response times for police and sheriff’s departments vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. It is vital that staff and congregation members know how to respond, and what their roles are, dur-ing a violent encounter. This training is designed to provide awareness to those persons with important roles in the safety and security of their place of worship. Training topics covered include: Defining an active shooter and learning about their behavior, considerations for security and response plans, key decision factors that will help guide the response of staff and congregation members, and other important considerations. The instructor, Sgt. Marcus Beach, is an 18-year veteran officer of the Rantoul Police Department. Sgt. Beach is a nationally recognized instructor in Use of Force and is an adjunct instruc-tor at the University of Illinois Police Training Institute. WORKSHOP II - The Unstuck Church It's too easy to get "stuck" in our ways, "stuck" in our thinking, "stuck" in our comfortableness, that we don't even recognize we're stuck. The Unstuck Church workshop will be a discus-sion to help us understand how and where our churches may be stuck in a way that is limiting growth and health. It is based on a book by the same title, authored by Tony Morgan. It won't be necessary to read the book ahead of time, but if you would like to, contact the District Office to get a copy, or order one from your favorite bookstore. Let's get unstuck! WORKSHOP III - Giving Birth to a Movement Giving Birth to a Movement: Do you desire to reach more peo-ple for Christ? Would you like to hear more about strategies in which individuals and churches are engaging to effectively do so? Attend this workshop to stir your imagination and add fuel to your passion for making disciples. Be a part of giving birth to a movement within the Illinois Great Rivers Conference. Rev. Mike Crawford is the IGRC Coordinator of Congregation-al Development. He resources the conference in starting new places for new people and for increasing the effectiveness of our existing churches. WORKSHOP IV - Budgeting and creating financial policies for your church. Does your church budget support the minis-tries and programs of your church or the other way around? Strategies for creating, implementing and monitoring an effec-tive church budget will be discussed as well as how to best use your church budget as an effective stewardship tool. Also dis-cussed will be creating internal financial control policies and procedures for your church that comply with the requirements of the Discipline. Churches of all sizes can benefit from this workshop and ample time will be set aside for discussion and sharing of information. Doug Abbott is the Director of Church Administration for Faith UMC in Champaign. A life-long Methodist, Doug also recently completed the Academy of Church Business Administrators, in conjunction with the Meth-odist General Council on Finance and Administration, in Nash-ville, TN.

All-Saints Sunday -

We will be observing All Saints Sunday on November 4 in both services. We will be remembering and celebrating those who have died this past year. As names are spoken, a bell will toll and a flower will be given to each family. Please join us for this spe-cial day of remembering and honoring.

Parable study begins November 4

“Parable—a short, simple story designed to com-municate a spiritual truth or moral lesson.” We all know of a parable—Jesus’ two most famous ones are the Good Samaritan and the parable of the Lost Son. Jesus was the master of this literary form. Beginning November 4 the Chapel Class will begin a 12-week study of Parables—The Greatest Stories Ev-er Told by John White. Join the class on Sunday morn-ings at 9:15 or study on your own—the guide introduces you to several of Jesus’ parables and their application for today. Contact Diann Peabody (815-683-1004, ([email protected]) for your copy of the book.

Decorating the Church for Christmas

During the month of September we served 126 fami-lies—a total of 380 people—276 adults and 104 children. Much appreciation goes out to all who brought in garden produce over the summer and fall—the clients were happy to have fresh items. Special items for November are cake & brownie mixes & Icing—adding some sweetness to clients’ shopping.

UMW News - On Sunday, Oct. 21, we celebrated United Methodist Women in both wor-ship services. The ladies performed two different entertaining skits. Thank you to all the ladies who helped! We talked about who United Methodist Women are and what we do. United Methodist Women support mission work not only locally, but throughout the United States and around the world. We hope you had a chance to check out the UMW table that was in the lobby. It featured lots of pictures from our Mother-Daughter Dinner and had information regarding United Methodist Women, Cunningham Chil-dren's Home, and Henderson Settlement. Thank you for celebrating United Methodist Women with us. We would like to invite every woman (you don't have to consider yourself a United Methodist Woman) to our meetings for Christian fellowship, a Bible lesson and some yummy snacks! Our next UMW Meeting is Satur-day, Nov. 17 at 1:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will also be doing a fun community service project for our shut-ins. Please join us for a great time!

Food from the Heart - Work is underway purchasing items for the 2018 Christmas Basket giveaway. Recipients are lower-income families throughout Iroquois County. Applications may be picked up at the Food Pantry or through any church, Volunteer Services or Iroquois County Public Health Department. Distribution is Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall—just present your card from Toys for Tots or your postcard as you drive through the alley by the church! Baskets will be brought to your car! Packing the baskets will take place on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall and volun-teers are most welcome! Our goal is to serve 400 families. The ABC’s of Gratitude

Thanks! “To say thanks is to celebrate a gift.” “A person never runs out of reasons to say ‘thanks.’” These quotes are from author Max Lucado in his book Before Amen. As we head into the season of Thanksgiving, try this exercise suggested by Lucado: As you list the ABC’s put beside each letter something (or some things) for which you are thankful. It might be C for church and chocolate, L for love and leaves, or X for Xerox and X-rays. Make your own list or make a list with family members—living with an attitude of gratitude enriches your life and the lives of those around you.

The family of Christina Kincade would like to thank you very much for the funeral luncheon and kind expressions of sympathy shown. Your support at this difficult time was very much appreciated and of great comfort to all of the family. Sincerely,

The Christina Kincade family
