Head coach Billi Chambers is entering herseventh season at the helm of the Iona College women’s basketball program.
IonaannouncedtheappointmentofChambersas the seventh head coach of the women’sbasketball program in May of 2013. Chambers spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at VirginiaTechpriortothemovetoNewRochelle.
After an 0-3 start to the year, Iona defeatedGeorge Washington at the Hynes Center midway through November. A 20-game slidewould follow, spanning non-conference andconference play across a four-month period.The Gaels continued to progress though as aunitunderChambers,anditshowedwhentheytoppedMonmouthontheroadinFebruary.
Ionawouldenter theMAACTournamentonahighnote,topplingSaintPeter’sontheroadinthe regular season finale andmaintaining the10 seed in the league postseason. In the FirstRound matchup against the tournament hostSiena, theGaels pulledoff the upset over theNo.7seed,75-64.RiderwouldendIona’sseasonthenextday,butthefoundationforasuccessfulnextseasonhadbeenlaid.
TheGaelssportedoneoftheyoungestteamsinthecountryin2017-18.ToyosiAbiolacarriedthetorch, being named theMAAC Rookie of theYear unanimously. The MAAC All-Rookie Teamhonoree was a nine-time MAAC Rookie of the Week.Alexis Lewiswasalso named to theAll-MAACThirdTeam.
The Gaels finished the 2016-17 season with a18-13, 12-8 MAAC record. They entered theconferencetournamentastheNo.5seedandadvanced to the semifinalsbyupsettingSienainthefirstround.
AlexisLewisandMarinaLizarazuwerenamedtothe2017All-MAACFirstTeam,andfourstudent-athletestookhomeAll-MAACAcademicTeamhonors.
In2016ChambersledtheGaelstotheirfirsteverMetro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, taking down the top seededQuinnipiac Bobcats in the championship game toearntheMaroon&Gold’sdebutappearancein the NCAA Tournament.
Marina Lizarazu and Joy Adams were bothnamed to the All-MAAC First Team. LizarazuearnedMostOutstandingPlayerhonorsforherdominationintheMAACTournament.
InherfirstseasonwiththeGaels,ChambersledIonatoaprogramrecord26winsandashareofitsfirstMAACRegularSeasonChampionship.Her26winsarethemostbyarookieheadcoachinconference history.
In2013-14,ChambersledtheGaelstoahistoric18-game winning streak, the longest in school history.ShebecamethefirstrookiecoachtowintheMAACCoachoftheYearhonorsince1991and led all first-time head coaches in NCAADivisionIwith26overallwinsand18victoriesinconference play.
Forherefforts,ChamberswasnamedtheWBCASpaldingMaggieDixonDivisionIRookieCoachof theYear,given to thenation’s top first yearhead coach, becoming the first mentor inMAAC history to claim the honor. Chambers was alsonamedCollegeSportsMadnessMid-MajorCoachoftheYearin2014.
After finishing 15-15 in her second seasonwiththe Gaels, Chambers held a 41-21 overallrecord; the mark is the best of any coach inprogramhistoryduringtheirfirsttwoseasons.
In her third season with the Maroon & Gold,Chambers led Iona to its firsteverMetroAtlanticAthletic Conference Championship. Using her catchphraseofa“DefensiveStandard”,theGaelshadtheirbestdefensivescoringseasoninprogramhistory,allowingjust56.6pointspergame.
IntheirfirsteverNCAATournamentappearance,Chambers led the No. 15 seed Gaels in acompetitive74-58losstotheNo.2seedMarylandTerrapins.TheMaroon&Goldwerewithinsevenpoints with less than eight minutes to go.
