DESCRIPTIONEthylene Polypropylene Diene Monomer, more commonly referredto as EPDM, is a synthetic rubber that is used in a wide variety ofapplications ranging from roofing to automobile tires. Calendaredinto a sheet form, it possesses many exceptional characteristics thatmakes it an ideal membrane for waterproofing applications.

Lexcan EPDM membrane is available in two different types and avariety of thicknesses:

Standard EPDM: Lexcan Standard EPDM is an un-reinforcedsynthetic rubber sheet, available in 1.1 mm (45 mil), 1.5 mm (60mil) and 2.3 mm (90 mil) thicknesses. The 1.5 mm thickness isthe most commonly used product for waterproofing applications.

Reinforced EPDM: This product consists of an EPDMmembrane internally reinforced with a polyester scrim. The scrimimparts superior tear and puncture resistance where physicalabuse or vandalism might be a concern. Lexcan ReinforcedEPDM membrane is available in 1.1 mm (45 mil) and 1.5 mm (60mil) thicknesses.

All Lexcan EPDM membrane systems come with relatedaccessory products to complete proper seaming, details andflashing. The result is a versatile and proven waterproofingsystem able to ensure long-term performance in the mostdemanding environments.

USESLexcan EPDM is widely used in all of the following water-proofing applications:• Below Grade Waterproofing • Basements• Parking Garages • Bridges• Plaza Decks • Ponds & Fountains• Water storage Tanks

Lexcan EPDM membranes are also widely used in roofing andcivil engineering. For more information on these applications, talkto your Lexcan representative or visit lexcan.com.

FEATURES & BENEFITSExceptional Crack Bridging Ability - Substrates often spall, crack or split due to settling or thermal expansion and contrac-

tion. Most waterproofing membranes will fail when the under-lying substrate cracks. In contrast, with its exceptional elastici-ty and flexibility, Lexcan's EPDM rubber membrane can oftenaccommodate a substrate failure while remaining watertight!

Consistent Membrane Thickness - Liquid applied mem-branes may vary in thickness depending on local high andlow spots in the substrate. Factory manufactured EPDMmembrane on the other hand ensures a consistent mem-brane thickness throughout the application.

Highly Flexible - Fully flexible down to -60°C, LexcanEPDM far exceeds the cold temperature flexibility of otherwaterproofing membranes!

Proven Longevity - Lexcan EPDM has been in use over 40years around the world, in climates ranging from the highartic to the deserts of Algeria. Our earliest projects are stillperforming superbly!

Large Sheet Sizes - Lexcan EPDM membranes are avail-able in a wide variety of sheet sizes,* from 1.52 m x 15.24 m(5' x 50') all the way up to 15.24 m x 60.96 m (50' x 200')!Large areas can be quickly and efficiently waterproofed in afraction of the time of other systems!

Suitable for Direct Exposure - Unlike most traditionalwaterproofing membranes, Lexcan EPDM is completelyresistant to sunlight and UV radiation. There is no need toprotect the waterproofing membrane from sunlight either dur-ing construction or after!

Cold Application - Lexcan's W-A Design is entirely coldapplied. There are no fire or liability concerns as with torch-applied systems.*: Available sheet sizes vary depending on type and thickness of

membrane.

CAUTIONS & LIMITATIONS• Lexcan EPDM membranes can be slippery when wet.

• Bituminous or hydrocarbon based materials should not come

into direct contact with Lexcan EPDM membrane. Coverboardsor protection boards may be used as a separation layer in mostcases. Consult Lexcan for approved separation boards.

• Bituminous based waterproofing membranes can be splicedto Lexcan EPDM membranes. Consult Lexcan for approveddetails.

• Concrete, masonry and other curing substrates must be fullycured (usually a minimum of 28 days) before attempting toadhere membrane to these substrates. Attempting to bond towet or moist substrates may lead to failure of the adhesive bond.

• For compatibility of its EPDM membranes with other chemi-cals and pollutants, consult Lexcan.

• For vertical wall waterproofing, roll sizes should be limited towhat can easily be handled on the jobsite.

• Adequate ventilation should be provided when working inenclosed spaces with adhesives and sealants.

WATERPROOFING SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONSDESIGN W-A: ADHESIVE ADHERED EPDM WATERPROOFINGIn this application, a Standard or Reinforced EPDM membrane is fullyadhered to the substrate using a Bonding Adhesive. The substratemay be concrete, masonry, wood, most metals and some types ofinsulation. Substrates must be dry, structurally sound and free ofmoisture, chemical release agents, greases, dirt, debris and dust.

Lexcan has two different bonding adhesives to choose from:Lexcan BA-90 Bonding Adhesive is a solvent based contact typeadhesive meant to be applied to both the substrate and theunderside of the EPDM membrane. Once the adhesive has dried

until it does not string when touched by a dry finger, themembrane is carefully rolled onto the substrate. BA-90 provides a strong, immediate tack and is ideal for workingon sloped or vertical surfaces or in windy conditions. It offers awider application temperature range in comparison to BA-160.

Lexcan BA-160 Bonding Adhesive is a water-based product that isnormally applied in a one-coat application to the substrate. Themembrane is then laid into the wet adhesive. BA-160 does notoffer much initial tack so the membrane can be shifted around afterapplication. For high slope or vertical applications, BA-160 can beapplied similar to BA-90 in a two-coat application to provide abetter initial tack. BA-160 normally cures to full strength within 24to 48 hours, depending on ambient temperature and humidity.Caution must be exercised to avoid applying, shipping or storingwater-based adhesives in cold temperatures. BA-160 is moreenvironmentally friendly then BA-90, however.

For complete technical specifications on Lexcan's BondingAdhesive, refer to their Product Data bulletins. For further information, consult Lexcan's “W-A Adhesive AdheredEPDM Waterproofing Sample Specification” and Waterproofingdetails.

APPROVALSLexcan EPDM membranes meet and exceed the requirements ofCGSB 37-GP-52M. They are approved by C.C.M.C. and listed under10976L.
