watering Krispy Kreme “original glazed”

doughnuts.

Each box of one-dozen doughnuts sells for $6.

Orders will be taken until Friday, February 26th.

Delivery of the doughnuts will be in the afternoon -approximately 3p.m.

Tutor’s Corner

Your Professors Are a Valuable Resource

Know their office hours-they are usually listed in your Course Outline or Syllabus

Be brave! Knock on the door-don’t worry about appearing “stupid.” If you have a question or if you need clarification, ask.

Come with specific questions or goals.

Come prepared with necessary materials.

Remember that professors enjoy discussing the content of their courses.

If you’re not available during a professor’s designated office hours, call or send an e-mail with your

question or questions. All DCC professors have e-mail addresses and many have voice mail; this infor-

mation is usually found on your Course Outline or Syllabus. Whether you visit during office hours,

phone or email, your professors will notice your initiative and your interest in the course.

Nursing 2016 Application Deadline Announcement

Applications are now availa-ble for the LPN and RN Pro-grams. Applications are available at www.dcc.vccs.edu with a link under College Events/Calendar (click on Full Calen-dar and then Application Packet for LPN & RN Program). Please read the Application Process carefully.

Pre-requisites for both

programs can be found in the

college catalog. Pre-requisites must be com-

pleted by the end of Summer 2016 for ap-

plicants to be considered. The TEAS V test is

part of the application process and test re-

sults from the TEAS nurse entrance test must

be submitted to DCC by ATI by the applica-

tion deadline.

Deadline for submission is February 26,

Smarthinking

Smarthinking is an online tutoring service that Danville Community College offers for free to its students. Smarthinking provides tutoring in a variety of subjects, many of which are available

24/7.

Students can only access Smarthinking using Blackboard. Even if you are not using Blackboard for your courses, you will now have access to this free tutoring service through a Smarthinking

link in your “My Blackboard Courses” section of Blackboard.

Please take advantage of the free resource provided to you by Danville Community College.

Did you receive a letter of invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for Two Year Colleges?

Membership is done through Headquarters. . You should have received a letter from us with a PASSCODE to join. We also have a chapter form for you to complete! Under mitigating circumstances we may be able to take the appli-

cation locally.

Basic eligibility requirements include (1) having a 3.2 overall grade point average (GPA); (2) having com-pleted at least 12 semester hours in a degree-granting program or classes which could be used in a de-gree program; and (3) being currently enrolled for at least three (3) hours at DCC. If you are not certain,

contact Ms. Taylor!

NOTE: If you are already a member and receive a letter, please notify an advisor. It means we need to get the milestone placed on your records. Never fear, you are already a member and DO NOT have to pay

again. Remember, “Once a Kappan, always a Kappan!”

The informational meetings were well-attended. We hope you will continue to attend the meetings. We meet this Thursday, January 28 in Oliver Hall, 110 Temple to discuss the DCC website. Our next regular meeting is

February 4 at 11:00 a.m. in Taylor 201.

Prospective members unable to attend either meeting should contact one of the faculty advisors as soon as possi-ble – Sherry Gott (797-8466 or [email protected], Temple 113, Chris Pantazis (797-8411 or [email protected], Temple 111), or Vickie Taylor (797-8452 or [email protected], Taylor 121E). Membership packets and a calendar

of events for this semester are available on Ms. Gott’s and Ms. Taylor’s office doors.

DEADLINES: Membership MUST be completed and fees paid online by Monday, February 22-NO EXCEPTIONS, if you wish to participate in the formal induction ceremony! If you have questions, contact an advisor. Membership remains open

the entire semester. The one-time fee for joining our chapter is $90.

GET INVOLVED: Hallmark chairs need committee members to help this year run smoothly. If you like to do scrapbooks or to do bulletin boards, we have a place for you! Get involved – you’ll like it! RESCHEDULED CHILI/BAKE SALE, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3… We are planning a chili/bake sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Temple Building 1st floor hallway and we need all members and prospective members to be involved. It is a great way to meet everyone and become part of the chapter. Let Ms. Gott know what homemade baked goodie you

can bring and when you can work.

COMPETITIVE EDGE and COLLEGE FISH… Members are encouraged to do both of these. College FISH is open to all

DCC students.

VIRGINIA/WEST VIRGINIA REGIONAL CONVENTION… The Regional Convention is being held at Northern Virginia Community College/Annandale Campus in Annandale, VA, March 4-6, 2016. The Regional Convention celebrates the accomplishments of last year’s chapters, provides educational and fellowship opportunities, and elects new regional of-ficers while recognizing the hard work of outgoing officers. It’s also a great way to be active at the regional level and get your chapter excited about the new year. Registration fee for our convention is $55. You need to let Ms. Gott or Ms. Taylor know by February 5 if you plan to attend in order to reserve enough rooms. The hotel is the Hampton Inn & Suites Battlefield Blvd, 1421 North Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake, VA 23320, $89 (1-4 people per room) + tax of 14% + $1.00 per room, per night. A registration deposit of $30 will be due by February 12.

HONORS IN ACTION PROJECT… On December 4, Emerald Tran, Sue Richard, Kacey Wageman, Mr. Panta-zis, Ms. Gott, and Ms. Taylor put the finishing touches on the Honors in Action project to be submitted in January

as part of our Hallmark entries. Other members worked during the break to complete other entries.

COMPETITIVE EDGE PROGRAM AVAILABLE … Current members are encouraged to look at this newly re-vised program offered free by Phi Theta Kappa. It teaches Soft Skills which is what employers are mentioning as a necessary skill in those being hired. How great would this look on your résumé if you complete all five

stars!

MEETINGS: Our regular meetings are scheduled for the first and third Thursdays each month at 11:00 a.m. in

Taylor 201. Current and prospective/new members should plan now to attend. EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID

Celebrate National Wear Red Day® Join Phi Theta Kappans on Friday, February 5 in wearing

RED. This is the day when Americans nationwide wear red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness.

“SUSTAINABILITY” IS THE WORD - RECYCLING SERVICE PROJECT CONTINUES… In conjunction with a past Interna-tional Service Project, Operation Green: Improving Our Communities, we will continue gathering aluminum cans from the Taylor, Temple, Wyatt, E&IT Buildings, Foundation Hall and the Student Center in the recycling bins. Anyone interested in helping with this project should see an advisor. Habitat for Humanity will receive the cans for their projects. Tabs from the cans may be taken to the office of Ms. Gott or Ms. Taylor or put in the plastic bag in the Taylor Building vending

machine room.

FUNDRAISER FOR THE DANVILLE CANCER ASSOCIATION… Beginning now, Phi Theta Kappa will continue “FLOCKING” deserving people in Danville with flamingos. We will flock yards, businesses and, yes, offices on campus for a donation of at least $25 for 20 plastic flamingos for two days and $15 for 25 pink paper flamingos. All money benefits the Danville Cancer Association which is used locally. This has been a very success-

ful project for the past several years. Help us continue the tradition!

The Math Lab is a computer lab staffed with math instructors and

math tutors that can help with Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

The Math Lab is located in the Temple Building Room 122.

WHO CAN USE THE MATH LAB?

The Math Lab can be used by any student enrolled in a developmen-

tal math course at DCC.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Use of the Math Lab is FREE to students.

Purpose of the Math Lab

To offer students a place to work on math outside of class.

To provide students access to free math tutoring.

To serve as a testing center for developmental math classes. To

enhance students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and

sharpen students’ problem solving skills.

To promote student success.

Math Lab Policies

Students are expected to keep noise to a minimum

within the math lab in respect for others working and/

or testing.

Students are expected to work on developmental math

or other school related assignments while in the math

lab. Preference will always be given to students work-

ing on developmental math.

Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek

help while in the math lab.

Free printing is allowed for school related materials

only.

Active listening is an art and few practice it well. Active listening means paying attention, asking questions and reflecting

upon what you have heard.

Active listening leads to:

Fewer disagreements Greater productivity Better interpersonal relationships

Why aren't we better listeners?

We don't engage We don't care We can't stop talking

If someone is speaking to you it is important to them and therefore, perhaps of importance to you. A good listener will

listen not only to what is being said, but what is not said. Active listening involves observing body language and noticing

inconsistencies between verbal and non-verbal messages.

Interrupting Stopping the speaker's story Solving a problem Impatient for them to finish Being defensive

Be honest with yourself and think of your own listening behavior.

Ask two colleagues, friends or employees how they perceive your active listening skills.

Here are some pointers to becoming a better active listener:

Stop Talking - Don't talk, listen. When somebody else is talking listen to what they are saying. Do not interrupt, talk over

them or finish their sentence.

Prepare Yourself to Listen - Relax. Focus on the speaker.

Remove Distractions - Focus on what is being said. Don't doodle, shuffle papers, look out the window, pick your

fingernails, etc.

Try to understand the other person's point of view - Look at issues from their perspective. Let go of preconceived

Ideas.

Be Patient - A pause, even a long pause, does not necessarily mean that the speaker has finished. Be patient and let the

speaker continue in his own time.
