Real Estate, Health & Classifieds weeklychoice .com THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2011 SECTION B Beautiful Log Home on 11 Wooded Acres www.NorthernRealEstate.com  WELL MAINTAINED Featured Home On the Market Here are some tips to help you sell your home faster. By Ed Wohlfeil •A well-manicured lawn, neatly trimmed shrubs and a clutter-free porch welcome prospects. So does a freshly painted or freshly scrubbed front door. If it’s autumn, rake the leaves. If it’s winter, shovel the walkways. The fewer obstacles between prospects and the true appeal of your home, the better. •Clean up the living room, the bathroom, and the kitchen. If your woodwork is scuffed or the paint is fading, consider some minor redeco- ration. Fresh wallpaper adds charm and value to your prop- erty. If you’re worried about time, hire professional clean- ers or painters to get your house ready. Remember, prospects would rather see how great your home really looks than hear how great it could look "with a little work." •Dripping water rattles the nerves, discolors sinks, and suggests faulty or worn-out plumbing. Burned out bulbs or faulty wiring leave prospects in the dark. Don’ t let little problems detract from  what’ s right with your home. •If cabinets or closet doors stick in your home, you can be sure they will also stick in a prospect’s mind. •Homeowners learn to live  with all kinds of self-set booby traps: roller skates on the stairs, extension cords, slip- pery throw rugs and low hang- ing overhead lights. Make  your residence as non-per- ilous as possible for visitors. •Organize and clean out  your closets and storage space. It helps them appear open and large. This is a good time to rent a mini-warehouse space to store things you don’t need for a while. •Bathrooms sell homes. Check and repair damaged or unsightly caulking in the tubs and showers. For added allure, display your best towels, mats, and shower curtains. •For a spacious look in the bedrooms, get rid of excess furniture. Colorful bedspreads and fresh curtains are a must. •Turn on all your lights - both inside and outside -  when showing your home in the evening. •When a showing is sched- uled have a minimum amount of people in the home. Plan to be away from your home if  your real estate agent is show- ing the home. •Watch Your Pets. Keep them out of sight when show- ing your home 11169 Crooked Tree Trail, Frederic Listed by John Koske, Koske Realty Co., Gaylord (989) 732-1012 By Jim Akans The grandeur and solidity of a log home just seems to fit the character northern Lower Michigan perfectly . A well designed and constructed log home blends seamlessly into the wooded, rustic terrain of the north, and beckons as the ideal environment in which to create a lifestyle in harmony  with surrounding environment. This is just such a home and property. Set upon 11 acres of pine and hard-  wood forest, beautiful, custom-built l og home is the real deal. The design encompasses over 3,300 square feet of living space that includes two stories plus a walkout basement, providing ample room for the family with space left over for visiting relatives and friends. There are four good-sized bedrooms and three full baths, with a huge main level master suite, two bedrooms on the upper level, and one bedroom in the  walkout basement. The layout also includes a gorgeous main living area with a soaring cathedral ceiling and stone fireplace flanked by a two-story wall of  windows framing the outdoor views. An upper level loft overlooks the main living area and adjoining kitchen and dining, and the entire space features naturally finished log walls, log beams and posts, tongue and groove wood ceilings, and tile flooring with in-floor radiant heating. This is an absolutely gorgeous space. Other highlights include a game room and exercise area in the walkout basement, hardwood flooring in the master suite, custom wood cabinetry in the kitchen and baths, a fully finished attached two-car garage, and covered rear deck overlooking the breathtaking natural beauty embracing this home. Outdoors, there is a heated 30 x 50 storage building and an exterior wood furnace that heats the boiler for the home. Talk about cutt ing down on those utility bills! There are also several trails carved throughout the 11 acr e wood- ed grounds, and even an RV parking sp ace. This spectacular Northern Michigan retreat is located near Waters , Gaylord and Frederic, and while the setting is private and secluded, it also offers easy access to the I-75 freeway just a few miles away. Beat the rush—appointments avail-able now at Health Department

offices

Though summer just started, local public health officials areencouraging parents to think ahead to get children the immu-nizations they need for school year, especially adolescents age11- to 18. Appointments are available now at Health Departmentoffices in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties by

calling 800-432-4121. Medicaid and private insurance accepted;no one is turned away for inability to pay.

“Immunizations are not just for young children anymore.Thinking about shots for pre-teens and teenagers is new formany parents,” said Pat Fralick Director of Family & Community Health for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan.

“Getting kids protected againstdiseases, including meningitis,is very important.”

“Even though meningitis innot very common, it can bevery serious. Unfortunately, we see about one death a yearfrom the disease, in highschool or on a college campus.“Meningitis immunization isrequired statewide for 11- and12-years to go to school. Now,a booster dose should be given

at age 16. Adolescents, who

received their first dose at age 13-15, should get a one-time

booster, preferable at 16-18. That way, they will be protectedfrom disease when they are at greatest risk of contracting menin-

gitis.“Keeping track of your children’s immunizations can be diffi-

cult,” Fralick said. “Just call the Health Department or your

health care provider –we can check their i mmunization record onMichigan’s statewide registry and let you know if they need ameningitis immunization, or any other required immunizations.

For parents of students heading to college in the fall, Fralick recommends making appointments for meningitis immuniza-tion soon. “Since rules for adolescent meningitis immunization

Most cancer screening is designed to findcancer early when it can be easier to treat. But colorectal cancer screening can actually prevent the disease.

“Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.,” said JoshuaMeyerson, MD, Medical Director for theHealth Department of Northwest Michigan.“We can impact the number of colorectalcancer cases and deaths from the disease by increasing screening rates.”

The American Cancer Society recommendsregular colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 50. Meyerson says that can be difficult

for people who do not have health insurancethat covers the cost of screening. So theHealth Department is offering free at-homecolorectal cancer screening kits for men and

women age 50 to 64 from  Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties who areuninsured or whose healthinsurance does not cover col-orectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer is a can-cer that forms in the colonand rectum; these are parts of the digestive system through

which partially digested foodand water passes on its way out of the body. The diseasecauses no symptom in theearly stages, although abnor-mal growths called polypsmay develop in the colon orrectum. Most polyps are notcancer, but some may devel-op into cancer if they are notremoved.

The exact cause of colorec-tal cancer is unknown, although there are severalrisk factors that may increasethe likelihood of developing the disease such as age over50 years, presence of colorec-tal polyps, family history, high fat diet, smoking, cer-tain genetic alterations and apersonal history of cancer.

“Finding and removing polyps keeps people fromgetting colorectal cancer,”

Meyerson said. “By improv-ing colorectal cancer screen-

ing rates, we’re hoping to see fewer deaths.”

Call the Health Department at 800-432-

4121 to check eligibility and request an at-

home screening kit. Further testing may be

covered by the Colorectal Cancer Early

Detection Program. If needed, the Health

Department helps coordinate treatment with

local hospitals and physicians.

The Health Department of Northwest

Michigan is mandated by the Michigan Public

Health Code to promote wellness, prevent

disease, provide quality healthcare, address

health problems of vulnerable populations,

and protect the environment for the residentsand visitors of Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet,

and Otsego counties. To request an in-home

colorectal cancer screening kit, call 800-432-

4121 during regular business hours.
