there are few technical areas with higher complexity than modern data centers. for that reason it is all the more crucial that the multi-tude of components is ideally matched to each other. not only the active technologies require greatest diligence during the project planning. cabling plays a decisive role as well.

In context with the ever increasing demand for higher data rates the physical limits for the transmission links are reached more and more often. this must already be considered during the fundamental design steps for the data cen-ter. good, that we have so much experience and practical know-how. this helps you to keep relaxed – and us, too.


depending on the starting position and the environment the planning phase can differ significantly with regard to dimensioning and course of action. which special conditions do exist? Are we talking about expanding an exist-ing data center or building a new one? while e.g. the second case permits choice of topogra-phy to suit future demands without succumbing to attenuation limits of the transmission links, the first case requires consideration of the status quo. this automatically demands taking extensive critical inventory.

In any case it’s all about the most efficient cable management – between rooms and racks as well as within the racks. for this consideration of cable types and connectors, number of inter-faces, type of cable routing – top of rack or raised floor – and variant of racks and panels has to be taken into account. Absolutely crucial is the question of the desired degree of flexibility and the necessary headroom for future data rate requirements.

strUctUred ProdUct IndeXesAccording your briefing we set up extensive listings containing all to be used cablings. these represent the structure of your individual project and picture the perfect base for bill of material and subsequent data center documentation. Upon request even successive serial numbers of cables and trunks are already included to keep installation as simple as possible. And above that the direct link between each shipment and packing unit is ensured under all circumstances.

IdentIfIcAtIon And retrAceAbIlIty A key feature of the rosenberger osI logistic system is the systematic and detailed product labeling. each packing unit is equipped with a post-card sized, clearly legible label which not only states the exact product and detailed specification but also the order number with associated barcode.

even for the most voluminous projects this ensures that every cable and every trunk can be identified instantly without a time-consuming search or opening the packages. but this is only one of the reasons why we are the partner of choice for projects with tight time horizon.

the one-to-one assignment of serial numbers has another decisive advantage: the retracea-bility back to production and delivery. should any unexpected defect or undesirable change of product arise, the reason can be found at any time.

the rosenberger osI Preconnect® cabling sys-tem consists of pre-connected loose tube cables with up to 144 fibers – called ”trunk“.

Already in 1991, as first company, rosenberger osI introduced these innovative Preconnect® trunks to the german market. due to our long- term experience in the field of fiber optics and the continuous further development of our products, we still maintain an obvious techno-logical advantage to our competitors.

lens-contacts are characterized by a special connection technology which distinguishes itself from most other optical connector types by its special performance: lens-contacts are not sensitive to soiling and permit variable working distance. for this reason they represent reliable optical connection technology for harsh envi-ronments with high degree of environmental influence.

• the lens connector technology uses beam expansion as main functional principle.

• the light exiting from the end of the fiber passes through a spherical lens and is expand-ed to a beam of a 100 to 200 times bigger area. on the opposite side an identical lens concentrates the incoming splayed beam back to its original diameter and back into the fiber.

• In the proper connector area the signal is transferred by a comparably large area, without contact of the end faces. this effec-tively results in a significantly increased tolerance against dirt and reduces the distance sensitivity.

Angled PhysIcAl contAct (APc)

In optical fibers each fiber end causes reflec-tions of coupled light that results in signal at-tenuation and degradation. depending on the quality of fiber polish and endface geometry this causes aberrations with effects on data transmission. the APc technology – also called high return loss (hrl) – counters such inter-ferences. this guarantees for low-reflection connections and by this allows more stable transmission paths especially for high data rates.

• the fiber end is polished under a certain angle – usually 8°.

• reflections forming at the end of the fiber cannot spread anymore. reflected light is de-coupled from the contact surface of the fiber and emitted into the fiber cladding.

• the angled polish APc/hrl significantly reduces the return loss and interference by reflected signal components. the so-called signal to noise ration (snr) is significantly improved.

since its foundation rosenberger osI produces high quality connectors with angled polished fiber end faces. consequently that turns us into one of the most experienced companies in the field of fiber optics using APc/hrl technology. rosenberger osI not only manufactures solid ceramic connectors with APc faces but also successfully uses this technology for hybrid connectors of the heavy duty line. ferrUlePart of an optical connector which is used to fix and to align a fiber. typical ferrules are made of zirconia ceramic or precision mold plastic material.

fIbertransmission medium, consisting of a glass core and a cladding. signal light can propagate through the core material over long distances. fibers are protected by several layers and built into cables.

grAded IndeX fIber type of an optical fiber. the refraction index of the core has a parabolic profile. this causes a continuous refraction of the propagating light and limits the dispersion.

grAded IndeX ProfIlegradient of the refraction index. In a typical graded index fiber, the refraction index of the core decreases from the center by a parabolic function - see graded index fiber.

grP element (glass reinforded plastic element)component of a fiber optical cable. It supports the fiber and absorbs bend and tensile forces.

hcs fIber (hard cladded silica fiber)fiber type with a core of quartz glass and a cladding made of plastic material. It is also called Pcf (polymer cladded fiber).

hrl (high return loss)term which characterizes low reflective interconnections, also used for connectors with APc ferrule technology. Using angled polished fiber endfaces, reflected light is not propagated in the fiber core. distortion by reflected light is highly reduced.

hybrId AdAPtercomponent for connecting different connector interfaces.

Isdn (Integrated services digital network)communication standard for simultaneous digital transmission of several services like voice, video, data etc.

lAn (local Area network)data network covering local areas like buildings or offices.

lIghtVisible electromagnetic waves with a wavelength between 380 nm (violet) and 780 nm (red) or adjacent ranges like ultravioett (UV) or infrared (Ir) light. for data transmission, typically Ir light with a wavelength between 850 nm and 1550 nm is used.

loose bUffer fIbertubing which contains a loose bundle of fibers in a stress-less way. It can be with or without a gel filling.

reflectIonchange in direction of a wavefront. light is reflected when it passes the interface of 2 media with different refraction index. In fiber optic technology, usually reflexions in inter-connections should be avoided, because they can cause signal noise.

refrActIonchange in direction of an optical beam/wave due to a change of the optical density in a medium.

refrActIVe IndeXcharacteristic of an optical medium which describes its optical density. the speed of light in a medium is calculated by dividing the speed of light in vacuum by the refractive index.

retUrn lossloss of signal power resulting from reflections. the rl is defined as the ratio between launched power to reflected power and usually noted in decIbel. transmission systems are designed to have a high return loss.

rIbbon cAblemulti-fiber cable with multiple fibers running parallel. these cables have typically a flat design.

sAn (storage Area network)network in a data center.
