Machine Preparation

1. Park the machine on a flat level surface; lower the work equipment to the ground.

2. Raise the front loader arm to its maximum extend.

3. Secure the arm in the up position with the lift cylinder maintenance strut, also known as front end

loader cylinder lock.

4. Shut off the engine and cycle the controls to remove any residual hydraulic pressure from the

work equipment circuits.5. Engage the parking brake and block any tracks or wheels if necessary. Shut off the engine and

cycle the controls to remove any residual hydraulic pressure from the work equipment circuits.

6. Remove the key from the ignition switch until the work is complete.

7. Place a tag on the steering controls advising “This machine is being repaired. Do Not Start or

move this machine for any reason until this tag is removed by the repair person who placed it."

Remark

These instructions supplement the service data contained in the appropriate "Shop Manual."

Refer to that manual for Removal, Installation, Disassembly and Reassembly instructions when not

contained in this document.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1

There is a possibility the flex exhaust pipe part running down from the muffler to the exhaust stack will

be cracked or sheared. Said cracks more particular often occur on the connection of this flex pipe with the

exhaust stack (see next picture below). This flex pipe fatigue is caused by excess vibration of the muffler

bracket which this FC is set to eliminate. It is imperative that the technician inspects this part of the

exhaust system for exhaust gas leaks since serious damage can occur if major exhaust gas leaks occur in

this area.

In order to perform this inspection, open the hood and on the Backhoe loader’s right hand side the techni-

cian will find the flex pipe running down from the muffler to the exhaust stack (see pictures). Most cracks

have been experienced in the lower bent as shown in the picture. If an exhaust gas leak has occurred over

a longer period of time the inside of the hood and engine compartment will be sooth black.

If a flex pipe cracked recently, it may not be possible

to see a soothed area, therefore it will be necessary to

run the engine and find possible exhaust gas leaks if

they are not visible. In case of detection of small

exhaust gas leaks, such as a loose clamp, tighten theclamp, in case the flex pipe is broken or cracked,

proceed straight to “Section 4” of this Parts &

Service News.

WARNING! Observe all safety standards as dictated by the work conditions under which the

equipment will be inspected, reworked and repaired.

Consult the appropriate Shop Manual, Operation and Maintenance Manual, and your

Komatsu District Service Manager with any and all questions regarding safety.

Check the pipe connecting the turbo outlet to the

muffler for cracks. If any cracks are detected, go

straight to “Section 5” of this Parts & Service

 News.

When the engine is running exhaust gas systems are hot. When the exhaust gas system is hot and thehuman skin comes in contact with the exhaust gas system, serious burns to the skin will occur. Even after

the engine is stopped, the exhaust gas system as well as the engine will remain hot for an extended period

of time. Use utmost care when working around hot engines and exhaust systems and wear appropriate

 protective clothing.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2

This Parts & Service News handles two versions of engine. It handles the engines with and without the

wire tie support bracket.

Before beginning the work the technician should determine what version of engine he is about to

work on, with the wire tie support bracket or without.

The following pictures and explanation will guide the technician through the determination process.

The first 600 backhoes “WB146-5, WB146PS-5, WB156-5 and WB156PS-5” were manufactured with-

out the application of the wire tie bracket part number “42N-06-12211”. A running change altered this

and further on wire tie brackets “42N-06-12211” were installed on the engines. In order to determine

whether or not the bracket is installed, open the engine compartment hood and walk to the left hand side

of the machine, the side were the injection pump is located on the engine. Look at the injection lines run-

ning next to the valve covers and look if the wiring harness is tied to the injection lines (see Picture 1). Ifthis is the case, proceed to “Section 1” of this Parts & Service News and follow the directions for the

installation of the muffler strut of that section.

  Typical Example

Note how the bolt head has vanished from the bolthole. The bolt actually

sheared and the technician will find thethreaded part still in the bolt hole.Remove the remaining part of the bolt.

Picture 1.

The picture shows how the wiring harness is

wire-tied to the injection line.

If no wiring harness is tied to the engine fuel

injection lines, then the engine is equipped

with a wire tie bracket part # 42N-06-12211

to which the wiring harness is tied. This will

look as shown on the picture below (see pic-

ture 2). If the engine is equipped with a wire

tie bracket part # 42N-06-12211, proceed to

“Section 2” of this P&SN.

Picture 2.

The picture on the right shows the wiring

harness tied to the wire-tie bracket part num-

 ber 42N-06-12211.

Section 1.

Muffler Support Assembly and Lower Bracket removal.

Before removing the Muffler Support and Lower Bracket

from the engine, remove the heat shield above the muffler for

easy access to the muffler assembly.
