the end of May. Policy development is our most important means to present the needs and requirements of our local members on the provincial and national government level. Many of our past policies are making an impact in our province and we are always happy to share what the Chamber is doing. Our local strategic plan has been reviewed and is in the process of being updated. I am always amazed and impressed by our local business community recognized at the Business Excellence awards. It is a fantastic showcase of what Williams Lake has to offer and recognizes businesses of all sizes and across all sectors.Summer is the busy season at the Visitor Centre and our knowledgeable staff is making sure to showcase what Williams Lake and area has to offer to the many tourists that stop in. I am looking forward to summer, working with the Chamber’s board and staff and to continue being the ‘Voice of Business’ in our community. I am proud to be a member of a strong and active Chamber that makes a difference.

As the tourism season is upon us we really need assistance from our members; we need to know if you have any events happening and in particular the tourism operators. Keep it simple, call, drop in, or email information on your business like events, special activities and/or things that would interest people to stay an extra hour or day at your place or in our area. The visitor information counsellors answer questions daily on our community and area, and the number one question is what should I see and do while I am in the area. So your information is vital to helping keep people here. To provide details call 250-392-5025, or go into the Williams Lake Visitor Facebook at www.tourismwilliamslake.com or email [email protected]. We believe the residents here were happy to hear that there will be a 0% increase in property taxes this year. There are lots of positive things going on and we look forward to seeing even more happening for our community. The BC Chamber and the Canadian Chamber work with local Chambers like us to foster a strong, competitive economic environment that benefits businesses of all sizes in all sectors across Canada. To meet this goal, they engage the government directly on issues that are critical to the Canadian economy. They rely on the work of local Chambers like us through our Policy committee. We are happy to say that our Policy Committee was successful in having our forestry policy accepted at the BC Chamber AGM recently. We also supported a number of resolutions that affect the majority of the province. One of the resolutions that passed calls for a dialogue towards a made in BC value added tax (VAT), and in the shorter term, measures to mitigate the damaging effects of PST. “Every extra day British

Columbia operates under the broken and archaic PST, we do our economy, our businesses, and our residents a major disservice,” said Maureen Kirkbride, BC Chamber interim CEO. Congratulations to Ken Wilson on being recognized so highly by the province in becoming a Fellow of the BC Chamber of Commerce. This was a tribute to all that Ken has done not only for our community but for the BC Chamber of Commerce as he served as their director for a few terms. He volunteered to travel to many communities in our region helping with chamber issues. It’s not too late to complete your census questionnaire (outreach continues until end of June). Go to www.census.gc.ca to complete it online. Enter your 16-digit secure access code and follow the instructions. If you received a census letter, your secure access code is located at top of the page. If you received a paper census questionnaire, your secure access code is located at the top right corner of the first page. Alternatively, you can complete a paper copy and return it in the green envelope accompanying the questionnaire. Complete your questionnaire today. It’s important! For more information, visit www.census.gc.ca or call 1-855-700-2016. Respondents who use TTY (a telecommunications device for people who are deaf) can call 1-866-753-7083. We are looking forward to some great events coming up in Williams Lake soon; Williams Lake Stampede and BIA downtown street party, ArtWalk, Harvest Fair, and many other volunteer lead initiatives. Show your pride, give of your time, get involved, participate, and enjoy what our wonderful community and region has to offer.

Mayor’s Message by Mayor Walt Cobb

Time continues to fly and now summertime has arrived in the Cariboo again! It seems to have started a little early this year but we will take it - hopefully we don’t pay for it until at least November.

Thanks again to the Chamber for all you do for our community. Where would we be without our valued volunteers, who are the strength and heart of our community? We cannot operate without your tireless dedication, which positively influences all aspects of our Cariboo lifestyle.

It is my pleasure to welcome all our visitors from near and far to Williams Lake and area. Just a reminder that, due to the early warm weather, please be careful with your campfires. Make

sure they are completely out. Forestry is our bread and butter and we want to make lumber for housing from those trees, not have them burned to the ground.

Williams Lake has many exciting events happening this summer including a Multicultural Pow Wow, the Elders Gathering, Performances in the Park on Thursday evenings, and the 90th Anniversary of our Famous Williams Lake Stampede. The

planning for these events is well underway, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of all of the opportunities to get out and enjoy these activities.

Summer is a great time to play in Williams Lake. Enjoy our first-class golf course, our exciting mountain bike trails and the many fishing and recreation lakes within minutes of our core downtown shopping area.

BUSINESS PROFILE Adventure GamesAre you tired of hearing, “there’s nothing to do” and “I’m bored” from the young people in your house? Send them down to 83c Second Ave in Williams Lake where they’ll find Adventure Games. This unique store and gaming lounge supplies all the fantasy games and accessories loved by gamers young and old and even has space available for playing the games. Dungeons and Dragons, Halo and Magic Cards are just some of the many adventure games available here.

Bryton Kaufman has owned and operated this store for two years now and he is enjoying his role in Williams Lake’s gaming community. Adventure Games supports the community by hosting tournaments in their Gaming Lounge and supplying prizes. In between tournaments, players can also spread out over the big tables in the lounge and enjoy playing adventures like table-top war games.

The customers here are great and Bryton has expanded into an on-line store in order to serve them even better. You can find them at adventuregamesinc.ca or even on Facebook. The gaming community in Williams Lake is small as yet, but it is growing and with support from a business like this, there’s no reason for anyone to say there’s nothing to do in Williams Lake. All you need is your imagination and a deck of magic cards or a board game.

Blocks R Us is a perfect place to spend a sunny spring afternoon. Their colourful garden centre, innovative planters and inspiring outdoor kitchen make this a great place to look, wander around, and plan your own yard makeover. For Mothers Day this year the outdoor pizza oven was fired up and happy crowds were fed pizza while they gloried in the colour and atmosphere at Blocks R Us.

Owner Fred Ball has been in this business for 22 years with different partners along the way. The community of Williams Lake has treated him and his partners well and he couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out. Fred and his current partner, Wayne, have expanded the business and added the garden centre three years ago.

Blocks R Us is located on the Soda Creek Road, just past West Fraser Mill. They are easy to find: turn onto the Soda Creek Road across Mackenzie Avenue from Glendale School and drive just over two kilometres until you see the big sign and the driveway on your right.

Blocks R Us carries concrete blocks in all shapes and sizes as well as topsoil, turf and mulch, hanging baskets for your garden, decorative rocks, planters, fountains and garden decorations. They are also a licensed manufacturer for Terra Force Retaining products and they ship all over the Cariboo and beyond. Last year, they even shipped products to Edmonton. Cariboo-area customers often come in from Quesnel and 100 Mile House.

Here you can come in and buy 1 block or hundreds. If you are a do-it-yourself’er, Fred and Wayne are available to give you advice and point you in the right direction. They’ll act as consultants and give you a demo, if you want one. If on the other hand, you are new to landscaping, Fred and Wayne will create your yard for you. They have been shown weed-covered lots and told, “Do

your magic.” You need to book them well ahead for that though, they are very busy.

The business operates year-round but it is at its peak in the spring and block making and installation are seasonal.

One of Blocks R Us’s biggest projects has been Williams Lake’s downtown Spirit Square. That installation helped them to win the Chamber of Commerce’s Manufacturer of the Year Award.

So whether you are upgrading a huge yard or lot, or you just need a couple of blocks to set off that flowerbed, come in to Blocks R Us and talk to Fred and Wayne. Your yard will be glad you did!

BUSINESS PROFILE IBEAsIan, Brenda, Eric, Andrea and now Sophia Hughes. IBEAs (the acronym formed from the first initial of each name) is a family-owned business that has been operating in Williams Lake since 2007. Andrea Hughes and her mother Brenda are the main partners involved in IBEAs quilting and fabric store while Andrea’s father Ian and brother Eric are silent supporters, behind the scenes. As for Andrea’s daughter Sophia, well time will tell.

IBEAs started in a small location at the very end of the strip mall on 3rd Ave downtown in Williams Lake. Every year the store and business expand a little more and now IBEAs is located in a larger location on the other end of the same strip mall. Long-time quilting customers and new customers looking for fabric, yarn, embroidery, cross-stitching supplies or even ceramics come into the store from all over the Cariboo region including Prince George, 100 Mile House and Bella Coola.

In addition to selling Baby Lock and Janome sewing machines, Andrea services machines, cleaning and repairing them both locally and as far away as Kamloops. Sewing machine maintenance and repair is a big part of the business as are the two-day in-depth beginner quilting classes that Andrea teaches.

The fabric sold in the store here is high-quality, quilt worthy fabric and Andrea concedes that quilting is an expensive hobby. It is also a very popular hobby. She is just back today, the day of our interview, from a quilt show in Prince George that drew visitors and vendors from all over northern BC.

A small, family-run business that just keeps growing, IBEAs has a very comfortable and supportive feel to the store and welcoming, bright displays that make even a non-sewer think she might like to learn how to quilt...or knit...or paint ceramics. Just watch out that you don’t step on Abby, the store’s little black dog

mascot. She is as much a fixture here as the fabric, the needles, the sewing machines, the buttons and the helpful and friendly people staffing the store.

Andrea Hughes is one of the partners of IBEAs

BUSINESS PROFILE Thompson River University (TRU)The Thompson Rivers University commencement was held on May 20th this year and there were 250 certificates given out to graduates amongst all the various diplomas and degrees on offer to TRU Williams Lake students. To say this university is kind of a big deal here is absolutely right. While higher education models haven’t changed much in the last 100 years at large universities, smaller universities like Williams Lake’s TRU can be much more flexible in meeting the demands of their communities. According to Ray Sanders, Executive Director of TRU’s Williams Lake campus, TRU prides itself on meeting the demands of Williams Lake and its outlying centres for quality higher education. TRU is specifically trying to integrate with the community and be responsive to the needs for post-secondary education, including all the trades and health services, in all outlying areas of our Cariboo-Chilcotin region. When it comes to local education, Ray’s challenge is to ensure that TRU balances costs, quality and access. In other words, anyone, anywhere can receive higher education for reasonable cost. As part of that effort, TRU has gone to what is called a “Block Blended Modality”, offering demand-oriented 6-week long courses which are available on-line and are interactive. This institution has a long history in Williams Lake. From its start as Cariboo College up on Hodgson Road through its time as the University College of the Cariboo, to its present reality as Thompson Rivers University on the end of Western Avenue and its partnership with the campus of Thompson Rivers University in

Kamloops, this is a campus who’s economic impact has always been large for its physical presence in our city. It is also a campus that is growing every year and shows a strong potential for including the larger part of its end of Western Avenue within its physical campus. With fourteen acres of land to expand into, the TRU campus at its full size would easily anchor the western end of the Williams Lake. An important part of TRU’s success is no doubt due to its emphasis on partnerships within the community. From trades diplomas to undergraduate degrees, TRU keeps a finger on the needs of our community and city and keeps on filling those needs. 250 happy, recent graduates can attest to that.

BUSINESS PROFILE Whispering Willows CampsiteThis quiet, friendly and small campsite is located on Highway 97 22 kilometres north of Williams Lake. Eight brand new, pull-thru and full service sites have been recently added to this campsite and in addition to the six sites beside the creek which offer power and water and the twelve tent sites, this campground is more than ready to serve your camping needs this summer. Washrooms and showers are available on site, as is firewood and the campground can easily host your family gathering, your company picnic, or even your wedding.

Whispering Willows is run by the Xatsull First Nation under the guidance of Community Economic Development Coordinator Miriam Schilling. The campsite and the nearby Xatsull Heritage Village work well together with campers able to travel the short distance between the two sites to experience something different from what most campgrounds have to offer. In addition, new Mountain Bike trails are under construction and a Facebook presence has been established to encourage more visitors to the campsite. The biggest new asset though, is that the new full service camping sites are pull-thru. A lot of Whispering Willows traffic is on its way north to Alaska in the summer and the “big rigs” like the convenience of this friendly little campsite that allows them to simply pull through the site of their choice, without having to back up or even turn around.

There is a campground host on site to help with any problems or questions campers may have and side trips to the Xatsull Heritage Village are easily arranged. Besides finding the campground on Facebook, the staff can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by telephone at 250-989-2311. The campground is expecting to be

full for Stampede this year and then again for the following Elders Gathering in Williams Lake but you can contact them at any time when you want a quiet, relaxing camping adventure for yourself or your family.

NEWSLETTERWilliams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce SUMMER EDITION - 11

Summer 2016Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Cariboo-Chilcotin, Williams Lake offers a unique mix of rural charm and urban excitement that attracts visitors from near and far during the summer months.

One of our best-known events, the Williams Lake Stampede, will be celebrating its 90th anniversary over the July long weekend. The Stampede will once again feature top cowboys from Canada and the United States for an exhilarating weekend of Canadian Professional Rodeo Association action.

For those who would like to discover the history of the Williams Lake area, there is no better place to start than the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin. This museum includes a fascinating look at our region’s ranching and cowboy history, and also features the B.C.Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Culture enthusiasts will want to visit the Xatśūll Heritage Village, located a 30-minute drive north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Operated by the Soda Creek First Nation, this village provides visitors with the opportunity to experience Shuswap First Nations culture first-hand. Visitors can try traditional meals, enter pit houses and teepees, listen to elders’ stories, and view ancient petroglyphs and artifacts on site.

Those who prefer to spend their days exploring the great outdoors will have plenty to do in our area. The Cariboo-Chilcotin offers numerous pristine lakes that are ideal for fishing, canoeing, and other water sports. Mountain-biking is also extremely popular in our region – riders can now download the TrailMapps: Williams Lake app on their phone to find the best trails in the Williams Lake area.

With so much to do in Williams Lake, it’s hard to know where to start. I encourage both visitors and residents to stop at the Tourism Discovery Centre, and start planning a perfect summer vacation (or staycation) in the Cariboo Chilcotin.

British Columbia took over as Canada’s economic star Thursday, with government figures showing it grew the fastest among 10 provinces last year while Alberta’s output fell to last place on lower oil prices.

Gross domestic product grew 3 per cent in B.C. in 2015, the fastest since 2006, on gains in real estate, retailing and manufacturing. Output in Alberta fell by 4 per cent on the energy rout, making it Canada’s worst performer. The oil-producing province had led a year earlier, when it posted 4.5 per cent growth.

British Columbia was also the top province in a jobs report recently; with its unemployment rate falling to the lowest in Canada for the first time in records back to 1976. The changing fortunes of the two westernmost provinces will continue this year, with economists surveyed by Bloomberg predicting Alberta’s GDP will fall 0.9 per cent compared with 2.6 percent growth in British Columbia.

Ken Wilson celebrated with

Fellow AwardThe BC Chamber, together with Chamber delegates from across the province, celebrated the tremendous contributions of the Williams Lake & District Chamber’s Ken Wilson at the BC Chamber AGM & Conference last week.

At the Chair’s Inaugural Dinner on May 31, Judi Ainsworth, a BC Chamber fellow and retired executive director of the North Vancouver and Qualicum Beach chambers, presented Ken with the BC Chamber Fellow Award. The award recognizes individuals who have given exemplary and outstanding service to the Chamber of Commerce network in British Columbia.

Ken was recognized for his remarkable service to the Chamber network, including 30 years of Chamber membership, 25 years on the Williams Lake & District Chamber Board, and more than three terms of service as a district director for the BC Chamber.

In presenting the award, Judi said, “The Williams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce, BC Chamber of Commerce and the community of Williams Lake should be thankful for Ken’s passion of Chamber work. May it long be contagious for all!”

WASHINGTON D.C. — The federal government is preparing to introduce legislation that will establish rules for a new border-crossing experiment that could change the way travellers enter the U.S. It will spell out the rights and responsibilities of U.S. customs agents working on Canadian soil, under the preclearance project recently announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Barack Obama.

The project will expand a system already in place for air travel — where passengers at major airports clear customs before taking off, and skip potentially longer lines in the U.S. Announced during Trudeau’s first official visit to Washington, preclearance is being extended to land travel with the first pilot projects occurring at train stations in Vancouver and Montreal. “We’re going to be aiming for a spring introduction,” said Chrystia Freeland, the Minister who runs the cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. relations.

Freeland said the new rules for land travel will be based on existing ones for airports. Preclearance is already the norm at eight airports and is being introduced in Quebec City and downtown Toronto. Under the 2001 airport deal, American agents can detain travellers in Canada — but it would be up to domestic police services to make a formal arrest. Also, American officers can be present for a strip search, but not when it involves travellers of the opposite sex. Other provisions govern the ability of agents to carry firearms.

“This is not a newfangled thing. We have preclearance (at airports),” Freeland said in an interview. “It works very well for Canadians, and that’s why we’re keen to extend it and formalize the structure a bit more.” Preclearance could potentially become widespread with people clearing customs at major train stations, bus stations and even off the side of highways

before they reach the border. Freeland said the governments are approaching it one initiative at a time.

The Canadian government has apparently concluded that the economic benefit warrants the costs. Canada will pay for U.S. customs infrastructure on

Canadian soil. “We’re ready to do that,” Finance Minister Bill Morneau told reporters during a trip to Washington recently.

“We want to have the best possible flow of people, goods and services. So making an investment in that regard would make sense. Every one of these specific decisions will have to be taken on its specific merits.”
