WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, MARCH 22ND, 2020

PASTORAL

At this point in time, everyone in the World has been put on high alert regarding the COVID-19 Coronavirus. Here at home, we are seeing unprecedented measures taken to keep everyone as safe as possible. Schools are switching to online classes, pubs and restaurants are take-out only, and public Masses are suspended until further notice. It definitely feels like an unbelievably strange dream. There have been many reactions to this virus and the precautions; some extreme, some completely indifferent, and some measured and realistic. Morale is low, and people are obviously worried. So, in the midst of all of this, how are we as Catholics, people of hope and trust in Christ Jesus, supposed to respond to the “crisis” that is the Coronavirus and the “social distancing” we are now asked to practice? On March 10th the Rhode Island Catholic newspaper published a perfectly balanced and informative interview with Dr. Timothy P. Flanigan, M.D., a deacon in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence who is also a professor of medicine and a physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Below is some of that interview. Dr. Flanigan says “We can all play a key role to prevent spread of the novel coronavirus and other respiratory infections during this challenging time. We have to forgo handshakes, hugs, kisses on the cheek and other signs of affection which we love so much. Instead, we have to adapt and smile twice as wide and our affection has to be shown in the wrinkles in our eyes when we smile more. Handwashing or using hand sanitizers should become routine. Although there will be significant chaos, disruption, and suffering for those that become ill and for their family members, now is the time to put differences aside and help each other out with a smile, but not with a handshake (he smiles). He also says “We have to keep calm and carry on. We all play key roles in our families, in our communities, and in our work. When we become overwhelmed with the challenges of Covid-19 we should spend a few moments in silence and realize that Jesus is with us. He was alone while he suffered his death on the cross, except for Mary and John who were at his side. Jesus suffered so that we are never alone in our suffering. He carries our cross with us. He will never desert us. When we feel like giving up and are overwhelmed by fear, we should look to the face of Jesus and put ourselves in his hands. He will help us carry on when we feel that we cannot.” So I am going to take Dr. Flanigan’s advice to remain with Jesus, keep calm, and carry on (while continuing to wash my hands often as my mother taught me so well as a child). My added advice is simple, trust in the Lord, pray especially with your families over the phone or online, check in with your elderly neighbors and those who live alone with a simple phone call, and prepare yourselves for the exciting day that WILL COME when we can all get together again and celebrate as one big family. I pray that will be soon and I am so very much looking forward to that day. Make no mistake, God is with us and he has a plan. May we be reminded of his continued presence in our lives and may we recommit ourselves every day to him so that when we do get together again, we will be stronger in faith, more lively in hope, and more enthusiastic than ever, to share the Gospel! My love and prayers to you all, Fr. Conley

Spiritual Communion The Church encourages frequent, even daily, Holy Communion, but if at any time we can not go to Mass in or out of this season of the coronavirus, we can still unite ourselves to the Eucharist through making a spiritual Communion.

By making an Act of Spiritual Communion, we express our faith in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist and ask him to unite himself with us. Here is the Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

SACRIFICIAL GIVING

Saint Patrick Parish Sacred Heart Parish &

As we enter into uncharted territories and do not know the next time we will have public celebrations of Holy Mass, I ask you to please continue to send your weekly offertory for the support of your parishes. As everyone knows, our parishes run on the kindness of the parishioners who make up the parishes. We still must meet our financial obligations and pay our bills. Your generosity will allow that to happen! The collaborative office has a secure mailbox outside that you are welcome to drop your contributions into. You are also welcome to mail them to the office at 26R Chestnut Street Watertown, MA, or if you’re a Saint Patrick’s parishioner, you can sign up for secure automatic online giving at this link www.osvonlinegiving.com/1470. I am fully aware that many of our parishioners may be experiencing personal financial hardships at this time. I completely understand, expect, and respect the fact that you need to both practically and prayerfully consider how you will pay your own bills as well as figuring out how best to continue to support your parish Church. I humbly and gratefully thank you for your continued prayers and support. Fr. Conley

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.

Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another.

Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim Invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.

Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

Jesus Christ, heal us. Author:: Kerry Weber, an executive editor of America
