A warm welcome to Oslo, Norway's Capital With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is found at the end of one of Norway's most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of just over 570 000 inhabitants, and is the nation's financial, politi-cal and cultural centre. If you allow yourself the time to wander in the city's streets, parks, forests and along the beaches, you will get a feel for the capital's abundant history in it's character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city's inhabitants and buildings and the people's rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and the vast forests. Oslo is the city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cul-tural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the world. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide.Useful information may be found on www.visitoslo.com. Also, we are proud to offer visitors two tourist information centres in our city, one of which is open 365 days a year. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our city. You will find a city filled with plenty of surprises and excitement. We hope you will discover many of them!

Welcome to Oslo!

Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944) is a world-renowned artist. He is considered a pioneer of expressionism, and has had a great impact on the development of modern painting. The intellectual and artistic environment in Kristiania (Oslo) was important for Munch’s development. In the 1890’s he painted some of his masterpieces such as Scream, Ma-donna, Jealousy, Separation and Kiss. The repeating themes were often love, anxiety and death, and depict the artist’s own emotional experiences. These motifs are also central in the so-called Frieze of Life, a series of motifs that he worked on his whole life. Munch was an inventive graphical artist and his works in the aula of the University of Oslo also show Munch’s skills when it comes to large decorative works of art.Munch spent long periods of his life in Germany and France and it was there that he got his international break-through in the early 1890’s. After a nervous breakdown, Munch moved back to Norway in 1909. He never fathered any children, but he is known to have said that his paintings were his children. The Munch Museum was opened in Oslo in 1963 and includes 1100 paintings, 3000 drawings and 18000 graphical prints. In his will, Munch gave the collection to the City of Oslo. Two years after their brutal robbery, the paintings Scream and Madonna were returned to the museum in 2006. A large collection of Munch’s paintings are on display in the Na-tional Gallery.Scream In his memoirs, Edvard Munch relates Scream (1893) to a specific experience – a walk with friends at sunset in the Ekeberg hills in Oslo. Scream is an expression of Man’s desperation and anxiety, connected to existential insecurity. Mankind is on its way to-wards a new and frightening Century, abandoned by God, who Nietzsche in 1872 had declared dead. Because of its powerful expressional force, the painting has become one of the world’s main icons in art history.

Facts and history

There are some doubts as to the meaning of the name of Oslo. Researchers agree that the term “Os” can be understood as either a long and narrow hill or as a reference to a pre-Christian God. The second half of the name, “Lo”, generally refers to a field. Hence the ancient name of Oslo may either mean “the field below the hill” or “the field of the Gods”. The first signs of urban settlements date back to around the year 900 and by the year 1300 Oslo was already an important trade centre. After the great fire in 1624 the Danish King Christian IV rebuilt the city and renamed it Christiania. At the beginning of the 19th century, the city was still the size of a small town, but its population began to grow rapidly with the mid-19th century economic surge. In the period from 1850 to 1900 the population increased from a mere 30 000 to 220 000 inhabitants. When Norway gained independence in 1905, national awareness increased and this sentiment led to a Parliamentary Decree renaming the city Oslo in 1925.Oslo is presently going through the biggest changes it has seen for decades. The city continues to grow in population and the building of new housing, business properties and recreational areas along the harbour is in full progress. The new Opera house is already one of Norway’s most vis-ited attractions. Today Oslo boasts a larger selection of museums, shopping, restaurants, festivals, nightlife and entertainment than ever before.

Great skiing and the world’s best after-ski!Oslo is the only major city in Europe that can offer great skiing just minutes away from the city centre by underground train. Why not try a city break out of the ordinary, where you can com-bine a winter sport holiday with pulsating nightlife, world famous museums and attractions, great shopping and high-class cuisine. Oslo Winter Park Tryvann is located only 20 minutes from the city centre. The slopes are normally open from early December to Easter. In addition to alpine slopes, there is also an international standard half-pipe for snow-boarders, as well as a terrain park with moguls and jumps. Floodlighting allows skiing until 10 pm during weekdays.More than 2600 km (1600 miles) of prepared cross country ski-trails run deep into the forests of Oslo, some of which are floodlit until 10 pm for the special experience of evening skiing. Skiers can stop for food and refreshments at a choice of 68 picturesque cabins. If skiing is not your forte, try the ice skating rink at Narvisen in the city centre or at Frogner Stadium.

Christmas in OsloEnjoy Christmas shopping in Oslo in December! The city centre and the main high street Karl Jo-hans gate is beautifully decorated and the Christmas tree outside the old university is lit on the 1st day of Advent. The Christmas Fair at the Norwegian museum of cultural history is open on the first two Saturdays and Sundays of December. The market is very popular with locals and tourists alike. The Santa workshop, horses and sleighs, concerts and folk-dancing are only some of the activities available to children and adults. Christmas services are held in the 12th century stave church. At Bogstad Manor the main building is decorated for the festivities according to 19th century traditions, and at Bærums Verk the old workers’ houses have been converted into small shops selling weaving, hand blown glass, pottery, handicraft and designer goods. The majestic Akershus fortress, Aker Brygge harbour and the Oslo fjord create a beautiful frame around the City Hall square, which in the days before Christmas is filled with concerts, Christmas trees, handicraft, Christmas decorations and traditional Norwegian Christmas food.

Oslo - an outdoor summer paradiseOslo is a fantastic city to visit during summer. Try a refreshing dip in the water from one of the many islands or beaches only minutes away from the city centre by public transport. Due to the Gulf Stream a swim in the Oslo fjord can be surprisingly pleasant with water temperatures up to 23 degrees Cel-sius! Not to be missed is a sightseeing tour by boat. A lunch cruise or an evening cruise in an old traditional sailing ship is truly a unique experience popular with locals and tourists alike.Only 15 minutes away from the city’s water front, you can enjoy hiking in the idyllic Oslo forest. Sign-posted hiking trails will help you find your way and most of the trails are also accessible for mountain biking. Should you need to cool down, you can stop for a swim in one of the many picturesque lakes. You don’t have to go to the countryside to find greenery as there are plenty of parks in the city centre with charming cafés and bars with outdoor seating round every corner. For a walk around the city neighbourhoods, we highly recommend the area behind the Royal Palace. For people-watching and a fresh sea breeze, go to Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen harbour. Here you will find an abundance of restaurants and bars where you can sit outside enjoying the bustling nightlife into the long hours of the bright summer night.

Every year in Oslo there is a large choice of festivals to please any taste. The early spring brings both the classical tunes of the Oslo International Church Music Festival and the heavy sounds of the Inferno metal festival. Established as well as young up and coming Norwegian designers display their work during the Oslo Fashion Week which takes place twice every year in the spring and late summer. The main event of the year is Norway’s National day, the 17th of May. Celebrations take place all over the city with the Royal Palace as the centre of attention when the Royal Family comes out on the balcony to greet the crowds of cheering children and adults dressed up in their best outfits. In June the Norwegian Wood festival gathers national and international rock musicians and thousands of spectators to concerts in the Frogner park. Another event in June is the Oslo Gay Pride festival which is a popular event among people of all sexual orientations. In August children and youth meet at Ekeberg for the World’s largest football tournament - Norway Cup. Amongst the ruins of Medieval Oslo more than 40 000 music lovers enjoy the outdoor rock festival Øyafes-tivalen, and for those who enjoy other types of music, August also offers the Oslo Chamber Music Festival and the Oslo Jazz Festival. Autumn is the time for the Oslo Marathon and the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival. In December experience the Christmas spirit in Oslo city centre with the lighting of the Christmas tree and opening of the Christmas street. Oslo has nightlife, shopping, restaurants, great nature and a variety of cultural offerings, in addition to an open and including gay scene. The Norwegian society is, generally speaking, liberal towards the gay community. Norway has several gay public figures, in entertainment and sports as well as in politics and business. In 2008 Norway introduced a gender neutral Marriage Act.

nightlifeGay couples can go to the restaurant or bar of their choice – they do not need to go to a place es-pecially for gays. However, there are of course places where you are more likely to meet other gays and lesbians, mainly in the city centre. Oslo's gay nightlife is not as segregated as in many other cities; gays and lesbians often go to the same places, and different age groups mix. In addition to the designated gay bars like London and Elsker, there are also other places with many regular gay guests, such as Ett Glass and Bobs pub.

Oslo has a colourful and exciting cultural scene offering something for all ages. Music, theatre and art exhibitions are available all year. World class opera and ballet performances take place in the new Opera house, which opened in April 2008 and is already one of Norway’s most popular at-tractions. Oslo Concert Hall is home to the renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and they hold regular performances here. There is also a great choice of other musical genres: international pop and rock stars frequently visit Norway’s largest indoor arena Oslo Spektrum while the historic con-cert hall Gamle Logen hosts intimate chamber music and jazz concerts. For an evening with din-ing and entertainment, a dinner show at Wallmans Salonger is an excellent choice. Theatre lovers can experience everything from experimental theatre in small venues to large productions at the National Theatre. Dance House Norway, Oslo’s only stage devoted to dance, opened recently in an up and coming area by the Aker River. DogA – the Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture is also found here. Cinemas in Oslo always show their films in the original language, making them accessible to a broad audience. Clothes and Designer Goods have become more and more of a trade mark for Oslo. There is a great selection of interesting shops which can compete with the trends in cities like London, Berlin and New York. Many young designers have their base in Oslo, and their work is getting a lot of attention both in Norway and internationally. In addition to designer shops, there is, of course, a wide variety of department stores, small boutiques, shopping areas with individual shops, charming antique shops, flea-markets, exclusive international brands and local handicraft.

the city centre Along the main street of Karl Johans gate, you will find most of the high street shops like H&M, Mango and Zara and some of Oslo’s biggest shopping centres such as Paleet, Byporten and Oslo City. Akersgata has over the past year become a very exclusive shopping street – Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton, Gaia and Moods of Norway are amongst the shops that have opened here. In the city cen-tre there are also some more traditional department stores like Christiania Glasmagasin and Steen & Strøm. By the harbour at Aker Brygge there is a great choice of shops, bars and restaurants and in the summer time the harbour is always bustling with life. Near Aker Brygge you will find House of Oslo – Norway’s largest department store specializing in interior design.

Majorstua and Frogner Behind the Royal Palace towards the Vigeland Park is the beautiful area of Frogner and Majorstua with its popular shopping streets Hegdehaugsveien and Bogstadveien. Here you will find a good mix of exclusive designer clothing and high street fashion. Bislet area nearby offers many small boutiques such as Pur Norsk, Jane Doe, Eske and Team Kameleon. In Frogner, Bygdøy Allé and Skøyen further west there is a good choice of exclusive clothes shops as well as design and fur-niture shops.

GrünerløkkaA former working-class area by the Aker River, it has over the past decade become one of Oslo’s most interesting areas where you can discover little treasures in clothing, ceramics, music, art and food. Stroll along the main streets Thorvald Meyers gate and Markveien and find that special item for yourself or someone else in shops like Probat, Shoe Lounge, Granit, Veloura Vintage or Robot.

Oslo is Norway’s capital and largest city, which is particularly evident in its great selection of res-taurants, cafés, bars, clubs and cultural institutions. Each neighbourhood has its unique charm and offers something for every taste: the area around the main street Karl Johan and Aker Brygge harbour with its continental flair, Frogner and Solli plass with its elegant bars and clubs, the “see and be seen” streets of Bogstadveien and Hegdehaugsveien, charming Bislet and St.Hanshaugen, the rock-chic style of Yongstorget and Møllergata or the relaxed and multicultural atmosphere of Grünerløkka and Grønland.

restaurantsNorway is traditionally known for specialities based on local ingredients such as fish and seafood, particularly salmon, cod, herring and shrimp. Mutton, Moose and Reindeer prepared in various ways are also often served. The culinary traditions are strong, and Norwegian chefs have a good international reputation having won a number of recognised awards. Many of these chefs work in some of Oslo’s excellent restaurants, whereof as many as six have received the much sought after Michelin star. Whatever your taste or price range, in Oslo you can find food from all over the world.

nightlifeOslo’s nightlife is anything but boring. Discover the pulsating and inviting atmosphere of the countless bars, cafés and nightclubs. Oslo’s party animals quickly pick up the latest international trends or make their own. DJ’s from all over the world help keep the action and mood going in the city’s bars and nightclubs, and there are also a large number of places that offer live concerts. Oslo also has a very reputable jazz scene. All restaurants, bars and nightclubs in Norway are smoke-free indoors, but many have outdoor tables during summer, and in the winter many places have outdoor heaters.www.visitoslo.com/en/nightlife

Akersberget restaurant is situated below Old Aker Church, and according to the saying, the church rests on four pillars of solid gold. Below the church, there is supposed to be a lake of silver where golden ducks swim around. A fire-breathing dragon guards the lake, the ducks and enormous treasures. Here, in a unique atmosphere in one of Oslo’s most historical sites, Akersberget offers a modern Nordic menu based on local produce and inspired by old Scandinavian culinary traditions.

Amundsen & Nobile is the only original and genuine trattoria Italiana in Oslo (dedicated to the memory of the two polar ex-plorers and heroes). Amundsen & Nobile offers their customers the best wines and homemade food from the Southern part of Italy. In fact the owners and chefs are Italian. The staff is either Italian or speak the language fluently. The owner enjoys singing Italian “canzoni”. The dishes are mainly from the Napoli and Puglia region. The wine list is carefully selected.

Beach Club gives the guests a sense of entering an American diner from the 50’s. Beach Club has a long, typically American bar with a good view of the entire place. The restaurant is popular with hungry, busy business people, artists and musi-cians. We have reason to believe that there is more to this place than good hamburgers... Beach Club is well-known for the hand made supergood hamburgers (meat/ chicken/ fish). Great drinks and an un-Norwegian atmosphere with booths. On sunny summer days, the outdoor area at Beach Club is a pleasurable, pulsating and sunny experience.

Big Horn Steak House is Norway’s leading beef restaurant. We are an American-inspired steak-house, and take pride in keep-ing with the genuine steak-house tradition – with its traditional and informal atmosphere, professional service and tender, juicy steaks. We would like to welcome you to our great premises and an unforgettable meal!

A little piece of France in Oslo! Oslo’s only genuine French brasserie, is centrally-located by Egertorget. We serve classical French dishes such as Bouillabaisse and Confit de Canard and a reasonable “Menu Touristique”. Our outdoor restaurant and kitchen with generous opening hours, can promise you an informal and exceptional brasserie-atmosphere at most hours of the day and night, on every weekday. We can offer separate rooms for groups. French food and wine on four floors! A bientôt!

Opposite the Parliament, the Free Masons’ building is located in Nedre Vollgate 19. Café Christiania can accommodate 300 guests, and during the summer season 150 guests can be catered for on the roof terrace “Folketinget”, which also features a separate grill menu. The restaurant manifests the country’s and Oslo’s history from the first half of the last century. This is mirrored in the restaurant’s interior, which itself is like a museum. We wish to create a living restaurant atmosphere for a quick cup of coffee, Christmas dinner with colleagues, dinner with family or important business relations.

Café con Bar is a modern and lively bar in the middle of the city centre, right behind Oslo City. We can offer an exciting bar section and a pleasant and relaxing lounge. Let your hair down and take a well deserved break. The bar has a good selection of hot and cold drinks. The clientele is complex, ranging from business people to musicians. There is low comfortable background music.

Druen can be found at the entrance to Aker Brygge, and is a restaurant for all occasions. Have a glass of wine in our outdoor restaurant which has the city’s greatest view towards Akershus fortress and the Oslo fjord, or enjoy a dinner inside in front of the fire place. Our wine bar offers an extensive range from all over the world, either by the glass or by the bottle. In our new enotheque you can try wines you had never dreamt of tasting. We offer many interesting wine events and happenings. You may sit down for a drink only. We serve food until midnight and are open every day. Welcome!

Kr 149,- for Pronto menu, including food, a cold drink of your choice and coffee. If you are in a hurry, you may pay for the meal when you order at your table, and you can take your coffee to go.

The Ekeberg Restaurant is ideally situated in the Ekeberg hills, with a fantastic view of the city and the fjord. The listed “Funkis style” building from 1929 was re-opened in 2005 after a total renovation. The house consists of an à la carte restaurant, chamber separée, functions and conference facilities, bars and a lounge. In the Summer, our outdoor restaurant can boast evening sunshine and we serve gourmet food on our enclosed glass verandah on the first floor. The kitchen is international, and combines the modern with the classical. The view, the architecture, the interior and the overall quality makes the place a true experience.

We wish you a warm welcome to a pleasant meal in our charm-ing, historical and traditional building. The ambiant theatre scene around Bankplassen square in the 19th century, created a need for a meeting place for actors and others. 151 years later, Engebret’s popularity is as great as ever. Most of Norway’s famous actors and artists have had and still have a relationship with Engebret Café, and Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Edvard Grieg and Edvard Munch all had their regular tables at Engebret Café.

The surrounding region of Oslo consists mainly of the fjord, lakes and forested hills, and can of-fer great alternatives to the big city. An extensive road system and public transport make the attractions in the region easily accessible.

North of oslo you will find thousands of signposted hiking trails, and historical names such as Romerike and Nittedal. Further up the Randsfjord are numerous Viking sites and a visit to the region would not be complete without a visit to Hadeland Glassworks. 30 minutes north of Oslo, Varingskollen alpine resort can offer the best terrain park in the region.

Southwest of oslo, you find Bærum, Askerlandet, Hurum and Røyken with a beautiful archipelago consisting of hundreds of small islets, most of which are protected nature reserves. You will find continous hiking-trails along most of the coastline, Skaugum, the residence of the Crown Prince and Princess, Henie Onstad art centre, Bærums Verk and Scandinavia’s largest shopping mall Sandvika Storsenter.

Southeast of the city, you find some of Oslo’s inhabitants’ own favourites. In the summer time, many of the public beaches and islands are accessible by public ferry boats. Visit Norway’s largest amusement park, Tusenfryd or charming Drøbak with its famous Christmas House – both of which are short bus trips from Oslo City Centre.

OSLO CruISE HarBOurOslo is one of Norway’s most popular cruise destinations and the technically-advanced harbour area can receive port visits all year round. The ships dock by Akershus Fortress in the City Centre. The Fortress is more than 700 years old, and is an excellent starting point when exploring Oslo. From the harbour you can see the City Hall, the Nobel Peace Centre with Oslo’s green hills in the background. A walk along the quai to Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen is highly recommended, as you will find restaurants, cafés and shops. In front of the City Hall or from Aker Brygge, you can take a tram (direction Majorstuen) to the famous Vigeland sculpture park. From Rådhuskaia (quai) there are several sightsee-ing trips, by boat or bus, to choose from and the museum peninsula of Bygdøy is only a 10 minute ferry ride away.

VisitOSLO is a member of Oslo Cruise Network and Cruise Baltic, a collaboration for quality between cruise destinations in Northern Europe.
