On behalf of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the local

Las Vegas Valley community, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the second WaterSmart

Innovations Conference and Exposition .

For those of you who joined us for the inaugural WaterSmart Innovations in 2008, welcome back! And, for those who are first-time

attendees, we’re grateful that you’ve taken time from your busy schedule to share your knowledge about the growing importance

of water efficiency .

No matter where you are from—Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa or Australia—you no doubt are facing

some of the most pressing water-efficiency challenges of your career, induced by the effects of climate change and ever-

increasing worldwide demand on already limited supplies .

In North America, the American Southwest—including Southern Nevada—is in the throes of a nearly decade-long drought .

Meanwhile, other parts of the country, including areas unaccustomed to prolonged water shortages, are enduring similar if not

worse drought conditions .

This is where WaterSmart Innovations enters the picture . While this one conference alone cannot provide “silver bullets” that

can resolve the myriad water shortage issues facing nations around the world, it does serve as a platform for collaboration and

sharing of ideas and experiences . From this dialogue, water agencies, elected officials and others can take steps to implement

programs that can enhance our current water efficiency practices, and mitigate some of the effects of climate change on their

ability to supply water to their constituents .

Finding and utilizing tools for the prudent and efficient use of our precious water resources is a global priority . With its comprehensive

professional sessions, expo hall and atmosphere of collaboration, WaterSmart Innovations gives you the tools you need to

achieve long-term, worldwide water sustainability to benefit generations to come .

Welcome to Las Vegas and to the second WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition, the largest event of its kind in the world .

The inaugural WSI held in October 2008 drew more than 1,500 attendees from 43 states and 17 nations . Representing a

broad spectrum of disciplines—water managers, elected officials, “green” plumbers, landscape irrigators, and so on—they

came together to share their ideas and learn from one another, with the common goal of using their newfound knowledge

at home to achieve greater levels of water efficiency .

While the water savings gleaned from WSI will be a function of how widely the ideas shared here are adopted, one thing

is certain: Attendee response to the professional sessions and the volume of traffic in the expo hall reflected the pressing

need and pent-up demand for a conference of this type . It also provided conference planners with a foundation to fine-tune

various elements of the program to make it an even more viable and valuable tool for global water professionals .

To that end, we owe a debt of gratitude to the partners and sponsors whose assistance has helped make WSI ’09

possible . You will find a list of these organizations on pages 20 and 21 . Among them are some of the most recognized

names in the realm of water efficiency; we appreciate their commitment to this cause .

For the next three days, you will have myriad opportunities to interact with water efficiency experts from around the

world . This is time well spent, as sharing creativity and knowledge in an atmosphere of collaboration is the catalyst for

finding innovative approaches to the water efficiency challenges we all face .

Thank you for joining us .

GreenPlumbers® is an innovative, national training and accreditation program that assists plumbers

in understanding their role in the environment and public health. The organization’s goal is to train

and deploy a green army of thousands of plumbers to promote the benefits of water conservation

and the reduction of GHG emissions. The focus is on changing

consumer and plumbing behavior using energy efficiency and water saving technologies. How

can we expect the homeowners and business people of America to be serious and knowledgeable

about water and energy conservation unless the plumbers that bring the water and energy to their

houses are not equally serious? The GreenPlumbers® goal is nothing less than complete culture

change for the plumbing industry.

Australian water expert Dr . Jim Gill Keynote luncheon speaker – Thursday, October 8

Climate change and its effects on water supplies have spawned a growing global crisis . In Australia,

a continent/nation whose people have faced drought for generations, the challenges are especially

pronounced . Dr . Jim Gill, inaugural chairman of Water Australia and past CEO of the Water Corporation

of Western Australia, will address these issues as the keynote luncheon speaker Thursday, October 8 .

In 2009, following 13 years as CEO of the Water Corporation of Western Australia, Dr . Gill was selected

to chair Water Australia, a joint public-private organization created to disseminate Australian technology

and expertise in water resource management .

During his tenure at the Water Corporation, Dr . Gill earned praise for developing innovative programs to reduce water demand and

diversify water resources in Western Australia, countering an enormous reduction in the yield of traditional surface water sources . His

other milestone achievements include a desalination plant that uses renewable energy, programs to enhance water supplies through

agricultural irrigation efficiency and a system for aquifer storage and recovery of treated wastewater .

Under Dr . Gill’s guidance, the agency achieved an annual system-wide water use reduction of 45 gigaliters (approximately12 billion gallons) .

In 2008, Dr . Gill received the International Water Association’s prestigious Grand Award for mastering the implications of climate change in

Australia, and this year he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia, one of the nation’s highest honors . He was named Australian Civil

Engineer of the Year for 2006 . He holds degrees from the University of Western Australia, University of Cambridge and Harvard University .

PepsiCo International Sustainability Director Dan Bena Opening session speaker – Wednesday, October 7

Dan Bena, Director of Sustainability, Health, Safety, and Environment for food and beverage giant

PepsiCo, will be the opening keynote speaker Wednesday, October 7 .

Under Mr . Bena’s guidance, PepsiCo has adopted a “Performance with Purpose” operating model

with environmental sustainability as a cornerstone . The initiative includes minimizing environmental

impacts of operations and extending across supply chains and communities . In 2007, PepsiCo

adopted rigorous enterprise-wide global metrics to track its environmental footprint, and was one

of the first companies of its size to publicly commit to quantitative resource conservation goals .

Water stewardship is a core focus of the company . In the initiative’s first year, PepsiCo’s beverage businesses reduced water consumption

by 9 percent, electricity by 8 percent and fuels by 7 percent on a per unit of production basis . The corporation’s foods businesses reduced

water consumption by 6 percent, electricity by 3 percent and fuels by 3 percent . All are on track to achieve their 2015 targets .

Earlier this year, PepsiCo became the first company in its league to formally recognize water as a human right, and commit to

preserving this right .

Mr . Bena also has served as chairman of American Beverage Association’s Water Resources Committee and chairman of the International

Society of Beverage Technologists Emerging Scientific Interests Subcommittee and Subcommittee for Sustainable Development . He

serves on the Public Health Committee of the Safe Water Network, and is a member of the Water Core Working Group of the World

Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Economic Forum’s Water Planning Board .

FLUSH20 provides a selective dual flush system for toilets . The simplistic approach of an “add-on system” offers the opportunity for users to make a significant impact on their daily water consumption with very little change in their daily habits . The low cost of the FLUSH20 compared to the dual action sanitary devices currently on the market, offers sales opportuni-ties and a marketability that is very interesting .
